View Full Version : Mapopolis and TH55

Has anyone successfully used Mapopolis with the TH55? I installed Navigator 1.22, and when it opens the Navigator control buttons are at the middle of the screen (like it's formatting the screen for a 320 x 320 device), with the map above them. The bottom portion of the screen is just white.
I can't raise the graffiti area, since the up arrow is greyed out.
I havn't used Mapopolis with a 480 x 320 device before, but I'm pretty sure that it supports that resolution.
Anyone else tried this yet?

Well, when I first got my TH55, I had installed Mapopolis and the same thing happened to me. I e-mail mapopolis and they wrote back that they need more people interested in mapopolis for them to justify buying one and tweaking the program to support our resolution.
So, they've already started an e-mail list, so e-mail them away and request an upgrade in software so this program can come forth!

Well, I'll email Mapopolis to let them know I'm interested...I hope that other TH55 users do the same!

I'm not a Mapopolis user but this brings up a good point that the display renders differently than the other hi-res+ devices. Maybe we need to do a software audit to see what works and what doesn't. I have another thread where my WordSmith and iSilo don't display in hi-res+ on the TH.

Mapopolis Navigator 1.xx does not currently support HiRes+ on Clies UXs or TH55s, nor on the Tungsten T3. They have promised T3 and UX support for months, but it still hasn't materialized. Navigator 1.xx is designed for ARM and OS5, and even though the Mapopolis website doesn't state this, their support people have confirmed that Navigator 1.xx requires a minimum processor speed of 200mhz to run correctly. It runs fine on NX/NZ models, but not very well on UXs and apparently now THs.
If you want to run Mapopolis on a TH55, I suggest you use their version that was designed for Palm OS3 and OS4. The current version is Mapopolis 5.19. The maps are cheaper for this version anyway.
I tried running Navigator 1.xx on my T2 but it didn't work well at all, but Mapopolis 5.19 works great. It's not as fancy, but it works.

On a TH55? I know it works on NX/NZs, so I assumed it would work on TH55s too. Just to clarify, I'm taliking about Mapopolis 5.xx (the older application). Mapopolis Navigator 1.xx is the newest application but it doesn't do HiRes+ yet, except in beta, and then it doesn't do it that well, or so I hear.

Mapopolis 5.xx is designed for pre-Palm OS5 handhelds and so will run on handhelds with slower processors and less memory. It provides realtime GPS tracking and routing, but does not have voice or visual prompting or automatic rerouting (in case you get off the route).
Navigator 1.xx is optimized for OS5 and the ARM processors. It adds the capability of automatic rerouting and provides onscreen (visual) and voice prompts when navigating a route. That is, it will tell you when and where to turn to arrive at your destination. With the added capabilities comes the need for a faster processor and more memory. This application runs best on the Clie NX/NZ or the Tungsten T3. (My T2 really doesn't have enough speed to run it well with it's 144mhz processor.)
The best GPS experience is on the PocketPC. I have Navigator 4.xx on my iPAQ h2215 and it is many times better than the Palm Navigator version. This is because PocketPC 2003 is much more robust than the Palm OS5. The PocketPC version of Navigator not only runs faster on PocketPCs, but it has many more features that Palm OS5 cannot support.

Just for clarification, I had the Nav 1.22 trial installed on my UX and it worked fine in landscape w/o codediver. The menu is only 320x320, but the maps display 480. I could care less about the menus.

Without GPS, can I just use Navigator like a plain map? you know, like Mapquest with routing capabilities but without any prompting or localization.

Yes. It functions well with or without a GPS unit. I don't have one and Mapopolis came through big time when I was traveling.

Mapopolis has one of the most difficult to navigate websites I've ever seen. And this from a GPS map navigation company! :D
To download the maps for the older Mapopolis 5.xx application, follow these instructions:
[list=1]
Go to the Mapopolis Home page (www.mapopolis.com (http://www.mapopolis.com)).
On the center bottom of the Home page, click where it says Mapopolis Platinum. (There is an image of a T2.)
On the page that displays, you have three choices for maps, as follows:
--Palm OS 5 PDA: These are the Navigator maps. Navigator 1.xx is the newer application and it only works on Palm OS5 and PocketPC.
--Palm OS 3 or 4 PDA: These are the maps that work on the older Mapopolis application. This older application will run on Palm OS 3, 4, or 5. It is simply called Mapopolis 5.xx. The maps have various names, but Platinum + GPS are the best for this application.
--PocketPC PDA: These are the maps for Navigator 4.xx that only runs on PocketPCs.
Select the Palm OS 3 or 4 PDA link.
Select the map pack you want to order/download: You can choose from Platinum + GPS, Platinum (no GPS capability), Enhanced (no GPS capability), or Place Guide (no maps just points of interest to enhace your maps.
Follow the onscreen prompts...

I received this note in an email from Lamar at Mapopolis:
"What you can do is get folks with this machine who want to run
Mapopolis natively on it to contact me and let me add them to
the request list. This is how a relatively low volume machine
like the UX-50 got on the list, and it's now supported."
So, if there are TH55 users out there who want to use the Mapop. Navigator, please send that request to support@mapopolis.com.

I've tried to run Navigator on TH55 other than screen size problem, it works very well.
GPS was up and running in less than 1 min. voice prompt was loud and clear (wish was a female voice instead). Directions was generated very quickly (compared to my old T665). I love the auto re-route feature as well.
Come on people, let email mapopolis and get them to update Mapopolis.

Good luck with that! Mapopolis has been promising the T3 users HiRes+ support since October, and they still haven't provided it.
BTW: Have you put the navigation features to the test yet? That is, got out on the highway to see how well Mapopolis Navigator does while routing? I know several UX users have complained about lag time of up to half a mile. Mapopolis recommends a minimum 200mhz processor, and the UX/TH have a 140mhz processor. I know my T2 with 144mhz processor had trouble keeping a GPS lock due to lack of processor speed--that is, the GPS stayed locked but Mapopolis Navigator couldn't function fast enough to keep the connection going between the T2 and the GPS. If you have problems with this and you are using a serial GPS mouse, you might try using a Bluetooth GPS instead. The BT GPS units tend to stay connected to slower Palms better than their serial mouse counterparts.

Find me a bunch of people who'll write to support@mapopolis.com and
request TH55 support in the program (100 is a good number) and I can
justify asking the boss to buy one. We're not a big company, and contrary to
popular opinion at the website, we're not getting rich at this. Buying
another handheld is something we have to consider, and then there's the
programmer's time going into it...
Find me a bunch of folks that I can put on the list, and it'll
eventually happen... if only a few ask, we'll probably not put a priority on
it.

HOLY CRAP!! Mapopolis is awesome!!! I haven't used it in a few years since I had my last PDA...but just downloaded Navigator 1.30 and - dragonknight is right - works flawlessley....will be even better when full screen is supported....I had no idea it gave turn by turn directions, looks up phone numbers and addresses of thousands of business/school/local government listing, etc etc..... AND - I found a cable-based GPS system that was made for Clie 'T' systems....I have an email in to the company now to see if it will work with the TH55 - or when they plan to make one....that way, bluetooth MD isn't needed :D

L0KEMAN, when you hear the voice prompt, does it proanunce the street name for you? If it is then, you are probably using the pspeak option (text to voice) for your voice prompt. Voice prompt is kinda grainy with that option. Try to delete psspeak.prc and pspeak.db and install MapopolisWords.pdb instead. It is much clearer and makes the whole program runs faster.

dragonknight,
Thankyou very much, I know for a fact that I have all of them installed. I am downloading mapopolis right now and will try it immediatly. I hope it works. I just lost everything today when I got a very bad virus and had to do a hard reset on my computer. I then had some issues with my NZ-90 (I forgot to mention that earlier) recieving photos from my Ericsson T616. It was telling me that .jpg was an unknown format and would not except the photo transfer. After hours I figured it out.... just had to upgrade clie viewer. I got rid of a lot of extra stuff to load some very large maps for mapopolis. To make a long story short, I could have sworn I backed up my stuff on some flash cards, but lost everything. I have to rebuy aol and my cf driver (don't remember where I bought them), I searched every site I could think of. But I will try ASAP and let you know.
l0keman
03-08-2004, 12:06 AM
nope. didn't help. I guess I'll download the regular instead of the beta. I tried it with map.. words only and every time I tried to install pspeak the data base would install under the name of map.. words and give me the error.
dragonknight
03-08-2004, 12:54 AM
If I understand correctly, you are installing mapapoliswords.pdb and pspeak? You can not have both mapaoplisword.pdb and pspeak installed together. Other than maps, I have two files installed Mapopolis.prc and MapopolisWords.pdb, that's it. Hope it helps.
Also I noticed you are using NZ-90 that might have something to do with it. I think NZ-90 still uses sony's own sound api instead of Palm OS5 standard sound api....

The voice prompts will be horrible on any Clie using the Sony sound APIs rather than the Palm OS5 sound APIs . I tried using it on a NX60 and the voice prompts were so bad that I had to turn the NX60's sound off!
Another Sony quirk is that they create their own APIs for extending the screens to HiRes+. Apparently, each Clie series has different APIs so that what might work on the NX/NZ won't work on the UX or the TH. I don't blame Mapopolis for not wanting to have to modify their program for every new Clie that comes out! Hopefully OS6 will be robust enough to keep Sony from modifying the PalmSource code for their Clies!
BTW: I wish you folks running the Palm version of Mapopolis Navigator could experience the PocketPC version. It is far advanced from the Palm version due to limitations within the PalmOS.

They must have an old PPC. My iPAQ h2215 (running PocketPC 2003 with 400mhz cpu) way out performs the T3 I use to have, as far as Mapopolis goes. I get a GPS fix almost instantaneously. Re-routing is almost that quick. Even when using maps from the CF card (rather than RAM) and having several thousand square miles of maps selected it is fast! BTW: The PocketPC versions is much better at using maps on a SD/CF card.

Does anyone have any updates on the status of Mapopolis support of the TH55? Mine seems to lag a bit, is it just cause of the slower processor?

Greetings!
I am using Mapopolis 5.15 - and it works flawlessly on the TH-55 in full screen Hires+ (320X480) mode. I am updating to 5.19 next week, when I have the time, I'll post when I do and report if it works the same.
Regarding 1.xx support for the TH-55, here is a thought. It sounds like Mapopolis is balking a bit because of the cost of purchasing a new TH-55 to do the development work on. Maybe a few brave people here could offer to beta test what they write on you own TH-55 in order to keep Mapopolis from having to purchase a unit? It might get the code development done faster. Just a thought....
Best wishes,
Bawko

Atomic Chicken,
That might work. I'm also wondering if Sony has released a TH55 PalmOS simulator. I use simulators designed to simulate T3, Clie UX, and Treo 600. I know the simulators are limited, but they are better than nothing. You might ask Lamar at the GPSPassion Mapopolis forum (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/default.asp?CAT_ID=5).
On the other hand, we asked them to support the fullscreen on T3s back in September and they just recently (last month) did so.
I think the NX/NZ owners are the only ones to have true fullscreen support on the PalmOS side.

Mapopolis 5.xx is for PalmOS3 and PalmOS4 devices. It is very simplistic due to the lack of OS capability.
Mapopolis Navigator 1.xx is for newer and it is for PalmOS5 devices. It has more functionality due to OS5 being more robust than OS3 and OS4.

These maps are huge, does anyone who uses this program have a solution for this memory hog. Or an application that can free up memory for more maps?

Put the maps on your memory stick.
cosFFM
04-01-2004, 08:44 AM
Yes, install the maps on your memorystick. Either move them from internal memory to the stick with Clie Files or directly install them on the stick, you can choose the location (internal/stick) within the Hotsync install tool.
You just have to remember that you need to have enough RAM left to open the maps, maybe twice the size of the largest map. And also be careful that you uncheck 'load continous maps' in Mapopolis.
Surfdog
04-01-2004, 09:52 AM
Ok but in the mapopolis faq it says you can't load maps to the memory stick.
Also isn't putting the maps into 'load continous maps' option what youre supposed to do when using gps?
cosFFM
04-01-2004, 10:19 AM
This I don't understand. I always run my maps from the stick as it is a built-in feature of Mapopolis. It copies them to RAM, when you select them in the 'Open Maps' dialog. And when you quit Mapopolis, it asks you if would like to keep the maps in RAM or delete them again.
Maybe the FAQ refers to a special cirumstances?
'Load continous maps' is a nice feature as long as you have enough RAM for them :) If you have 50 MB worth of continous maps in a folder on your stick and you open one of them with the option checked, I think Mapopolis will try to open all of them. Maybe they have fixed that by now, but it has happened to me once and the Clie crashed hard.

I am using the latest beta for OS5. It only runs in 320x320 and that not yet properly, because the screen is cut off a little on the right hand side. But it supports a cool 3D view now.
I thought you were running it on the TJ37.

I contacted Mapopolis about TH55 support and was number 48 to inquire about it. Keep those cards and letters coming... :p
BTW, no matter what I do I can't get any maps to show up on the memory stick--I need to copy them to internal memory before Mapopolis will see them.

I was number 49...
So, when they have something to test, we should find out.

I beleive they are planning to support the TH55 (if they can fix what sony changed on this model to break)with their software.
I got this on 4/27 so it could be a month or a couple of months, sounds promising though :<)
Hi,
We're looking for a few TH55 users who will be
willing to install several test versions of
the program and report back what numbers read
out on the various screens.
If you want to participate, there'll be a free
Navigator Map Pack in it for you.
Are you interested? :-)

Anyone have any more word on possible TH55 support? I wonder if Sony's decision to stop making more Clies will factor into Mapopolis' decision...
Just got a message from Lamar @ mapopolis saying that the latest beta (1.39) has TH55 support. I'm going to try it later today...

I tried the new beta 1.39 which supports full screen 480x320 now. All buttons for navigation are seen. 3D navigation looks much better. It seems that there is still 10mm room above the 3D map. Voice sounds much better on the TH55 then on the NZ90.
I was a little bit concerned that they would stop support because of Sony’s decision stopping producing Clie’s for US and Europe.
With the 32Mb of memory there is enough room for Maps together with Bluetooth (European model) it’s a good combination. It’s a little bit slower than my previous NZ90 but longer battery power and nicer shape instead.
Thanks to Mapopolis for there support .

I've been using Navigator 1.3 for a couple of weeks now and, with the exception of the TH55 support issue, it works great (I have just downloaded the latest beta and will give that a whirl). I use a Dconnex BT GPS which works just fine -it has lost the connection now and then but so did my old Holux GPS mouse.
As for maps, I use MSMount and keep my most used maps in a MSMount folder on my memory card. With a 256mb card I am able to store all my country maps and the UK major roads map on one card, with a copy of the central Scotland maps in the MSMount folder. With MSMount enabled the system thinks that the maps in the relevant folder are already in RAM, so the usual system of maps being copied temporarily to RAM is avoided - leaves me with 20mb of RAM still to find software to fill!!

Hey, that beta is awesome!! Just a quick question - what is the little red triangle that is always in the bottom right hand corner of the screen?

Hallo weelogic
the red triangle shows the direktion to the north. With the 4th Button from the left side you can rotate the map and you alway know the direction to the north.

Just loaded the beta up. Nice! They added a directory thingy when you tap on the line to enter where maps are on the card that shows all the different trees. Handy! I always forgot if I did "palm/map" or "palm/programs/map".
The UK TH55 makes a nice little geocaching pda now...

The newest beta, 2.05 is doing some very complex map loading. It's designed for people who want to keep a lot of maps, arranged in folders (by state, etc.) and be able to route across numerous maps. For details on what is going on behind the scenes with this beta, go here:

And look for the Mapopolis forum, "News" folder. ;)

I guess they still haven't updated that link. It's not anything you're doing wrong. It didn't work full screen for me and I let them know about it on their forum. I am running a version 1.39 that does work full screen on the TH55!
