I need advice on what to do. My husband bought me the NX80. (I told him about the great deal at CompUSA, and he came home with it for me today!!!)

Here is my situation:

I'm going from NX70 --->NX80
My husband is going from Palm IIIc --->NX70
We hotsync on different computers

I think for my transfer, I'm going to copy my Sony folder and rename it on my computer and uninstall the Palm Desktop. Then I will install the Palm Desktop from the NX80 CD. I will manually install programs I want on my new Clie. That seems to be about the cleaness, most straight-forward way to approach it.

His transfer is trickier. I think I will do basically the same thing...copy his Palm folder and rename it. Uninstall the Palm Desktop. Reinstall the Desktop that came with the NX70. Manually install programs he wants to keep. But, here is the tricky part. I don't think I want to do a hard re-set on the NX70 before he gets it. I have it customized with the "Toon" VG skin and status bar and a few other things that I'm sure he wants to keep. (He likes my Toon :) ) Problem is I set it up so long ago, that I don't remember what all I did. So, if I can get by without a hard re-set, it would be sooooo much better. And I can delete the apps he wouldn't use.

Does it make sense? Anyone have any other ideas?

I'm so excited!!!! Can't wait for it to charge.:D

For yours you don't have to do all that :) Just move the backup folder out of there and hotsync.

Won't that put patches that I uploaded for the NX70 on the NX80?

As long as you remove the backup directory your ok. All that will remain is the PIM.

:D I thought that is what it meant. My mind if fried. I've been reading a zillion posts about the NX80. MP3's...CF drivers...bluetooth...graffiti1...graffiti2...MS...Piscel viewer...Camera...............

I was asking the same thing yesterday when I upgraded from an NX70 to NX80. I did a backup with the MSbackup program on the NX70. Then I deleted all the patches from the NX70. I then did a hotsync with the computer using the NX70. Then I did a restore on the NX70 to get the patches back on using the MSbackup program again. ......Then I just hotsynced the new NX80 with the computer and entered the same name. Worked perfectly. I was also concerned since I used Peleca's CF versions for audio and video but both are working flawlessly on my NX80.

Fortunately tho, many app-builders have updated their versions over the years; esp. to include colors for newer palms.

So if he searches for some of his familiar apps he may find current ones.

The biggest problem that I faced with old apps migrating to my NX80 was that some of them weren't "wired" for the extra hardware on the Clie; e.g. jog dial, back button... and my apps would only unfreeze after a soft reset, and in some cases a hard reset.

My final advice is, before he invests his time importing his data he should find out which apps won't work on the 70 and look for updates.

Well, we are getting updates, and generally updating his system. He is not a 'power' user (like me :D) but, he mostly wants it for simple pda functions and the mp3 player.
