How du you engage the graffiti shortcuts?

Uhm, is this a trick question?
You scribble the alias symbol (sort of like a lower case l with a loop) followed by the letters triggering the shortcut.

Here is the deal:

I have assigned shortcut 1 my username and shorcut 2 my passw for wlan.

How do I make these shortcuts to appear? Must I use som funny graffiti suymbol or can I do this via the keyboard? I want ot minimize the ammount of keypad / pen writing.
