View Full Version : AliasExt trick for freeing RAM

I know this may have been discussed in the myriad of threads on here, but a detailed search did not answer to my satisfaction whether the following programs will work and or Hotsync from the memory card:
Snappermail
Verichat
PocketTunes
HandBase
SS_P2P and Smartchart, DGraphConverter files for DOCS2GO

this isn't answering your question directly but what i have done in the past is back up my UX and give it ago. If it doesn't work or you stuff up other programs, simply restore from backup. I found that if you try new things you lean so much more.

snappermail - it should, but you won"t be able to auto-get mail.. I don't think there's a hotsync conduit yet, is there?
verichat - no
PocketTunes - dunno
Handbase - yes, works fine for me with hotsync.
Docs2go - saw a thread on here about it. apparently, if you move to MS, you also have to delete or move the Palm files on your PC's Docs2go directory, or else it installs back to RAM. Try a search specifically for this topic. It's here somwhere.

The DocsToGo files have to be in RAM at sync time for synchronization to work correctly. That's why the conduit installs the files to RAM if needed.
Exception: The following three files can reside on an external card, and will not be copied to RAM if that card is present during hotsync: WordToGo (WordView+), SheetToGo and SlideshowToGo.
Any amount of experimentation with DTG on card, AliasExt or combinations thereof has failed -- either synchronization doesn't work correctly (like edits not getting merged), or the apps crash after exiting, or extended functionality is missing (like calling SmartChart or running a spell checker).
If anyone here can get DTG to work 100% (not 90%) when installed in AliasExt or on a card, please be very specific and let us know exactly how this was accomplished.

For docs to go you can move the word to go and sheet to go programs to card but leave the documents program file on the clie. i did this and it syncs fine.

Big_raji, do you have Snappermail in an AliasExt folder? is it a sepaprate subfolder? I am not interested in autochecking mail, I do manually check, I am close to a desktop pretty much 8hrs a day

I only tried out Snappermail for the 30 day evaluation. I had it in it's own subfolder in AliasExt.
/IntMedia/Palm/Program/AliasExt/Snappermail
From what I remember, I moved the main program file and all the other files as well. Didn't have any problems, except the auto-get of course.

blackdoc, I keep all the apps I moved to Alias Ext into new subfolders which I named after the app. This makes for easy housekeeping if you ever want to delete apps. I have Snappermail in Internal Media/System/Palm/Alias Ext/Snappermail
As far as DTG is concerned, I agree with Dannn except that I also move WordtoGoFonts.pdb to Alias Ext too (into a DTG folder of course). This saved me an additional 266k of space in Ram

i'm wondering if there is a list of apps that works on the aliasext and which ones don't. i know from personal experience that Agendus doesn't work well at aliasext..

Can you stream music from the internet ok from PocketTunes from AliasExt?
We can try to compile a list here, maybe it will make it to the FAQ

quite all apps are ok in alisaext ; even ss 929 and ws p2p are ok ; but don't forget the pap will be copied when launched/used and that will make you wait each time ;
Aliasext is especially great for small apps as u neraly don't notice any difference ; for apps used daily like agendus, or snappermail, i'd rather have them always in ram ;
I have ptunes on vms, no problem, as i said before, excpet a few one and system related ones all my apps are "aliasexted"
hm I have snappermail in its own folder in folder in alias ext
it works just fine (I have the premier edition => SSL is a must for me) but its funny that the snappermail icon always disappears in the launcher. but I access it with ctrl+1 :-)

That won't work, or rather, it works by not providing you with the extra fonts at all -- you just get the default fonts. This is due to how AliasExt works. The app, along with all databases with the same creator ID are copied to handheld memory when run. If a file resides in the same folder within AliasExt but has a different CreatorID, it will NOT be copied to RAM, and the app will NOT find it.
In the case of the DocumentsToGo apps, DataViz in their infinite wisdom decided to use different creator IDs for all the apps and subapps. The WordView+ app has a creatorID of DTGR, while the WortGoGoFonts database has a creatorID of DTGF.
Summary: What you did has the same effect as deleting WordToGoFonts from the handheld. WordView+ works fine without it, but you won't get the extra fonts.

And you're 100% sure that there's no copy of WordToGoFonts in main memory? Double-check, please, as the DTG files get automatically reinstalled if missing.
I'm nagging about this not to be difficult, but because it defies the way that AliasExt works, by only copying files with the same CreatorID to RAM. It also doesn't work for me -- I can only get apps and files with the same CreatorID working through AliasExt.
A way to see how this works is to copy McFile to an AliasExt directory, along with a totally unrelated file. When starting McFile, you will see the McFile app in main memory, but not the unrelated file.

I was able to make this work, too but now, everytime I hotsync, Slidetogo and sheettogo gets reinstalled! Not wordview tho. Strange. Anyone has this problem?

The reinstall has been explained before, but here goes again:
At hotsync time, DTG checks for the apps, like this:
foreach app in WordView+ SheetToGo SlideShowToGo; do
if app not in handheld memory
if app not in Launcher folder on first card found[1]
reinstall app to handheld memory
endif
endif
done
[1]: The "first card found" will be the external card if there's any card present, otherwise Int. Media. Who knows what DTG does on devices with two real slots, like the Alphasmart Dana.
Chances are that you have a copy of WordView+ in the Launcher folder on your card (or in Int. Media if you sync without a card inserted).
AFAIK, the only workaround to this problem is to copy the three apps to all cards you have, plus Int. Media. Needless to say, this is not a good solution if you use lots of cards.
