I just wonder can I use the Bluetooth memory stick on the TH-55 with the latest 2.1A driver at http://www.css.ap.sony.com/clie/default.asp/cat/Clie%20Handheld

Thanks for advice.

I assume in theory you can, but the top would stick out of the slot & you wouldn't be able to close the MS door. It would make it a fairly fragile package

I just tried installing the drivers (2.1A) mentioned, but it screwed up my stick slot. They say it is only for the NX70

I suspect a combination of mixing and matching components may work, or wait until there is a "2.1C" update. Please let me know if anyone finds a working combination.

The BT stick does stick out, but it is not that bad (only around 1/8" past the edge, about the same as the open door). You won't want to leave it sitting in the slot all the time

Thanks for the try.

Does Sony Japan support get any response on the issue? It is a suprise that the driver support OS5 but crashes on TH55.

I really don't understand why the BT version of TH55 not sale in US , like the memory stick BT.

Also don't know if there is any R&D on Memory stick GSM/GPRS module.

Cheers.

Assuming they sell the WiFi only TH55 in the far east, I suspect there will be a service pack later on (like they did for the NX70)

BTW: There are OS5 specifics, but also memory stick driver specifics. The memory stick layered drivers were greatly simplied in going from the NX/NZ series to the UX/TH series (which also speed up memory stick data access).

I *suspect* if someone pieced together parts of the different releases they may get something to work. View that as a challenge.

My guess: Bluetooth was slow to take off in the USA (relative to Europe at least), and Sony made a decision to focus on WiFi (as reflected in the TH55 packaging decisions)
FWIW: given the choice of only Bluetooth *or* WiFi, I'll take WiFi

Ask the FCC, not Sony.

...no, ask sony! Sony has to know the requirements of the FCC. They were able to bring out the TG50, the NZ90 and the UX50 with build in Bluetooth as well.

I completely agree. Sony brought the UX50 without any FCC problems concerning BT. Somebody dropped the ball.

Unfortunately, Wi-Fi is not everywhere, whereas my bluetooth phone would work just about everywhere, so fwiw, I would have choosen BT... but prefer both :D

I heard that in USA you really have a lot of WLAN spot's (even at mc-donalds?!).

In my city there are about 7 hotels with wlan-hotspots. Connection is about 0.60 usd p. minute (2 Mbits)! (there are cheaper offerings when you buy e 1/2 or 1 hour card. Time runs from the first connection if you use it or not). There is one free hotspot in the middle of the town in a students restaurant. I didn't ever see anyone using it, but did a trial connection and it works.

Connection using bluetooth over mobile telephone does cost about the following:

method payed per minute:

about usd 0.20 per minute with 9,6 kbps! Using a hscsd-phone you get about 37 kpbs with a good connection at the same price.

method payed per data (gprs):

1000 bytes for about usd 0.08 at about 30 kpbs. (much more expensive as the previous method, if you have hscsd).

And I really would like to know (from our stone-age-europe) how the taxes are in japan using theyr cf-phs.... uso. cards which can be used in the nx- and nz-series. I heard you have high-speed-mobile-networks and pay a fixed price per month and can surf as much as you want .... :.-( Buhhuuuuu!

I can confirm this. I got curious before I had to send the TH55 back to Sony so I installed the driver for the Bluetooth Memory Stick. Unfortunately, just inserting the card locks the device up.

Wanted to let ya'll know before anyone went out and bought one.
