Hey, i got a nx80v and had a couple of questions about converting my video files for the clie.

1. Converting Avi to mpeg 2 will not work with image convertor, is this true? doesn't seem to work for me.

2. in the Help section of Image convertor, it says it can use the image convertor to transfer avi into clie movie format... but no suscess for me.???

3. Whats the main differences between Long/Standard/Quality mode. I usually use Quality, and i love it. I tried long once and it sucks big nuts... even tho it saves MAJOR space, i'd rather not even bother watching videso in long mode. Standard, i JUST did and seems similair to quality but takes half the size? any differences you guys can tell me?

Was wondering about those. I was sucuessful in converting alot of movies, but they take forever, any way to speed up the process?

thanks

Mike, if anyone provides me with a server, i can upload video files for you guys, i'm mainly into cartoons/anime/and whatever lol but yea

thanks

1) Image Converter doesn't support converting MPEG-2, or DVDs. It does work with MPEG-1 & Some .AVI Video Codecs. If your source files are MPEG-2 or DVDs, you will need to convert to MPEG-1 or .AVI for Image Converter to accept them.

2) Most of the time the Audio Codec/Settings (VBR instead of CBR) is at fault for not being able to convert .AVI. Equally, it can be video. You should either convert to MPEG-1 with TMPEGEnc or recompress the AVI with Audio @ PCM and Video as DivX, or Indeo Video... DivX has worked well for me, although I hear many people say it does not... The recompression can be done with Virtual Dub, but the Interface takes some learning.

3) Mainly it is the datarate. Datarate is proportional to quality and file size. Long mode also has a lower video resolution. The NX series Clié does not support a 4th mode, which is 30fps and much higher datarate.

The process can't be speeded up, the slowest part is the conversion to MPEG-4 by Image Converter. It has pretty much nothing to do with if the input is AVI or MPEG-1, so you can't really do much to speed up conversion except to free up as much CPU power for Image Converter as possible.

There is a FTP where some members upload videos that many download. Download speeds are usually slow, but there is a lot of space to put videos. Find out more about it with the Forums @ http://www.ncoday.com/forum/

Thanks for the info, i just signed up for the forums at ncoday.

btw, i'm mainly concern about question number 3, what does everyone usually convert the movies/video files to? quality/standard/or long? like i said, i hate long, its basically useless unless you just wanna watch some crap video with audio. yet i dont see much difference from standard and quality.

I use standard quality - this let's you get approx. 1 hour video on a 128mb memory stick, and the quality is reasonable.

Standard is noticably better than long, not so "blocky", in my opinion.

I'm using a UX50, so not sure if my experience is helpful to you.

If you checkout my Tutorial, somewhere in there I have a link to a utility that lets you tweak the data-rates Image Converter produces. Grab that, and experiment. I don't find Long, Standard, and Quality to be good enough options, since different files need different datarates. Fast motion does need the video quality offered by Quality, but it usually doesn't need the audio improvements of it since I'm find with standard audio. So check it out and find that file... It also calculates the size of the file based on length, which is very handy!
