I moved up from a Handspring to NX80V.
I wonder if the compact flash can be used to display digital pictures (my digital camera uses CF) or used for back up? I get the impression the CF is used only for communication?
Is Sony memory Sticks the only 'stick' to use successfully?
Any other tips / necessary downloads for a new NX user?
Thanks

Welcome. You own (in my very biased opinion) probably the best PDA ever made so far. There is a WEALTH of info on here regarding how to maximize the use of the CF slot. I would highly suggest you read as much as you can, then post with any unanswered questions you may have. GOOD LUCK!
Your fist step however should be to go here:CF Utility (http://snow.prohosting.com/cfutil/)

Welcome to the NX family, if you already haven't, read the first post on the list for good apps that you should get. And use this site for anything and everything related to your CLIE.

last holidays I just stuck the cf card from a dig camera into the slot, and bang - there were the pictures. Didnt need to install extra/3rd party drivers for it.
But enjoy your NX:)

Wow! Really!?? Is that unusual? Has anyone else ever tried this?

The NX73/80 come with CF drivers built in. They are limited, but you can access files in any app that supports multiple cards. For things like movies and MP3's on the CF card, you will need some of the other tools found in the CF forum.

You can see pictures on your Cf without extra drivers, it helps to have a decent viewer to see Jpg's, some launchers view jpg's but I use an additional viewer called jpgshow it's brilliant because it flips images to landscape quickly and although I use a Nikon D1 that shoots 7 meg images I can stick a full 256 meg CF card in and view all the pictures as thumbnails and then scroll through the full sized images very quickly.
To take images using your built in camera on to the CF card you will need pelaca's patched apps (do a search on cliesource) These drivers were the first thing I put on my NX73v when it arrived and in fact were the reason I bought an NX, because I use CF cards in my job. The new clie's look amazing TH55 especially but the biggest drawback for me is the lack of CF support. if someone invented a MS adapter so you could plug a CF into the back of a MS and then plug that into the clie that would sway me a little, but the fact is Sony can see they lose out when people start using CF over MS, If sony actually made a CF card it would still be an extortionate price.
Interesting point :: last week my sandisk 128 mb Memory Stick died and I went without one for a week and just moved everything over to my CF until the new one arrived, and to be honest I didn't really miss it.

Thanks to everyone for the info and your willingness to enrich a newcomer to the Clie family.
I did try taking the CF out of my camera and into my Clie. After some trial and error I did get to view my pics under the Prism Utility. Pretty cool to use as a viewer too!

Congrats on your new buy and welcome to the NX club. Probably one of the best machine you can purchase...my opinion of course. You'll have to check into WiFi and Bluetooth, if you haven't already. Have fun!
