I purchased a Nx73v last month (1/20) from compusa. At the time there was a listed $50 rebate. There was much discussion as to whether the rebate was valid. It contained the same number a rebate that ended 1/3/04.

Today I received word from SONY that the rebate is not valid. They cite I purchased the NX73 outside of the rebate period.

Has anyone gotten the same message?

The rebate form I have says receipt must be dated between October 31, 2003 and January 31, 2004...must be postmarked no later than 30 days after purchase date.

I spoke to Sony. The rep said that the rebate was an error but they will honor it for those who call. (She also stated whe would try to have the system changed so no calls would be necessary.)

Sony has a bit of a reputation for this, I believe. I got denied a rebate on a Sony external DVD burner. They are quite ambiguous about the reason.

They will list it as either 'purchase made outside the qualifying dates' or they will say that it wasn't postmarked by the right date.

I keep copies of all the rebates I submit so I can usually debunk the first but the second is much harder to refute with them.

Just keep pushing it especially if you have documentation.

As far as receiving rebates, rebates take 8 to 10 weeks. I wouldn't expect to hear about mine for another couple of weeks.

Actually folks, that's:

[URL=http://www.web-rebates.com/sony/status.asp]

I just checked on my rebate. My rebate form clearly states *1/30/04* as the end date for purchases, but now the site says the rebate ended 1/3/04 so I'll be denied my rebate (I purchased my NX80v between the two dates in question). Fortunately, I saved copies of everything.

I have a friend who knows the Attorney General pretty well, so we'll see who wins on this one :-) ...assuming Sony would like to continue to do business here.

Have you folks noticed that rebate fraud has become a new focus by the gov't lately (especially with this being an election year)? It's not a real good time to piss people off now that companies are increasingly under the microscope.

Hopefully Sony will fix their error without any ugly publicity.

I just called the rebate center phone number (1-800-268-3438), and they were very nice and took care of the date disparity.

I also asked on behalf of everyone here, and she said that if anyone is due a rebate but wrongly denied, just call them and they will take care of it.

I hope this helps.

So each of us has to call in to figure this out, even after we already sent out the rebate?

Thanks for the heads up. I called the Sony Rebate Center and they corrected the date while I was on the phone. Friendly, courteous staff.

I do wish they would do a fix at the Service Center level, so we would not need to call. But, hey, it's like Health Insurance claims... they like to hear our voices.

Just checked mine, same deal. Will be calling tomorrow.

Seems to me like it is just another scheme to get out of paying rebates. If they were really honest about it they would fix the problem for those how don't read the boards.

I just sent out my rebate on Saturday. As soon as it gets into their system I'll call them up.

Why does Sony suck like that???

I think you'll be seeing two things in the immediate future: 1) lots of things being sold with rebates because it allows manufacturers and retailers to advertise lower prices and not have to live up to them on sales where the consumer doesn't send in for the rebate or does so outside of "small print" rules and regs. Also 2) gov't cracking down on misleading or false rebates. Expect the attys general offices to be cracking down on fraud or misleading ones.

It's not just Sony.

I'm considering NOT buying anything with a complicated rebate anymore, because frankly they're usually just not worth the effort or hassle. I'll buy a competing product instead. Rebates will eventually become a wonderful way for companies to LOSE customers instead of gaining them.

I bought my NX73v back in November because it was the one I wanted, the fact that I got a rebate and a case from SonyStyle was just a small bonus (I don't even use the case).

Generally that's what happens with rebates, they're a hook. Buy something because you want it and are going to use it. If you're going to be upset about the rebate circumstances don't bother sending it in. Life's too short.

Who's saying we buy stuff because of the rebates.

I factor the rebate into determining the value of the purchase. And i expect to be paid the rebate when I send in the proper documentation.

I bought my nx73v for $220 with tax after the rebate...(which has been approved on Sony's website.)..to me it was worth the cost at $220.

At $270 I might have thought about the NX80v (which I ended up buying anyway as a backup to the NX73v for $278)

i least they didn't deny anyones rebate, you just have to get it sorted out individually.
