View Full Version : Is it possible for a hard reset to erase a memory stick?

Hi, I was just trying out the zlauncher 4.00beta and I had to hard reset my clie. When I tried to restore my clie with BackupMan I realized EVERYTHING on my memory stick was gone. Everything in Palm/Launcher folder was gone but when I looked in the programs folder there was still some data left. Anyway I'm pretty pissed off about losing all my data and all but if anyone knows what caused this or how to fix it please help me.

Thanks

That's quite unusual. It does sound possible though. I've always been in the habit of removing my MS when my CLIE crashes or even during a sift reset.

wow i had no clue you have to remove a memory stick when you do a soft or hard reset. Does it say that in the manual or anything? ahhhh.

Did you remove the MemoryStick while the MS access light was on? If so, the MS could have been corrupted.

i didn't remove the memorystick at all. I thought that when I perform a hard reset everything on the clie will be erased not on the memorystick too. It's weird cuz I've done a hard reset before and this didn't happen. I thought MS was a place to backup the Clie but if that is no longer safe is there a way to backup the MS?

If you do a hard reset nothing on your MS should be changed. I doubt it was the hard reset that did anything but rather the MS got corrupt for some reason.

I agree with copycat, its something else that went wrong at same time.
FWIW you dont have to remove the memstick for resets.

so what do you think i should do? I can start putting all my data back on the MS with the risk that it'll happen again or do you think I should contact the company that makes the MS?

Perhaps the memory stick became corrupted for some reason (maybe it just died or maybe a new program did it) and it caused the PDA to crash.

I didn't say that you had to do it, I just said I usually do. If I see a fatal exception, I remove my MS and then reset my device.

Hmmm...that's really scary. I'd have a nervous breakdown if that happens. But they never said u need to remove ur MS while performing soft or hard reset. StepanBartl, may be you should write to Sony and enquire abt this.

I think I'll write to SanDisk first and try to find out what went wrong with the MS and then im going to try Sony.

Are you absolutely positive you lost all your data on your stick? Maybe you aren't connecting it correctly. If it is corrupted won't it just mess up anything you put on it afterward? Maybe you could try a different stick to make sure it isn't your clie that is doing this ie not reading the stick.

never had that happen. could be a rogue program. what was the clie running when you hard reset?

it was Zlauncher 4.00 Beta. I tried putting the memorystick in my dads UX and it didn't find any data. It's weird because some preferences and stuff saved with programs was still on there.

Hi, so I emailed SanDisk and Sony about the problem I had with my MS. SanDisk didn't even reply ( emailed them about a week ago) and Sony said this:

Thank you for contacting SONY Online Support.

We do not know why the memory stick was empty. Did you do backups to the memory stick?

Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance.

Great customer support isn't it??? Next time I'll think twice before buying a Sony!

Pester them til they give u some more explanations of what could have happened. ;) Sometimes they need some pestering before they will do their job professionally.

It doesn't prevent corrupting the MS anyway. As said before, a reset does nothing to your memory stick. It's the "rogue program", that caused the need for the reset, that did the damage already.

You can try using an undelete to restore files.

I've soft reset, warm reset, hard reset and the MS has never been erased. Are you sure the MS was not being accessed while you performed the hard reset?

A very SCARY thought if the MS was affected... *bummer*

SB Did u ask them to check ur MS? I mean check if the data still in ur MS? Or ur defective pda has somehow erased all data during that soft/hard reset?

I asked them if they want to check the MS but they said that it's probably the clie. Now they can send it back to me in 6 weeks and say that the PDA is fine and theres nothing I can do.

I've had a lot hard resets, but never a problem with MS. The sandisk support is a bit dumb. I had as well a corrupted CF-card, after two emails, where they asked me again the same questions although I had already a form filled out they replaced my card, didn't even wont to see my receipt!
To your MS problem- have you checked with scandisk your MS? If it was corrupted, it must have found errors, if not- try a new backup program.

StepanBartl, like nx70 said, if u have a card reader, use Scan Disk to check if ur MS is truly corrupted. Also hassle Best Buy every week, so that they can speed up their process or update u abt ur pda.
