I agree, Sony probably offered a handful of larger distributers a promotion price in exchange for sales time frame (number of sales per day), best buy and ecost probably dropped that again to up the numbers in hope of getting larger distributions when the units are released. The combined discounts to get market interest probably brought it to $319. Neither type of discount is uncommon, but only on items that they do not believe they have market information on, or want new market info. Similar pre-release discounts were offered back on the NR which was a new type of device from sony (clamshell).
Although the UX has done okay, they probably did this to test market on a lower end device in the mid-level PDA market with wifi.
or maybe just test the market just in times when OS6 was released ..

I think it was a simple mistake. Why wasn't the other new models discounted?

because they considered them not worth the time/money of a market profile, or decided they already knew what they wanted to know. Then again, you may be right, its hard to know. But the fact that both BB and ecost had similar pre-release deals, that sounds like a market profile rather than a mistake. I used to do retail accounting, but I am not perfect and won't claim to be, I am just giving my best guess. :)
we will all know once the bill arrives. :)

I'm assuming at this point that the deal was legit and any who pre-ordered at $319.00 will get that price.
If Best Buy is going to cancel those orders, what are they waiting for? I haven't gotten any email from them, and the order is still present when I login to the BB.com site.

This is the best price I found so far @ this time.
Etronics.com Sony Clie PEG-TH55 $379.99 + $10.00 = $389.99
Somebody tell me me if there's a better price and shipping.
I probably go with a better price... than a earlier shipping...

As of earlier today, ecost.com had the lowest price. $399 when you view the TH page, but $339 after it's in your cart.

Check out ecost.com. Add the th55 to your shopping basket and the price should be $339.00, with free shipping. Others have said that eCost charges a handling fee, so you may want to email them about that.

What are you talking about?
The topic of the thread is that BB is now charging $399.
If you're talking about eCost, it's list price is $399, but is reduced to $339 when you put the TH55 in your cart.

Guys, calm down and actually read what he wrote!! davemohan wrote that the TH was listed on the BB site for $399, but it said 'Coming soon' and didn't give you an option to pre-order. jookie was pointing out that BB updated the site, so now you can actually pre-order it at $399. Hi, I'm new here. I have an SJ30, my wife has an old N610. I'm looking to upgrade soon.
I just checked eCost, and I can't find the TH55 anywhere on the site. I tried going through the whole list and then I tried searching for it specifically, but I can't find it.
Any thoughts?

Thanks, I searched TH-55, and even Sony Clie TH-55, and it pulled up nothing. Apparently the hyphen between TH and 55 causes it to miss it. But it's not listed unless you search for it, weird.

See the top of the above web page and click on details. Well, that would definitely be cool. I looked through the details, and it doesn't have the date this promotion started. And I wonder how this is affected since our TH orders are pre-orders, so our CC doesn't get charged until after the promotion ends. It would certainly be a nice bonus if it ends up applying to us!!

I doubt our preorders qualify for the $50. It looks like they raised the price in order to accomodate the discount. Good luck.

I do remember that offer when I pre-ordered mine. I got in right away, so if the deal applies to me, it would to everybody else here.
I didn't think much of it at the time because the wording was different. It said purchase any "Palm PDA," which I took to mean PDAs made by that company, not any PalmOS PDA. There was a big graphic for the promotion with a T3 or something--definitely no Clies in sight.
The wording now is a lot broader, as the Palm qualifier has been dropped completely.
I think maybe I'll email Best Buy and find out.

Just money you can use on their web site. There are a bunch of restrictions, such as they can't be used for gift cards, in-stores purchases, etc. For this particular deal, you have to use them before May 1st.
I think I could come up with something to buy before then!

Does anyone know if there is a minimum purchase type thing for these digital dollars? I found a spindle fo 50 blank DVDs on there reg. priced at $100 but on sale for $49.99. If I could use my $50 dig$s on that, I would get a TH55 + 50 DVDs, a value of $500, for $320. I'd be ok with that.

One thing I noticed about the 50 digital dollars thing is that they email you the digital dollars after you preorder it. This means to me that the actual price of the PDA is not deducted by 50 dollars, you just get a 50 dollar online glorified gift certificate. Maybe you can turn around and then apply this to your PDA order, but as it reads on their website, it doesn't reduce the cost of your PDA.

02-18-2004, 08:51 PM
I think you're right--can't be used on current purchase.
That's a pretty common type of promotion though. I bought TaxCut at Staples and they are sending me a $10 gift card. It would have been nice to use it on the software, but I'll find something to spend it on. ;)

Also, what is the cheapest place to buy the TH55 so far?

Check their site. They have FAQs about that kind of thing. I'm sure you could use it, though. It might even say on the back of the card.

Right now the cheapest seems to be eCost.com:
http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=387195
It's listed as $399.00, but is reduced to $339.00 once you add the item to your shopping cart.

It's good advice to check the site, but I actually think you can NOT use BB cards when ordering from their online store. My wife got me a BB gift card for Christmas, and I wanted to use it to order Tivo and wasn't able to figure out how.

I just looked at BB.com, and you appear to be correct. I looked at a $200 gift card. The description reads:
Gift Cards are shipped free of charge and are redeemable toward future in-store purchases.
I just assumed that you could use the card online. I think most stores work that way.

It's really annoying. BB constantly stresses that their B&M stores and their online stores are two separate companies, but I think that makes it very confusing (and frustrating) for the customer. They both have the same name - they should work a little closer together, IMO. And, just for the record, I actually like BB unlike some people on here. I just have been frurstrated in the past by the lack of synergy between the regular and online stores.
