Turn it over and look at the label. If it says "PEG-UX40/U" it's a US model.

If you turn it over and it says: PEG-UX40/God Save The Queen!, then you can be sure it's a English (GB) model! ;) lol

Actually, there's a UX40/E.
And, if you look at Sony's site, they tell you that you're screwed if you own an US model and don't have a US address:

Sony CLIÉ handheld computer models which are marketed and sold in the United States are customized with select software and features for the U.S. market (excluding territories). Other than Canadian purchases which have a separate registration and warranty process, only the Sony Handheld Service center in San Diego, California, has the technical capabilities to service CLIÉ handheld models sold in the United States. Further, due to customs/logistics requirements and limitations, the Sony San Diego Handheld Service Center only ships serviced products back to addresses in the United States. Understandably, the limited warranty offered by Sony Electronics Inc. for such products is therefore valid only in the United States (excluding territories), and Sony must limit registrations to U.S. addresses. Please provide a U.S. address if you seek to register and/or request warranty service. Sony very much appreciates your purchase of your new CLIÉ handheld computer.

Regards,
