View Full Version : NX 73 vs 80: My Impressions As Dual Owner

I bought my 73 about a month ago. It's really a great PDA. I've never been able to use a PDA so much, but wow, that thing is truly everything I need. Today I went and bought an 80, since the price was 300$ after rebate. I figured I liked the 73 so much, the 80 would just be a little bit better with a little more RAM and a better camera, to boot! I planned to give my girlfriend my 73, and she was all for it!

Well, I got home, and I'm playing with the 80 and I must say that I'm disappointed. I'm glad I have a 73. The main gripe that I have with the 80 is taking pictures!!! When you are taking pictures indoors at night time, low lighting, it's dark as hell! And when you want to brighten up the picture by using so-called "slow shutter" it's also slow! Using the flashlight "capture light" slows things down horribly too. I sure hope someone has figured this out.

Even at the same resolution the 73v can handle, the 80v kinda seems slow to take the picture. I dunno what gives.

Well, will you look at that, I just got a bloody nose writing up this little observation. Yes, it sort of pisses me off.

Comments, anyone?
Right now, if anyone asked me, i'd tell them to go for a 73V!!!

The video recorder with the light on is kinda cool.
Me and my friends shot little Blair Witch videos :D

Is there any way to speed up the shutter speed on this sucker? I mean, why is it so much slower than on the 73?

You can search for Lightspeed and shutter on ClieSource. I'm having the same problem, but the explenation found in one of these threads satsified me and made more sense. I vaguely remember it has to do with the Photo-chip which has to take more light in for more res. And therefore it takes more time till it gathered it. (I'm not good about recounting the whole issue correctly). I personally like the 1.3 pics because you can really save them for longer and use them. Yeah - no Photocam, but I see it as very good replacement.

Sony should have just delayed the shutter sound, I'm guessing that would have saved them some complaints.

yes... the NX80V's camera is a bit slow, that i barely use it anymore (just prefer to use my 2.0 megapixel Vodafone cell)...

i was coming from an NX70V, so i had no choice but to go for the NX80V

Its so slow because the NX80 cam has, as my NZ90, a "CCD" camera, which needs more time to save pictures and of course, its file size is much bigger. Try to take pics in 640x480 and you will see, it needs almost the same time on the NX73, which has got a "CMOS" camera. A problem of my NZ camera is taking pics with low-light conditions. It is much darker than on my old NX70. I get the same conditions, if I use slow-shutter closing, but the picture will be washed if i move the NZ. I never had the problems with my NZ.

An other problem of ccd cams is its need for power. For ewxample, I could record an over 1 hour movie with NX. Now with NZ, I only can record 30minutes.

I'm sorry Mad Dog, but I'm inclined to think that you don't know what you're talking about. CCD and CMOS are one in the same. CCD stands for charge coupled device ... aka charge coupled CMOS.

Thanks for your help, though :)

i will never belive to an "unregisterd"...

describes the CMOS vs. CCD difference.

Don't know why Unregistered posted his/her snotty remarks.
Oh wait! This is the anonymous internet, we can be silly snotty brats! (Uh, like I too just was. Apologies.)

No... as mentioned in the post before this CMOS does not equal CCD....

Thanks for your help, though ;)

if i remeber correctly one advantage of cmos over ccd, all things being equal, is that cmos chips tend to have a wider contrast latitude than ccd devices. That is the perceptive range between darkest and brightest parts of an image are greater for cmos devices.

Wait 'til they put Foveon chips into PDA cams. They don't throw away 2/3 of the incoming light so they can be faster. That should speed things up a bit!

OK today i gave it more of a try. The camera is great, even at highest resolution, if you're outside. If you're inside and there is only ambient lamp lighting on (as opposed to direct light or bright office lighting) it seems as though you're screwed. Which totally sucks, but oh well.

I think the NX73 may be the better PDA for the money here. I got the 80 for 300 after rebate and the 73 for 220 after rebate. But the 73 is black, the camera is fast, and I can't tell the difference about the added RAM... Oh well, my girlfriend is happy with her new Clie :)
