View Full Version : screen twisting flimsy?

I have a question about the display screen and how it feels in the tablet mode. It seems to me that it has some excessive side-to-side (left to right) play in it. It works fine, twists okay, but the play seems more than what I have seen in the NR or NX series PDAs. The screen itself seems a little more flimsy, but that is most likely to it's being thinner (to cut down on thickness).
Anyone have any comments? Should I consider returning this?

At least I'm not alone. Geesshhh, for $800, you would have thought they would do a better job!!

Remember, there's a gap between the screen part and the hinge itself to allow it to swivel freely -- if you push it, the screen will 'lean' into this gap. It's not suprising that it feels different than the previous models since it's pretty much a brand new hinge design.

I'm referring to the left-right motion, like is was loose where it attaches to the swivel point. It isn't that bad, but it is not as firm as I have seen in any of the others with this feature.

no play in mine, but I do have the gap that others have indicated (when the screen is closed between the body and the screen). When it's in tablet mode, the gap is non existent.
I'm toying with the idea of returning it; that gap is making me nuts. Or should I just say the hell with it? I have no other operational issues otherwise.

are you retunring it to get another nz90? if so dont bother it seems most of them have it in some degree or another..if returning nz90 perm just for the gap, maybe hold on the nz90 even with its quirks (stupid cradle, stupid stylus, and stupid gap), still a great pda

There were a number of people who reported the gap, Littlesix. Don't remember which thread. I have it also. Somebody in engineering was off a few microns....

Oh, I'd return it for another one, but if it seems that most (or all of them) have the gap, then I'd acquiesce and not return it. It doesn't hamper me by any means, but it just one of those things....

yeah because if everything else is working you might get another nz90 back with dead pixels or worse...and still have the gap..

That's why I tossed the post out there - wanted to hear from some logical voices :)
It did cross my mind that I might walk away from the transaction worse than when I started. Maybe I'll just cool my jets. I've been passing it around to other people to give it the once over, and I seem to be the only one that notices the gap (Imagine that)

I saw it right away- initial look in the truck at CC... Something in the hinge is off a tinch. Doesn't really bother me and it might even close with wear. Stick with the one you got!!!

Is the stylus thicker than on the NX/NR?

Thanks oneeye, I was thinking the same thing. In my uneducated guess, I thought it was gapping because of the band that's screwed around the edge. Guess I ought to lighten up about my 1/16th" gap, huh? ;) - dm

On mine the gap is worse in the tablet mode than in the non-tablet. The screen actually seems to be slightly warped upwards, it doesn't come in contact with the little bumper dots. I am considering retuning it, but the display on this is soooo nice I may get a crappier one in exchange.

For what it's worth, mine does the same but in the opposite way. Tablet mode I'm cool.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to listen to the voices of reason (the other posts on here) and just get over it. It doesn't hamper it's use and I'll get over it with time. Hell, my laptop lid has it too and I've managed to live a full productive life with that...hehehe...
yeah def don't return it. I always have in the past and I always got a worse one and then I would cry longing for the first that was only slightly messed up. However with this clie there are not problems and suprisingly great battery life.

I'm leaning toward it being in the screen, too. The gap along the edge for the camera body looks fine. The screen loks like it flares up. When I push to close the gap it clearly flexes at the screen pivot. No biggy. Mine has zero defects so far, I'll save the trade in for something worse...Hopefully that won't happen!!!
