View Full Version : TH55 to sync with outlook?
Sorry if this is an obvious question. I'm considering coming over from the darkside but I really like the email inbox sync in the PPC
OS. I've read that an outlook conduit is not included with the TH apps. Does this mean it won't work or that I will have to purchase it?
Thanks.

the standard version of intellisync is included on the install cd, so you can sync with outlook. on the other hand, i found pocketmirror pro to be much more friendly and powerful.
The reason I asked this was because Edfrmbrighthand, in his review, stated that no conduits that allowed syncing with outlook were included. I'm wondering if this is because of cost or perhaps it doesn't work with the new Clie organization software concept. Any thoughts?

If you read the online manual for the TH55, it does say it will sync with both Lotus & Outlook but, as "unregistered" said, it has to use Intellisync.
Come to think of it, I've always used Intellisync, provided by Sony, to sync my various PDAs.

I have been asking myself (& others) the same question. Hopefully it will just "ignore" the stuff it cannot sync.
If you want to sync *everything*, you'd need to use their desktop app & not Outlook.
And, according to their manual, you can't choose to hotsync with BOTH Outlook & the Clie desktop app - you must choose.

I don't understand Sony's reasoning in limiting you to pick to sync with either Outlook or Clie Organizer. Is it a technical limitation?
Exactly who is this device and the new Clie Organizer software developed for? Aren't most PDA users sitting in corporations where MS Outlook is the standard calendar, email and PIM application? I know I am. And I'm dying to use the new Clie Organzier functions on the TH55. But these items won't sync to Outlook because outlook has no idea about them. And I can't sync to Clie Organizer for PC because I have to sync to Outlook because that is my corp. standard. Catch-22.
I can't sync my handwritten notes and embedded pictures, etc. then what is the point of even having them?
Maybe this will be updated in a later release.

I'm wondering - Pocket Mirror Pro has an option with Palms where you can "backup" to the Palm Desktop all data after it has finished it's sync to Outlook.
I will try this once I have the unit but since the Clie Organizer is so much different than the Palm Desktop???????????????:)

I'm guessing that Sony rewrote its desktop app from the ground up to accommodate the the new Clie Manager. I wouldn't bet on anything being backward compatible.
Maybe the next version of Pocket Mirror Pro. It's highly unlikely that Outlook will try to modify its program in the future since Sony & the Palm OS in general represent competition for the Pocket PC.

Agreed - it will be an experiment to see if it will work. PMP/Chapura hasn't yet started supporting the additional fields for the T3 so it may be awhile if Chapura even decides to support the TH55 and it's seperate needs.
I'd think that the only way you'll be able to sync to Outlook and to the Clie Desktop Organizer will be to have everything backup to the Clie Organizer and you'll have to facilitate changes to Outlook and then they'll get picked up by the desktop component after then next sync. That's how it worked with PMP before but obviously these new "graphic" fields will have some uniqueness.
Only time will tell of course. :)

I've read through the manual for the TH55 (which I intend to upgrade to from my NR70v) and find the following:
1. The "standard" Datebook, Address, todo and notes applications can be synced with Outlook. To quote:
From page 56:
"Intellisync Lite
-------------------
You can synchronize data of Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, etc., on your CLIÉ handheld with Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Organizer on your computer.
Install Intellisync Lite on your computer from “CLIÉ Utilities” of the Installation CD-ROM Menu, and make sure you connect your CLIÉ handheld to your computer with the USB cable and plug adapter."
So all the software required is provided. Additionally the new PIM application "CLIE Organizer" (SIC) syncs via it's own conduit to the Sony enhanced desktop. So both conduits can be run at once.
I presume (hope) that the latter conduit also sends over the standard PIM data to provide contact/address etc etc info for the SONY Desktop software. Can anyone confirm this?
A final thought - isn't this machine almost exactly where you'd hoped Apple would've been with the Newton if they'd stuck at it?
regards,
Kieron.

Yes, with a caveat of confirmation when I have it in my hands. :)

I believe it when I see it since the Clie has always had the ability to sync with Outlook (using Intellisync) or with the Palm Desktop app provided. It has never synched with both at once.
I'm hoping you are right.

Except for the handwriting recognition and the lack of portrait/landscape options, it's pretty close!!!

You took the words right out of my mouth. That is all I've been thinking about since I've seen the demos and movies of the Clie Organizer software. This is the first application that has even come close to providing what the Newton gave us 4 or even 8 years ago.
Remember Newt's Intelligence feature? You would write "call Bob" and it would learn the most popular Bob in your address book and grab his phone number for you. Clie Organizer is getting close to this with the sort of hyperlinking from text in an email to setting up a calendar event.
Back to the topic at hand, I really hope that I can sync my Outlook calendar AND my "enhanced" organizer data with my desktop. If I can't I'm going to be missing a large part of the value of this device.
PS--Where can I download the manual. I search at sony but couldn't find it.

This links was provided in an earlier thread:
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=387936&native_or_pdf=pdf
It's a direct link to the PDF manual for the unit. However - a lot of the documentation appears to be HTML based and on the CD that comes with it.
Now that units are being shipped in America I hope someone will answer the "how does it sync" question pretty soon.

Here is a selection from page 73 of the manual via the link that was provided.
>Is third party backup or synchronization software installed on your computer or CLIÉ
handheld?
In such a case, you may not synchronize some data/files using CLIE Organizer for
PC (or Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ).
>You can synchronize Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, and Memo Pad of
your CLIÉ handheld with Microsoft® Outlook or Lotus Organizer after installing
Intellisync Lite on your computer.
However, if Date Book data is assigned to synchronize with Microsoft® Outlook or
Loutus Organizer in Intellisync Lite, Date Book data cannot be synchronized with
CLIE Organizer for PC and Palm™ Desktop for CLIÉ.
Do not assign Date Book data to synchronize with Microsoft® Outlook or Loutus
END:
There are some highlights and underlining that won't paste over from the Adobe file but now I'm totally confused until the device is in my hands. This indicates that you can't dupe the conduits but we will experiment when we have the device.
I don't see a problem with duplicating the data to the Clie Organizer as long as you don't change the data on the desktop component expecting it to "update" the handheld.
As soon as I get mine - trust me - I'll experiment. At the worst case scenario for me - I sync everything to Outlook except the datebook portion which syncs to the Clie Organizer on the PC. I use the handheld for data entry on all of my current units so no big deal.
Organizer in Intellisync Lite.

Here (http://www.companionlink.com/dl4pd.htm) is a program that claims to update between Outlook and the Palm Desktop instantly.
I've used Companion Link in the past but no experience with this Double Look Product.
This might be a solution to the Outlook sync issue? :)

... no way. Too expensive - that's PC software prices.
I still think that Sony are bright enough to have the standard (old) PIM applications sync via the usual IntelliSync conduits to Outlook whilst a seperate conduit adds the overlaid views to the Sony Desktop application.
If it doesn't I'll be really, really miffed.

... I'm not a lot clearer.
The manuals make reference to both CLIE Desktop for PC and Palm Desktop for PC - both applications can be synchronised with the CLIE. No suprise there.
The Datebook application is mentioned - as (of course) is the new uber-PIM - but no mention is made as to whether the PIM derives it's view of the world from the same database as the "old" datebook.
I have to say I'm beginning to get a sinking feeling here.
