Wow. I didn't know the NX80 was discontinued! I checked SonyStyle website today and it was merely listed under 'Clearance'

Hmm...I'd have to believe there is a new NX coming out soon then. I doubt they will discontinue that line for good. Then again maybe the UX will be the only clamshell.
Interesting that the UX-50 isn't listed as gone. Might squash the rumours that a new UX was to come out soon.

OH MY GOD! My 4 month old NX80 is listed under 'Classics'!!!
CLASSIC!??
...But price-drops on your so-called 'Flagship' device don't help either, griff.

My only hope is that they announce, or we at least hear rumours, about new devices (OS6 hopefully) BEFORE it's too late to cancel my pre-order.

What stunned me is that all of those models were released less than a year ago. Sony is releasing handhelds at the speed of light!

It makes sense that Sony would simplify their line-up; they had too many models. Now they have four at:
$199 $299 $399 $599 Palm, in contrast, has eight in just the Palm-branded line, excluding Treo etc.: Zire, $79 Zire 21, $99 Tungsten E, $199 Zire 71, $249 Tungsten T2, $329 Tungsten T3, $399 Tungsten W, $419 Tungsten C, $499 That's just too many too tightly spaced. And they aren't that different. For example, why even have the Zire still?

Will there ever be a new NZ model? By Sony standards, NZ90s still cost more than the UX50 does, so where's the new NZ with the top-of-the line everything AND built-in BT & Wi-Fi?
kjbad
02-11-2004, 11:00 AM
And HOW can the UX40 be discontinued so quickly? Did Sony goof that badly?

UX production stoped..wow well i assume that they did not sell well.

With the UX40, I think Sony probably did goof that badly. The UX50 is now at the UX40's release price anyhow, and the increment between the two was not worth foregoing the WiFi for.
But they never pushed it very hard either.
ClieKun
02-11-2004, 11:21 AM
it was a great Idea..cheaper and for some a perfect fix. Not everyone needed or wanted wifi.

Out of curiousity, I went to the Australia SonyStyle website. What a difference.
The U.S. has the three new Sony tablets plus the UX50. Australia has the TG25, TG35 and NX80. But also only four models, a number I think is pretty optimal. But their prices are so high it made me wonder if their exchange rate is worse than the Canadian Peso. CNN shows it to be slightly better; they just get reamed on the UX50, paying AU$1299 (US$1026) for a system that lists for USD$599. Nearly double.
The Canadians have a wider variety of Clies, including the TG50, and pay C***999 or US$756 for the UX50. Perhaps because they're closer to the less-expensive US Market.

Okay, that was weird. Why did the abbreviation for "Canadian Dollar" to get asterisked out? I put in the normal thing, have no idea why it failed. CA$ isn't allowed except when mangled via html? (There's embedded italics in there.)
I can see calling someone "Canadian" being borderline insulting, but replacing CA$ with (auto-replaced by the forum) C***? Let's just call it a "CPesos$" and be done with it. Just because it's Canadian doesn't always mean it's bad.

So why would Sony think I would buy a new TJ or TH when the older Palm 5.0 OS units cost less and do as much, if not more?
Maybe Sony did goof...

Personally, I thought the UX units were terribly overpriced for what they delivered. The usable RAM was miniscule, the screen undersized & the price overwhelming for all but well-heeled.
So Sony may not have "goofed" in the creation of the unit, merely in pricing. It made exactly the same mistake with their first unit, the 300 which barely made a dent in Palm's sales.
Their 710 was their first & most spectacular hit.
IMO.

*sniff sniff*... SJ22 was discontinued... *sniff sniff*
Then again, I never saw one update for it on the support site, so I'm not really shocked. For the price I paid and the potential it has, I guess I can live with "yesterday's" technology :D

They don`t problem is sony does not even know what products are going to be release and what are not. They are always creating new device. Its the Wime of the moment do they release devices.Means a during the product realease seasons time of the year.

I think what happened (and what kept me away from the UX-40 and UX-50) is the small screen size. What the manufacturers are realizing is that users want a small device, but they actually don't want to strain to read the screen. I like the form factor of the new Sony th-55, if it were just a little more robust.

look at sony.com/clie its pretty sparce. It looks like they will be releasing more models within afew months. Sony will need a low end budget $99 handheld. A nx80 replacement at $500 and another device with a keyboard or cf.

Who knows, maybe this is going to be Sony's new strategy. Fewer available devices, updated more often. The TJ27/37 sure came fast, and we may well see OS6 UX/TH very soon. Makes more sense, though, that they are quickly trimming the OS5 line, which they intend to keep, and will add to the number of models with separate OS6 devices. Two different price ranges. This is actually a very exciting time :)

Whoa!! Hold yer horses..it still can be your next Clie! The prices are getting ridiculous now on the NX80V!! I now see prices for BRAND-NEW 80's more that $200 less than I paid 4 months ago!

*dons future-prediction cap*
at $99 we will see the TJ-27 except it wont have a camera
at $199 we will see a TJ-27 with a camera and MP3
at $299 we will have a TJ-37
at $349 we will have a TH-60 with a faster processor and OS 6
at $399 there will be the TG-90 :D with the same specs as the TH-60 except for an OQO style sliding keyboard
at $499 there will be the NX-83 which will be the same as the NX-80 except it will have OS 6, the TH-60's faster sony processor, and a real flash.
at $599 we might see the UX-55 with 32 MB ram, a more round number for the internal MS (ie. 32 megs) faster handheld engine, and a camera that is actually useful. Oh, and a bigger screen.
While I'm dreaming, lets just say that all the new models will use a stylus comparable to the Tungsten T stylus in weight, function, and size, instead of the dreaded expanding toothpick of impeding doom.

So far Sony's new models have failed to beat Palm to the punch. If they have something up their sleeve, now would be a good time to show it.
I love the design of the UX-series, unique to PDAs. There's room for a 400+ MHz NX/NZ model, though. With at least a 2-megapixel camera, internal WiFi + BT, and keeping the MP3 (with remote).

zackepceo,
Hoping against hope that you're right about the stylus!
Meanwhile, it'd be really nice if the TH55 had landscape & BT...
kjbad,
>So far Sony's new models have failed to beat Palm to the punch. If they have something up their sleeve, now would be a good time to show it. <
Huh?
For years, since the 710, they beat Palm to the punch. Not to start a "my PDA is better than your PDA" war here, but Sony led the pack until last year when it put out high end models that were super-pricey & low end models that were so-so.
Frankly, I *really* wanted to return to the "Palm" fold with the T|3 but it simply did not meet my needs.
Other Sony regulars jumped ship for it *did* meet their needs.
We can agree to disagree, I think.

For the last two years Sony has been beating Palm to the punch. First with MP3, first with Hi-Res, both over a year ago. The early NX-series came out over a year ago, first of that form-factor with VG and a keyboard. The TG50 is still a super-classy model. The UX50 is only five months old and Palm has nothing in the same ballpark.
The new Sony models are shoring up the weaknesses created by the Zire 71 and Tunsten E(?), the low-price market. This has not generally been "punch" territory; it's value/pricepoint territory. And it looks like Sony is meeting those just fine.
None of the newest models are interesting to me; I need the keyboard and WiFi. But they hardly look like has-beens at those price points.
