View Full Version : Portable Battery Pack for UX50

I have to travel on business this month and don't feel like dragging my charger and cradle for a two day trip. I will need to recharge though.
Is there a battery pack like I used to have for my Palm IIIc? It took 4 AA batteries and plugged into the bottom of the IIIc (sync port).
Since the UX50 only has the USB port, can I plug something into that to charge it?
I want something small with a short cable.
I guess as a second option I could get a battery case from Radio Shack and cut the end off one of my many charging cables. I would still have to take the cradle.
Would this be safe, feeding 6v into the charging cradle?

I have not seen a battery pack for the UX yet, but there are other possibilities:
A small USB charger from Brando:
USB Charger Cradle (http://shop.brando.com.hk/ipdaux50syncchargercradlekit.php)
And a charger case from Surplus:
Charger Case (http://www.surplus.com.hk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=114)
I personally use the charger from brando, together with an optional car charger with an USB exit. That works fine, charging in the car with the adapter or on my laptop.
The case is to thick for carrying the UX all the time in it.

I have placed an order for the Brando Charger Cradle Kit where I could both hotsync and recharge. Definitely going to be useful as I bring my notebook during business trips, and leave the clie cradle and cable at home

I have the Brando Charging cradle kit #1 and Its a nice solution if you will be leaving it in your office and using the Sony Cradle at home but its not really that handy because its a bit bulky. Check out this post for an alternative solution to this http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41287

There is an accessory for UX models called Extended Battery (PEGA-EB40). It's like a battery pack that plugs in at the bottom of the unit. Place it on the charger cradle to charge it along with the unit. You can then carry the extended battery along with the unit and you have extended battery life.

costly little bugger. I don't suppose Proporta has an external solution for AA size batteries, like the one i used to have for my T665.

I have the extended battery. Simply put it's awesome. It extends the life by 3x. It's especially key if you plan on using the wifi a lot.
I also picked up the Brando Workshop Charger Cradle package #2. It lets me charge the UX50 and the external battery on the go by simply plugging the cradle into the usb port on my mac. Now I only need to carry the power cable for my powerbook and the minicradle/usb cable. One thought though - the cradle won't fit the Extended Battery the way it is when it ships. I used needle-nosed plier to remove one of the plastic docking pins on the cradle so I can mate it to the battery without a problem. The whole unit comes off the cradle a lot easier now, and for about 3 seconds of effort, I made the cradle 100x more usable.
There's also a hack that will let you reroute the power pins on the usb port in the UX50 to the battery charging unit. Then when you plug a usb cable in between the UX50 and a computer, the UX50 will charge at the same time. I'm not ready to take responsibility if I screw up the solder job so for now it's cradle-charging only for me.

Take a look on http://www.boxwave.com.
Great inf function (charge and sync) from PC to UX50 USBs,
but very small and ideal for travelling.

I checked the website but can't seem to find the pictures of the actual product. Is it just a retractable USb cable with a standard USB plug on one end and a mini USB plug on the other?

have a USB Battery pack. It takes 4 AA batteries and has a USB port on the top marked "Output DC +5V"
I was thinking of getting a USB charging kit and using the 4 AA's should give me quite a bit of time to play. I would prefer to take short trips without my laptop and having some tranpac flights I could use some real extended entertainment.
Anybody spot any obvious problems with this? I am leaning towards the Brando charger as opposed to the Surplus case.
TIA,
Jim

Actually, someone here adapted their UX cradle to accept the older battery chargers...

Would be nice to see a writeup on that. :)

If you have the Brando or Surplus USB charging solutions, you could hook them up to a set of AA batteries by using the Lil Sync USB AA Battery adapter http://www.pocketpctechs.com/detail.asp?Product_ID=USB-BATADPT01
It apparently regulates the voltage so you don't go over.
