View Full Version : Wireless dead - Anyone got this problem?
I was hesitant as to send this to the forums, as I'll probably be told to send the machine to service. I don't want to do this yet as I bought it in the US when living in Mexico and am now living in Spain.
My Wireless receiver seems to have busted in some way. It started giving me grief two months ago but a hard reset would fix it up and let me work again with it. Now after a hard reset it won't work either.
When I try to either scan for a network or connect to my own I get the "initializing" dialog and the Clie never finds anything. The wireless light comes on and off intermittently and slowly and if I try to cancel it stays at "Cancelling..." forever and I have to reset the thing.
I have no idea how to know what it is and whether I should take it to service or not (in Spain service shops charge an arm and a leg no matter what the machine has, they look up the model in a list and they charge you the same no matter what the problem is).
Also: Is there anyone in the list reading that lives in Madrid that can tell me of a shop I could take it to, should the need come to that?
Thanks in advance
Eduo

Out of sheer curiosity, is it still under warranty?
Winexprt: I bought it in september. I don't know what's the default warranty time for these things, but I don't have the original invoice with me any more (bought it after saving, in a business trip to the US, when I lived in Mexico, whereas I live in Spain now).
I'm not sure Sony has 1-year warranties but I'm betting it doesn't, or you wouldn't be asking me this as the model doesn't have a year yet..:)

This has been reported on the forums several times, one case was mine. No one has reported a software or firmware fix for this exact problem. It seems its a hardware failure. Mine required that the main logic board be replaced.
There have been reports of similar sounding but different failures (despite the claim of the poster that "I have the same problem") that were the result of configuration errors. In thesse cases there was an error message. When the UX hangs on "Initializing ..." and clicking Cancel either does nothing or results in a hang on "Canceling ..." you have the hardware failure.

I hate to say it, but like I mentioned in another thread which you mentioned the same problem, I do believe that it is a hardware failure....
The symtoms you describe are well documented....according to DWIG in another post;
"There have been several reported problems, all different, that fit the limited details in "unregistered's" post. Most are the result of a configuration problem and one is the result of a hardware failure in the UX50.
If the "hang" occurs with a message box on screen that is labeled "Initializing ..." and the green WiFi light blinks on and off _forever_ then you almost certainly have a hardware failure that can only be fixed by replacing the main motherboard in the UX.
If the UX responds with any other message then you may just have a configuration problem. These could involve"
1. scrambled "wits" in the UX which a reset (try a hard reset if soft reset won't fails to fix it) may fix.
2. incorrect WiFi settings in the UX.
3. altered or incompatable settings on the Access Point.
4. altered settings on the host PC that block the communication port used by HotSync (turning on XP's personal firewall will almost certainly shut out HotSync from the network). Simply applying a MS security patch can seal off the port used by network HotSync."

Eskasi: I do believe you. But I'm sure the thing is not under warranty and they'll want to charge me 200 euros or more whatever it has..:( I'm just going to either deal with it and pay or forget about the only reason I bought the UX50 vs the UX40.

Hmmm....where do you use your UX most often? I know it isn't much of a fix, but how about getting a BT router if you use your UX mainly at home? I have heard that the range is about 100m which is better than WiFi.....of course, that won't help with hotspots...but at least you can still use GPRS while you are on the move.....till you manage to get the time to get your UX fixed, or...uh...till the new model UX comes out ;)

No wifi anymore. Doesn't detect wireless networks or give me a wireless connection.
Called support and waiting for a box to send it to the repair center. I'll update you guys on what happens if anyone wants to know.

I know how to fix your problem. It is a large explonation, so email me at ieli@mac.com.
-Eli S.
Elispect: You can post it here. People would thank it. Or you can send me the explanation at eduo@mac.com and I'll post it here.

Ummm, I know this'll sound strange if you don't know Elispect, but don't trust him.
I don't know what his motives are, or if he's just lonely, but trust me, nothing Elispect can say will be helpful.
Big Raji: Why? Only with 17 posts? What did he do? I didn't send him an e-mail, but replied here with my (already public) e-mail.

Long story. He seems to have mellowed out quite a bit lately.
Basically, he was spreading alot of stories/lies... the kind of thing a child might do to get attention.
Unfortunately, it brought ALOT of heat down on him, as usually tends to happen in these types of forums. :)
Regardless, don't put too much faith in what he says. I'm not saying flame and trash him every chance you get, but just take what he says with a grain of salt...
is that how the saying goes? Maybe make it a bag or two...

What was the answer to possibly fixing the Wifi? I am considering buying one with busted Wifi. I would buy it for sure if I could fix it, otherwise I might anyways since it is essentially a UX40...
Thanks,
Steve
Madmax (got your email). There hasn't been any response. I haven't found a place in Madrid where I can take my busted UX50 to fix..:(
