Out of curiosity, what's the difference between the WL100 and the WL110? Is it a different size or something?

The WL100 is made by Intel (even though it says SOny) it can be used in a laptop or w/e. THe 110 is made by Sony, it is supposed to be faster I think and will not work in a laptopp.

Nah..both are same size...would have to be to fit in my CF slot. Some here seem to prefer one to the other. I believe the 110 is the newer model though. Both will connect you to 802.11b so I am on the lookout for whichever one I can find cheapest.
Both are functionally equivalent. THe 110 has proprietary technology, so it won't work in a laptop CF slot.

you should definitly buy the wl100. i was reading a previous post and i cant remember which one it was but is said the distance you can travel away from your network access point or router (which ever one is for WiFi) is twice the distance with the 100 than the 110. i dont know why the 110 has a shorter distance it does.

Really?
I can go around a city block with my WL110. I can't even go down to the mailbox with my laptop and thats a good 60ft from my access point.

Hello everyone. I just got myvery first PDA - a nx80 (if I haven't said this enough.. I love it!). So which wifi card to go for? Is there any difference in the transfer rate?
From what I've gathered so far, WL100 is the older version, is compatible with laptops, and has a range of 90m. The WL110 on the other hand is the newer model, is not compatible with laptops, and has a shorter range of 60m.
It was said above that the 110 is faster, however, the next post did say they connect the same... can someone please verify if these two have the same speed?
So far the WL100 seems the better of the two. I just wanna make sure before I plunk down more money into this super sweet machine.
Thanks in advance and sorry if this has been asked before (searched but could not find a definitive answer).

As far as I can tell the WL-100 is much better than the WL-110. Here are some specs...
Power Consumption:
WL-110
Idle-200mW
Transmitting-940mW
WL-100
Idle-90mW
Transmitting-560 to 920mW
WL-100 wins.
Range:
WL-110
Indoor-200ft(60m)
Outdoor-500ft(150m)
WL-100
Indoor-300ft(90m)
outdoor-1,000ft(300m)
Once again, the WL-100 wins.
WL-100 averages 523mW, the WL-110 averages 570mW.
WL-100 averages 650ft(195m), the WL-110 averages 350ft(105m). The power consumption on the 100 is less and the range is almost doubled compared to the 110. I've just convinced myself to buy the WL-100.:D It's also laptop compatible. If anyone has anything to add to this(software capabilities maybe), please feel free to post.

Where are these specs from? The WL100 sounds awesome!

Just go to the "Specifications" part of the PDF.
For the WL-110:
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/PEGAWL110.PDF
For the WL-100: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/PEGAWL100.PDF
I just averaged out the specs, these are what it said in the pdf...
WL-100 Power:
Idle-90mW Transmitting-560 to 920mW
WL-110 Power:
Idle-200mW Transmitting-940mW
WL-100 Range:
Indoor-300ft(90m) Outdoor-1000ft(300m)
WL-110 Range:
Indoor-200ft(60m)
Outdoor-500ft(150m)
The PDF's said that all these numbers are approximate. My numbers in the previous post are approximate averages. Either way, the WL-100 still wins.

It sure does mark! If I want one (haven't decided yet) I'd better jump on it because I find it harder and harder to find a WL100 around now. I can find the 110 all over the place.

It's so typical of Sony to pull this crap. I can understand them wanting to build their own CF card, but to make it proprietary to the point where you can't use it with ANY other device is just plain wrong.
I have a WL100 - not because I cared either way, but because I bought my NX80 used, as a package deal (CF card, WiFi card and case). Still, after the fact I'm thankful that I ended up with the WL100 since I also use it with my PPC as well as my laptop (thru a CF card adapter). And, if I ever decide to sell it, my "public" is considerably larger.
As for the increased range and better power usage, I wouldn't know since I don't have a WL110 to compare it with. That said, I do get excellent battery life when using it. Surfing and listening to mp3s barely strains my NX80 (of course, the screen is set to 50%).

I KNOW acraniotes! That's what boils my blood most...they put a CF card shot in there so we could have WiFi...then realizing we just might be able to stick a MUCH CHEAPER memory format in there they INTENTIONALLY LOCKED IT OUT TO ANYTHING BUT THEIR CARD! I am still shocked that more people aren't ticked off by this.
It's just MEAN SPIRITED! That's all.

What is your average battery life when surfing with wifi and mp3's? I keep my screen at 0% or at whatever the lowest setting is, I don't need it any higher, the screen is bright enough already!

Don't even get me started on the crippled CF slot. Thanks to Peleca, I have been able to wrest control of the thing back from Sony, but I shouldn't have been forced to take that route. It should have worked fine right out of the box. Even if the CF slot were entirely functional, I still would have bought a MemoryStick simply because I'd be afraid of damaging the CF slot by leaving it open all of the time. Also, since I use WiFi a lot, it's nice to have a seperate storage medium built-in so I don't have to lose my music, files, and apps just because I happen to be online.
The WL110 is an insult, plain and simple.

MarkVI, to be honest, I have no idea. All I know is that it's a non-issue for me. If I want to sit and listen to music while I'm online, I can do so for as long as I want and not have to worry about whether or not I'm going to kill the battery. It's a nice feeling.

"The WL110 is an insult, plain and simple."
Wow. I have never heard it put so succinctly & quite honestly,...brutally true. It's like Sony cut off your arm. Then realizing you had limited functionality, offered to sell you your arm back..

Fry's Electronics has the WL100 card for $129.90. That's an OK price, but does anyone know where I can get it cheaper and not from eBay? I want to get it for under a $100. Thanks!

eBay is probably your best bet. I got a new, unopened one for $75.

I got the Wl-110 from Best Buy for $90 (I had a 10% off coupon). Ended up returning it after considering the posts in cliesource. Am now in the hunt for a reasonably-priced (and hopefully) brand new Wl-100.

I picked up the WL100 at Compusa last night for $129.88 along with a 512MB CF card for $120 (minus $20 mail-in rebate - so ultimately, only $100).
