Hi,
I hope it's OK to promote my own written software in here, anyway, these are all "freeware", so I'm getting nothing of it - just the nice thought that I might have helped somebody out there! :)

these are 3 simple yet brilliant DAs whoose function is well described in their respective page under PalmGear:

AutoOffDAs: http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodid=53864
BacklightDAs: http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodid=53863
BrightnessDAs: http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodid=53672

Enjoy.

I'm not really clear on the whole DA thing. I use to have a Palm IIIc this and I used X-Master and a few hacks over the years but when I moved to my N760C, I tried to break the habit and I managed to go without any hacks until I had to reinstall X-Master to use MSDict. Anyway, I know what Hacks are but I haven't a clue about DAs. Are they the same thing but for OS 5 devices? Is there a FAQ I can read about this? I would appreciate any information anyone has.

DA = Desk Accessories

They are not hacks, so event manager/hack managers will not see them. You need something like apphack to see them.
Do a search on this forum and look at the files section. Also Palmgear or Handango has a section for DAs.

have a look at DA Launcher (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodID=8584) For a good freeware launcher.

A quote about what a DA is
Only one application can run at the same time on Palm OS (the OS of Pilot, PalmPilot, Palm III, Work Pad and compatibles). This single task feature is not so bad for users, since applications launch quite fast and they, if well designed, remember their last state.

But haven't you ever felt bothered when you must quit application to see Graffiti Help and resume it? It's same when you want to see today's date.

As for developer's side, some programmers want to develop applications that handle other application's data, but ordinary application can't do that. So they must make it as a HACK. But HACK damages speed and stability even when it's not used, only installed.

Are there any solutions to solve such problems ?

Yes, here is!

Desk Accessory(DA) is one of the best solutions. It's a small application for such utilities. DA is the new type of application proposed by YAMADA Tatsushi, Hacker Dude-san. DA works on Palm Computing Platform.

DA is the special application like HACK, but not HACK. DA is invoked from the special launcher as DA Launcher, QuickLauncher or other launcher that can launch DA. So you must have installed special launcher for Desk Accessory prior to any DA installation. DA can run over the current application. So you don't have to quit the application to run DA. When DA quits, the application still continues to run.

DA is the special application, so programmers must develop applications as DA, not as ordinary application. Hacker Dude-san is planning to release the documents for rules and samples to develop DA.

More info and buckets of DAs can be found here (http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/h-yama/da/)

Enjoy:)

I`ve heard but not sure, that Zlauncher can run DA`s as well. (I`ve never had any probs with DA Launcher though:) )

The BrightnessDAs are excellent. It really is such a simple solution to what is a simple (but occasionally frustrating) problem. While the author only tested them on the SJ22s, I don't see how it would pose as a problem on other devices.

Hi !
First, it was me who started the thread. For some reason, it didn't log me in that time apparently... :)

Anyway, I would like to thank you for all the feedback - it really does make me happy to know that my software helps you !

I'm providing it for free mainly because it's my first, very simple programs, and I made them for fun & learning - I used the freeware on-board Pascal Compiler. Please see its link on my pages on PalmGear. If you d/l my DAs, you also get the full source code, so I hope more people can learn and make nice stuff with this excellent compiler! :)

Also on the ZIP files of mine are links to "what is DA" and "what is a Hack" internet pages that I found very helpful.
On the PP (Palm Pascal) site there was a note from a user that my BrightnessDAs also work on OS5 - I'm glad to hear that, you are all welcome to try too! If for some reason my DAs don't work for you, try to describe why (what it DOES seem to do, if at all) and your configuration (device, OS, active programs, etc...) - I can't promise anything, but I will do my best to learn more and fix something if needed.

Thank you very much again,
- Yuval.
