I have been pestering my local Future Shop about availability since the TH55 story originally broke. I did so again, and the news is mixed. The good part is that TH55, TJ37, and TJ27 are all in the computer!

The bad news is the prices:

TH55 C$599.99
TJ37 C$449.99
TJ27 C$299.99

Ouch!

The salesperson who was very nice says that they are expecting new Clies by end of Feb or early March.

Cheers

Pavneet,

Thanks for the news. As far as the TH55 price I actually feared worse than that.

Wondering what Sony Canada will do with the NX73V. That's the one pegged at $599 now and they usually like to price-differentiate the models in the line-up. I can't imagine they'll yank it, because without the NX80V it's currently the only clam-shell.

I do as well. When the CompUSA U$220 special was on I walked into Best Buy at Sherway Gardens, where in the past I have found very knowledgeable staff and spent half-an-hour with the manager talking shop and logged on to the CompUSA website. He was flabbergasted at the pricing and told me that the only way they were doing it is because Sony had given them a honey deal to push the remaining stock; he had come up form Best Buy USA. He, unfortunatley, couldn't price match across the border even though it was Best Buy  .

Sony Canada is determined to keep the prices high and neither Future Shop nor Best Buy are inclined to undercut SonyStyle.ca. Heck today I saw and *NR*70 at Staples for C$329 and I know that Best Buy has some for C$299.

Personally, I am hoping that the TG50 keeps inching downward into my price range although it isn't happening nearly quick enough, and the managers tell me that it is still moving briskly at C$349.

Cheers.

For $30 more than what the TH55 is you can get a UX50...Seems to me that UX50 offers a bit more, no???

That $599 is in Canadian currency.

The prices speak for themselves. Overpriced. Disappointed.

This just occurred to me; why it had to happen at 3:00 in the morning, I don't know ;) .

These prices match *exactly* with the current Canadian prices for the T3, T2, and the TE! This strikes me as Sony playing follow the leader which isn't normally what I would expect from Sony.

As George Clooney's character remarked in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, "Ain't this place a geographically oddity?"

Cheers.

The prices speak for themselves. Overpriced. Disappointed. I'm aware that the $599 is in Canadian...The $30 difference I spoke of was after converting to US Dollars and finding UX50 at a discount price.

That is if I import it from the USA?

Here in Canada, the UX50 is very expensive: $999 + tax or $751.64 USD.

A few months ago I was considering getting a TG50 (decided to wait for a 320x480 tablet Clie, TH55 here I come!) and I priced it out in Toronto and was amazed at the price difference with the U.S. It was far more than the difference in the value of the currencies and the problem was compounded when I found a few web coupons that could be used at Amazon. In the end, I could have got a TG50 for only $200 U.S. and the best price in Canada was DOUBLE that.

I hate to say it but my next Clie is coming from south of the border unless Sony Canada smartens up.

I forgot to mention something. A friend of mine was buying a Tungsten T3 recently and he shopped around and found it for $459.95 at a place called Grey-Tech (http://greytech.com/) but then he remembered that Staples/Business Depot does price matching so he took a Grey-Tech advertisement to S/BD and they matched the price and knocked a further 10% off (I think I've got that right). Still not as good as ordering from the U.S. (provided you don't declare the purchase and pay the tax) but it is still a heck of a lot better than the MSRP.

I called Grey-Tech and asked if they carried Clies. They don't. I asked if they would consider it or do a special order and the salesguy said he would have to have a manager call me back. I probably won't hear back but it was worth a shot.

My thanks also for the info. re: Canadian availability. I too expected to pay $500 to $600 CDN for a TH-55 so I'm not disappointed ... too much.

Datavision has the TH55 for $394 US.

Even with a price difference, i'm going to wait and see what price this is going to be in the UK and get my brother to ship me one. I couldn't stand to shell out C$599 at the moment...

all the new Clie's are now on Sonystyle.ca with the free Doc-to-go. I've ordered the TH and it says Feb29 expected date.

Alrighty then. The TH55 is $399 US or $599 CDN.

Doing straight currency conversion we should get $528 CDN.

So why are we getting dinged for an extra $72? This pricing policy extends across almost the entire Sony lineup. (And then we pay taxes on the extra $72 which makes it worse).

I just got back from vacation in Florida and was pleased to see that not all companies that exists in both US and Canada have such annoying pricing. My visit to Costco in the States showed me that they are charging, almost to the penny, the same value in both countries. Yay Costco! Boo Sony!

But the sad part of it is that I will probably continue to buying Clies as my PDA of choice. Current one is an NX70 and will be waiting until stable OS 6 devices hit the market. But who knows? Maybe Palm will also have an enticing unit out as well (the T3 is close) by then.

And still no adjustment in pricing to the existing line up...

Don't get me going about Sony Canada. They have a good scam going. Sony Style US will not ship to Canada and neither will most other online retailers.

I bit the bullet and ordered from ecost.com. Borderfree (or Ecost, whichever) slaps on C$30 s/h but the total with pst/gst was $547 which is still about 20% lower than buying from SC, for me here in Toronto.

Yes, but as I mentioned in another post, Ecost.com will! (It's how I got my T-665 a few years ago).

TH55 is listed at $399US with a 'shopping cart special' - makes it $329US. They use borderfree, which converts and adds GST/PST, and my total, shipped, was $545! including taxes! It'll ship in late Feb or early Mar.

This'll be the second time I've managed to get a fair price (versus Sony's inflated cross-border pricing)

I used to live in Vancouver BC. Everytime I come back to visit my parents, I'm always amazed on how expensive things are in Canada! And don't get me started on the PST/GST!

Oogabooga,

Actually, thanks for the initial heads-up. :)

I had checked ecost.com but missed the 'special' link. Double-checked and found it after you posted the US$329 price in that news thread!

I think Future Shop in Canada has a tie-up arrangement with BestBuy. That's the impression I got when I queried BestBuy on their business in Canada.

I think that Future Shop and Best Buy are owned by the same parent company. That's probably how they'll have agreements between them
