View Full Version : Plastic Flip cover getting scratched??

I was just wondering how durable the plastic clear flip cover on the TH is. Would it be prone to getting scratches all over the place?

Any SJ33 owners want to chime in on this?

I know on my old TG50 I bought that half clear flip cover for it. Within a week it had scratches ALL over it. Sure the scratches were faint, but it just bugged me, you know? My UX50 doesn't have a single scratch on it, the case is quite durable, and i've had it for several months already.

I have an SJ33 and my flip-cover is very scratched. I'm trying to find a solution that will remove scratches and / or prevent them from reappearing. Mabye that liquid lens stuff will work. On my SJ33, some of the scratches are so deep that the metallic paint is all the way removed. The TH flip cover is so nice, it would be a shame if it scratched easily.

My plan is to remove the cover and save it for future resale. I've used my N760C w/o cover, only use screen protector for 2.5 years.

For those who want to keep the plastic cover on it, can you put screen protector on that plastic cover, I wonder?

That looks like a plastic sheet cover the flip cover to me. Like you usually see on a brand new device.

whoa a scratched cover will totally ruin the beauty of this baby.

That's why I decided not to go for the TH, since I won't be able to stand the cover having all kinds of hairline scratches over it -- and admit it, no matter how careful you are, it will get fine scratches sooner or later.

And I'll probably just end up like someone has mentioned -- take off the cover and save for future resale. But then I keep asking myself -- why the heck am I paying so much $$ for something that I can't enjoy but rather save for the NEXT owner?! It makes very little sense to me.

And we all know the whole point of having a PDA is to use it, not to lock it up behind a glass cabinet at home and admire its sheer beauty. Sometimes I just don't understand what Sony is thinking these days.

Since the plastic cover can be easily screwed on. Just make a bunch of these covers from a thinner sheet of plastic and replace it whenever the sheet gets badly scratch, may be once every 2-3 months. Then you will have overall thickness closer to 1/2" with the cover.

Maybe if we are lucky some smart third party company will come out with a decent replacement flip cover for a decent price. Maybe even some designer plastic flip covers like a smoke gray colored one to match the black (think old iPaq flip cover) TH55. I'd hate to see any new PDA I get end up looking like my poor unfortunate TG50.

I got my SJ-33 as soon as they were in stores.  I carry it with me everwhere.  And I can't find any scratches on the cover.  BUT I use a soft case to protect it when it's not being used.

I noticed the TH-55's cover described as "5-H Hard acrylic".  Does anyone know if that's the same material they use on the covers for the SJ-33?

Personally I don't much care about a transparent cover, I would look for a leather cover for it. I'm sure some will be out very soon.

Like yOyOyoo, I had the flip cover for my old tg50 and it was extremely scratched within a week. Even if you are very careful, it will get scratched. Since it is a clear cover, the scratches will be very bothersome to most because it will be difficult to see through it. The only way that I would like a cover would be if someone made one that flipped all the way around. The metal flip cover on the tg50 looks nice with the unit closed, but it doesn't look so good with it open. Also, it is not the prettiest sight when you remove the cover. Maybe someone will design plugs that can be put in the gaps once the cover is removed? A magnetic closure case by Sena would look nice with this handheld after removing the cover.

For me, I have the NX80 and am quite satisfied. The tg50 was a very good pda, but I really like the larger screen. If this had a keyboard (I know, it would have to be either very long or have a flip keyboard like some cell phones) I would consider it.

Why don't you guys just develop a screen cover for the plastic cover too :p

I luckily know a few people who work with paint/plastic/metal etc and when I got my SJ33 I had them coat the case/cover in a transparent enamel to prevent scratches. It's worked very well thus far with very minimal scratching - if any. I plan to do the same to at least the cover when I get my TH55.

I think some might not wanna use the cover, if there is leather casing coming out for the TH

i think the whole cover idea is a waste
sony should have excluded the cover
many PDA's look good w/o that TT3 for that example.

as t1000x pointed out the third party thing, it can be possible a.k.a. all the NOKIA mobile phones

Well the whole point of that cover is due to the design of the TH55 - It's designed so you can use it *with* the cover closed!!

But frankly even 'transparent aluminium' wouldn't be scratch resistant enough to never get any scratches...

I like the 'cover cover' idea :D

Hmmmm...seems to me that Sony would get a lot more marketing success if they would just consult this board and see what people prefer before putting such a sweet unit with such a hokey front cover. I, too, am TOTALLY anal about scratches - I can't even stand them on my screen protector so I go through those like crazy. I might just wait on the TH55 to see what third party accessories come out.

ROFL if they did consult this board it'd be chaos! :D

"Camera SUXX0RZ!"

"No, in fact the camera can be quite useful!"

"ur l4m3r!"

"I say junk teh camera and whack in 64MB RAM!"

"What about the jog-dial? What spaz decided it to put it there?!"

"No man that position is GENIOUS!"

"Are you retarded?!"

"Screw you!"

"Yr 4ll l4m3rz!"

"SHUTUP!"

hehehe

I think a mineral crystal cover should warrant for this gem.

Don't even joke. Sony might listen and implement a 1337 launguage option. Or make diamond cover standard and charge thousands.

Sony HK said cover replacements are on their way for sale soon.

What is 1337?

1337 or LEET

Something akin to geek speak, netspeak... # -> letters or 733t3r5

The cover is replaceable, so more than likely, some company will come out with scratch resistant cover. The one on the TG series are rather nice. Maybe they'll make one similiar to that.

I'm not sure how I am going to like the flip-lid sticking up in the same manner as my old Palm IIIxe. I really like flipping the cover all the way around to the back.

I really don't think I am going to like that cover. I really wish I knew if there was something included to plug up the hinges. Does anybody know?

finally got mine and this is what i did to protect my protector(?)...

searched hardware stores, container shops, alot of PDA sites....
trying to find the right bumper/protector for fine objects.

felt pads, silicone bumpers, and plastic slides. all their profiles were to big.. i was finding....nothing.

then i was in my local drug store, and i noticed silicone pads for eyeglasses!! super thin. kind of sticky so it doesn't slide off of things easily, and kind of see through!

best deal, $2.49 for a set of 4.

i trimmed them a bit so they are circles and placed them on the corners on the screen and they've been on for two and a half weeks now. still there and no scratchies!!

Forget the flip cover and just plug the holes like this:

Nice!

I use a Bellagio Designs cover on my SJ33, and I look forward to seeing what they come out with for the TH55!

My TH55 cover is already all scratched up. I don't really care, however, it's a cover, and so it's supposed to protect the screen, not look nice. Like LanMan, I wish that the cover flipped all the way around like my old Palm III. IMHO that's a far more useful design than a transparent cover.

I've kept the clear plastic thing on my cover because it doesn't look too bad and I'd like to keep it unscratched for as long as possible. I've got hinge plugs on order from Brando, and I'm considering going completely coverless with just a screen protector. Not sure how I feel about that. But for now the protective covering on the cover looks unscratched after 2 weeks of use.
