Just wanted to know if there was a setting that disables the Clie SJ-30 from turning on when any of the buttons are pressed. Problem my wife is having is that the case she's using is inadvertently pressing the buttons when in her pocketbook and in just a few hours time her battery is very low.

thanks

There are plenty of pieces of software which will do this. I use one called StayOff from www.rgps.com. It will let you choose which buttons to enable or disable, and also lets you define a 'wake' button which will override the switch-off.

BTW, it's worth noting that these tools don't actually stop the power on (I presume they can't!) - what they do instead is to switch the Clie off as soon as it switches on, so you get a brief flash of screen then it turns off again.

[OT for UK readers, it always reminds me of the scene in Red Dwarf where Holly has switched herself off to save runtime - Rimmer keeps shouting 'On' to switch her on and she shouts 'Off' to switch off again.]

I wonder if it the screens takes damage after a time of frequently switching it on and off. If you have your pda in your pocket and go for a walk for example, let's say every ten seconds a button is pressed, so the screen is switched on and off 6 times per minute, 90 times in 15 minutes...

You would have thought Sony would be smart enough to include a built-in features that "disables" auto-on from pressing the buttons accidentally. -Sigh-. Guess I'll have to start looking at software solutions.

Stinks.

This isn't just for the UK readers. We Yanks who were willing to stay up really late used to get Read Dwarf on a PBS station!

(Sorry to go off topic, but I know I am not the only one who used to watch RD).

[OT] I love RD too. I have all 8 seasons of episode and scripts on CDR and I even converted an episode of it to watch on my clie.

Funny, but it appears that Sony designed the concave buttons for that very purpose, to prevent accidental turn-ons. I carried my SJ20 in my pocket for a month with only the original flip-cover. I never had a problem of it getting accidentally turned on.

Perhaps your wife could place her CLIE in an outside "cell phone" pocket of her purse. Like a woman needs a reason to buy another purse... but maybe she could get one with more room or a separate place for her SJ30. I would think if it is smashed in there so tight that it is getting turned on, it is probably getting all scratched up too.

Perhaps it is sending out a feeble cry for help... (oh boy, that's really reaching).

Just my $.02
