Despondent

Ok, I've read all the threads I can find on this problem and almost everyone seems to solve the problem by removing or draining the battery. I've done that (along with every possible reset in the book) and still no response to ANYTHING. Damn. I was hoping I'd found a solution.....
My NR-70 was working fine and had plenty of charge. Then when I took it out one evening it was dead and unresponsive.
First up, the hold button is definitely not on.
Pressing the power button does nothing - no screen and no power light. Inserting a MS does not cause the MS light to come on. Soft, warm and hard resets do nothing as well. I tried leaving it on the charger overnight and this changed nothing. No lights come on when it is in the cradle and it does not hotsync either. The headphone remote cannot generate any response either.
Finally I took the back off and removed the battery connecting cable. Having left it off for more than an hour I replaced that and tried all of the above again. Still nothing.
Is there anything else I can try? I'm about to resort to Sony service but am out of warranty so am concerned that I'm going to cop a hefty bill in doing so.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated
