I'm sure plenty of you are waiting with bated breath for the TG50, with Bluetooth and an integrated keyboard. The first word on it surfaced a few weeks ago but details were sketchy. Well, the FCC has released some more info on this device. Read everything I know about it at
www.brighthand.com/article/Additional_Info_on_Sony_TG50
This includes why I think it runs Palm OS 5.

In this thread http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3972 a link to a .pdf shows a portion of the Manual and some of the "screen shots/drawings" show the OS5 launcher. :)

One thing you got backwards in your writeup. The TG50 manual states that you must hold down the Home/Menu button for a couple seconds to return to the applications launcher. I think this means that you would only need to tap the button quickly to pull down the Menu. You have this written backwards in your writeup.
It's not a big deal, but I just wanted to bring it up. Great story though. I always keep a clip of Brighthand in Handstory.. I love your site.

I think it's you who has it backwards. Look at the bottom of page 21 in the user manual, under "Using the Jog Dial navigator":
Tip: The Menu screen is displayed when you press and hold the Home/Menu button.
On what page does it say you have to hold down the button to get the launcher?

Man, I can't get over the asthetic design of the TG50. From what I've seen it appears to be the same thickness of a T665C (including cover), and maybe a quarter of an inch or more taller. If it is the same exact size of a T665C then that means it could use some of the same exact cases. I love the idea of a keyboard because I've never been a big fan of Graffiti. It will make the device more user friendly, and I'm surprised that Sony hasn't thought of making a low-end model (SL10 like) that has no Graffiti area and a keyboard.
Think of the sales figures if Sony released a low-end model with a white backlight, 16MB of RAM and a keyboard to compete with Palm's Zire model at the same price. I would pick one up for a few family members, because they tried Graffiti on my Clie and did not care for it. With a keyboard it would make data entry so much easier for new users, and it would also help Sony get past the Xerox suit as well.

Actually, it seems to be thinner than the 665.

You're right. My foot is totally in my mouth on this one. I'm sorry about that. I think I need more sleep.
In that case... perfect write up! I'll try and keep my foot on the ground where it belongs from now on. Thanks Ed.

I've seen some posts in other threads that referred to the TG50's removable battery. I don't think the TG50 has one of these. The instructions in the manual related to taking out the battery are in the section about recycling the battery. Looks very much to me like they are to help you take out the battery before disposing of the handheld. Notice the instructions require you to use tools to get it out.

I've noticed this misconception as well. I've tried to bring it to attention, but I guess if people really want something they are going to see it anyways. :(
The steps in the TG50 are exactly the same as the steps in the manuals for the NR and NX series handhelds.

Also, looks like the flipcover is removable.

Why didnt they just make the screen on the NR series on the T665 and add a virtual writing area. That would have been perfect.

From your info on the site, and others I have read (like PIC) the TG50 appears to be the same exact dimensions as the T665C! That means some of the Sony cases will work just fine with it. So, my Mom's T415 case that came with it when I bought it for her would probably work with my TG50 when I get it. Of course being the loving son, she would get my current SJ30.
As for some complaining it has no graffiti area, I couldn't be more pleased. Despite since using Graffiti since 1999 when I got my Visor Deluxe I hate it. It is cumbersome and it has honestly screwed my penmanship up. The thumboard will have some drawbacks but it is an awesome inclusion, and I can't wait to pick one up. It will also make the Sony TG50 an appealing device for Mobile professionals, especially those who are Blackberry users like has already been stated. And, I think Sony may actually come out with a low-end model to replace the SL10 with a thumboard built-in and the SJ20's screen. It's just a thought.
