View Full Version : Upgrading from NX70 to NX80

I just got an NX80V to replace my NX70V. I couldn't resist Comp-u-Plus's deal.
I'm wondering about the upgrade procedure:
Should I uninstall the Clie desktop and reinstall the new one? Does that then mean that I must reinstall all my software that uses a conduit too? (I'm thinking yes to these questions, but perhaps I am wrong)
I'm thinking of this strategy:
1-Hotsync the 70.
2-Backup to the 70 to a MS.
3-Copy the entire user folder from c:\program files\sony handheld to a backup folder (c:\backup-clie).
4-uninstall the clie desktop
5-install the new 80 desktop and files.
6-reinstall BackupBuddy.
7-copy the user folder back into the Sony Handheld folder.
8-review the contents of the user folder and remove anything potentially harmful (i.e., stuff that's not a known prc file or a pdb file that I can recognize to be associated with a program that I had on my 70)
9-hotsync the 80, but make sure everything says "desktop overwrites handheld"
10-reinstall all programs that use a conduit.
11-hotsync some more
12-test all programs to make sure everything works OK on the 80.
13-Use jackflash to access the extra RAM and move my favorite programs up there.
Or perhaps all I have to do is unplug the 70 cradle, plug in the 80 cradle and press hotsync?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

You don't even have to do that. Just take your NX70 off the cradle, then put the NX80 on the cradle and press hotsync button.

In wandering through the Cliesource forums, I found this which was, I believe, posted by Larry:
When I upgraded from the NX70 to the NX80, I followed these 10 steps.
Removed all upgrades and add-on drivers that would clash with NX80, from the NX70. Additionally, if JackFlash was used, all files went back into RAM first! (of course I had backed up the NX70 too)
Then I copied the C:\ Program Files\Sony Handheld\my HotSync named folder\backup on my desktop to a safe out of the way location on the hard drive.
Then I emptied the same backup folder under my HotSync name. Then I backed up the NX70 again with MS Backup minus said updates and drivers.
I set all the conduits on the desktop PC to handheld overwrites desktop.
I HotSync'd the NX70 so it would be free of any Sony upgrades or drivers on in the desktop PC, including EruWare's CF driver.
I made sure that all the files on the desktop PC and the MS Backup on the memory stick were the same, plus equal number of files!
Changed conduits again so that desktop overwrites handheld.
HotSync'd the new NX80
Did a soft reset and all was well, except that Energy Dimmer isn't compatible with the NX80, so it was deleted, no lockups though!
Tip: Even though MS Backup won't recognize the backup from another Clie, you can always use ClieFiles or similar to just copy them to RAM.

Loraneb I'm following in your footsteps. I just placed my order for the NX80 and have the same question as you. I've spent so much time setting up my NX70V that I'm afraid it will take me hours and hours to get the new NX80 changed over. I use Jack Flash and probably don't have enough RAM to move everything out but I will follow this thread closely for more comments/advice or your experience. Now that I've actually made the decision and placed the order I've very excited!!!

Yes, I even drove to the FedEx office to pick it up since I didn't want to wait until the next day for FedEx to redeliver it!
I was waiting to get an OS 6 unit with the same features as the 70/80, but I got itchy fingers and decided to upgrade to an 80 for a reasonable price now and then wait a bit longer to upgrade to an OS 6 unit. They usually have problems with the first units anyway. So hopefully in a year from now they will be out and stable.

Bought one of the cheap NX80s to replace my NX60. Not a big upgrade, but having the camera could be usefull and the keyboard will be better. I was going to wait, but I really don't like the direction Sony is going with their handhelds, so I decided to get the NX80. The new jog dials, sony handheld engine, and the disapearance of the remote commander software, remote control unit, and probably the CF slot really bug me. The NX80 is everything I want right now and the price is very cheap.

Plus, the '80's WAY lighter than my beloved '60.
I've been trying to talk m'wife into taking over my 60 so I can get an '80.. since she discovered Bejeweled I've been cringing over her monopolization of Fred. Everychance I get, now, I drop, "you coulda done that easier/quicker/whateverer with Fred..."
Just hope the supply of '80s holds out 'til I wear her down!

Lorane: I upgraded and migrated my data from an NX60 to the NX73, which is about the same thing. All I did was:
1) Backup the old NX60 data on to Mem Stick just in case.
2) Backed up the directory in ProgramFiles/SonyHandheld/"the name of your profile" by making a copy to another directory.
3) Renamed the "Backup" directory located in the directory you just made a copy of, to "oldbackup" so that it did not automatically load incompatible files. (made the mistake of not doing this first time and it was a disaster and had to hard reset)
4) Put the "virgin" NX73 in the cradle (the cradles should be exactly the same) and pressed the hotsync.
5) when it asks, select the hotsync name for the old CLIE. It will transfer all of you PIM data to the new CLIE
6) then I just added the third party software one at a time. I used the opportunity to go ahead and load the latest versions of all my third party software.
This approach was suggested by the Sony techs and some of my third party software support folks.
Good Luck

$288??!!! Man, at that price, I'm gonna just go ahead and buy and keep it 'til Fred expires! Or, until my wife decides she wants her own afterall..
That's through CompUSA online or in a store?

Now it's time to tell the wife................

I don't even think that I'm going to tell my husband. He has a Kyo 7135 and never touches my Clie. I'm going to sell my 70 on Ebay for whatever I can get for it and so it won't really cost me too much to get this 80.
Of course, if he does notice, I'll tell him what I did. He's awfully good about my technogadgets, though!

So, how much more do you like the 80 over your 70? I just bought a 73 and like is a LOT... I'm thinking about picking up an 80 and selling it online. But I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble. Let me know!

I went with a somewhat conservative approach on my conversion and have been reinstalling/checking my apps to make sure everything is OK. I do like the extra RAM that I have and I haven't even gotten to JackFlash! The screen, of course, is beautiful. I ordered a screen protector from overlayplus.com. I haven't taken a picture yet, but I assume since it is about 4 times the res that the 70 had, it will be beautiful. I have a pizza party for my son's basketball team tonight so I might try it out!
Right now, I'm making a list of all my apps that use registration codes and writing down the registration codes and then I will make a Handyshopper list or memo or something freeware to keep them on the Clie so if something happens, I will have the registration codes with me.
I do wish they had given us a dedicated row of numbers, though, with the keyboard.
Has anyone tried Decuma? How is that?

loraneb, you got your NX80 from CompuPlus, right? I'm glad to hear it arrived. I ordered mine 1/28 and haven't got word that it's shipped, although order processed and charged through. Can you tell I'm anxious now that I've decided?
Thanks for the update on your conversion. Hopefully if I follow your progress it'll make my transition easier. I am concerned about getting those registration codes transfered along with my programs and some were installed so long ago I may have trouble finding them lost in my downloads since then! I do love my NX70V and although I look forward to some of the new features in the NX80 I am already dreading the security of my fine-tuned Clie! I better get all other work done now as I'm sure this will distract me for days (not hours).
Keep me updated.

Yes, I bought it from Compuplus on Sunday 1-25. They shipped it Monday the 26th and I got it on Wed. the 28th. If you have your order number, I think you can track the progress of your order.

I haven't had Decuma crash on me but I don't use it much. I only use it for the accentuated characters when I write in spanish and switch back to G1 for the rest.

LOL all I did was move all my SJ33 Palm Desktop/Sony Handheld or whatever to a different folder(via drag and drop) and then install the new stuff for my NX80...worked like a dream and now I'm in NX heaven :D

CompuPlus is where I ordered it -- they won't ship it 'til Monday (tomorrow) but I hope to have it soon -- their default shipping is 2nd day, which adds to the price but it's still so low's to be well worth it.
As for telling my wife -- she was next to me in the office during the back and forth (above) and when I placed the order she swiveled the chair and gave me the ol' hairy eyeball.. but I just pointed to the price and said, "at that price, it's practically FREE!" Which didn' gain me a lot more credibility, but I think she understood the point. Hell, $288 is less than HALF what it was going for a year ago.
Come to think of it, $288 must mean that -- oh, TOMORROW -- Sony's gonna come out with a UX-100 that runs OS6, doesn't whine, has an exquisite screen same size as the '80 and a backlit keyboard like the Mac Powerbooks...
ech. Can't win in the Technology Race.
I'm STILL happy!
