View Full Version : NX73V/80V metal cases

Okay, it seems like nearly everyone here carries around their NX73V's and 80V's in leather cases. If/when I get my NX80V, I'd want to have one of those aluminum metal cases like the one I currently have for my Tungsten.
BUT, I have noticed that such a case does not exist. I see cases designed for the NX60V/70V models, but not for the newer NX models that would need an extra cut-out. Is any such case in existence? anywhere? I checked all the dealers and I can't find any information on such a case.
Having a case without a CF cut-out would be pointless. To use the CF slot, you'd have to take the p-d-a (stupid green links) out of the case, therefore almost negating the entire point of having a case. On the other hand, I could just go without a case - which misses the point of having more protection as well.
Anyone find another metal case or a suitable solution?

Upon closer inspection of the metal case, I realized that it does not have a cut-out, but rather, since it was designed for the earlier models, it compensated for the extra bulge. Assuming the bulge of the open CF slot is the same size as the NX60/70, then I suppose it could work. There still looks like there'd be a little extra space, so it may not be totally secure. That, and having the NX60/70 metal case makes the 73/80 look like a brick.
Anyone have this case on their 73/80 currently? How do you like it?
Maybe I will opt for no case...

Call me crazy, but one of the reasons I bought an NX is because it ALREADY HAS a metal case. Magnesium to be exact. Am I the only one who thinks like this?
To be a little more useful, you may find that making your own aluminum case is easier than you think. Aluminum is very easy to work with and requires a minimum amount of tools. Plus you can sell your super cool cases to other people to return the cost of any specialized tools you buy.

Yes... the wonderful clam-shell design. At least it will protect the screen at all times.

Is the "naked" clie enough to protect it from some shock damage if I say....accidentally hit something while it's in my pocket? I find I tend to do this every now and then, and it's during times like those that I'm thankful I have my aluminum case on my Tungsten - not that it's not ALREADY made out of metal - but it's just nice to have it more protected. I've also dropped it in the case as well, from maybe 2-3 feet. I still feel a case would be necissary, but I think I would end up only using it 50% of the time on my clie.

When i keep my Clie in my backpack, i keep it in my Targus leather case too keep it from scratches against my other things. If i listen to some mp3s, i just keep it in my pocket.

Do the leather cases provide much protection at all? I wouldn't think they'd be too strong. Maybe only to keep the thing covered and from rubbing up against other objects that could ugly up my precious clie. If the leather cases provided a somewhat decent amount of protection, I might consider them - but seeing as how most, if not all, of the good ones are found online only, there's no real way for me to see it in action for myself.
How do they hold up?

i like my Targus leather case very well... i got it at CompUSA. It fits my NX perfectly and it also holds my extra memory cards. I feel my Clie is fairly safe in it. I dont really think people need a metal case unless they travel alot or they are gonna play football with it. :D

How much was it? Is it soft or hard?

its soft... i got this for free with rebates at the time. It should not be over $20 retail.

Is there a metal case for the NX73/NX80? If there is, I'd sure like to know. As for my case, I actually use the PEGA-CA80 carrying case for my NX80V. I love the fact that the Clie already protects the screen by virtue of it's clam-shell design. But, I wanted to protect my Clie from short falls and bang-ups during transport. I like the CA80 case because it's a soft case and could absorb the shock from a drop fairly well and protect my Clie. The only problem I have with it is that when I'm using my CF Card to listen to music and have the Clie headphone control in and want to put it in the case, it doesn't fit very well. It's a very snug fit, and I'm just afraid that I might damage the CF slot if too much pressure is placed against it. Other than that, I think it's great.

I don't believe there is a metal case for the NX73/80 but I guess that it would be pointless for case manufacturers to make them now since we may never see the NX series again after they discontinue (if it already hasn't happened) the current NX's.
I considered the NX60/70 cases, but then after a few days of thinking, I realized that the dimensions of the actual case are not even the same (besides the CF slot). Add onto that the fact that all the buttons are in different places and the MS slot got moved, it would be pretty impossible to even use the case even if it did fit. They are simply too different to use the old cases. You'd end up with a poorly fitted case with cutouts that don't even fit your NX73/80.
After realizing this, I decided that the best way to go is probably either a leather case or that Sony soft case that was mentioned in the above post. Well...I may not even get an NX80 anymore - I'm still debating it.

I'll second a vote for the CA80 soft case from Sony. It fits my NX80 perfectly and has ample padding to protect it from drops. I tend to use it when I chucking the '80 in a bag - otherwise I keep the '80 in my back pocket.

PS - It also has a handy mesh pocket on the outside that holds my WiFi and CF cards.

I have also been searching for a metal case for my nx80 for a long time, can't find anything. I've emailed a few manufacturers and they've all stated that they don't plan on making one for the nx80. Seems to be the same case for the NZ90, but I could be wrong there. I just don't think the NX73/80 market is large enough to warrant making a case for it, plus I believe the size and cost is also offsetting.
The NX60/70 I believe has a pretty large market, I guess that's why they made hard cases for them.

Don't get them, I know somebody with one of those for the nx70 and when it was in the case inside the jacket pocket, it bounced around and created a bag full of scatches

Bounced around what? the case itself? his pocket?
I currently use a Proporta metal case for my Tungsten T and I can assure you that it has saved my T from a load of scratched, a fall or two from several feet, and numerous incidents of accidentally hitting it against things while in my pocket. If there were a metal case specifically for the NX70/80 I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I certainly hope you are. Twice I have dropped my NX73V and both times it resulted in damage. One time it was in a case and the battery cable came out, this I could fix. The other time it resulted in a broken LCD screen, thus I had to send it in for repairs. On the other hand my old Handera 330, which I kept in a RhinoSkin Titanium case, never suffered any damage.
I am currently looking for a very strong case for my Clie.

That why we use DOUBLE protection... clam shell AND a case.

Targus makes a 7$ generic leather PDA case that I picked up at Fry's electronics. It is perfect sized for the NX series and has a belt loop. It's too big (same as all the other cases) to stick it in your pocket comfortably... but on the belt damn it's fine.
I mainly use the case to carry my Clie in my bag when I'm commuting on my motorcycle.
Other times, I wear the belt thingy and it's really cool.
Definitely recommend it. Especially for 7$.

I agree with magicwv...you gotta have the double protection. The reason I liked the CA80 case from Sony was because I have dropped my Clie a couple of times in the past while it was in it's soft case, and no damage occured. Granted, I'm not saying I dropped it 10 feet high, but probably about as a high as a desk and short. The CA80's soft casing absorbed most of the shock. But even still, a short drop might damage your clie if not in a case. I feel the small investment is well worth it.
Note: I had to buy a new CA80 case though...I lost it on the train WITH MY CF512 CARD IN MY CASE! I was pretty mad...now someone else has a Clie case and a new CF512 card.

Wow... that sucks to lose your CF card with your case. At lease your NX-80v wasnt in there, or you would've jumped off a building.

You're right! I would have flipped! But I do use TealLock Coporate 5.00 to encrypt my Clie and MS card, so it wouldn't have been THAT bad...of course, comparatively speaking. All in all, yes, I would have thrown myself off a building.

Does the softcase offer good protection? The only concern I have for that case is the size. It looks like it might be a little large if I were to, say, stuff it in my pocket. Can you say about how big it is when it's in the case (thickness-wise).
