View Full Version : NX-80v bandwagon or wait...

Currently I'm the owner of a Tungsten T which I bought back in Feb 03. I used to have a NX-60v before that, and then ag NX70v before that, but both were returned in favor for the Tungsten (mostly due to price difference).
Now that the NX-80v is only around $330 after rebate, would it be worth buying one? Is it possible that the 80's will go sub $300 anytime soon? Also, I'm not sure if sony runs their rebate programs often, but they just ran a rebate at the beginning of the month, and now they have another - the norm?
Anyhow, I'm also a little hesitant because I know new handhelds will be out soon - with OS 6. I don't think sony is ready to bury their NX series just yet, but you never know with sony. So, in the end, is it worth going for the NX-80v now while the price is low. I know they can only get lower from here, but I wanted to take advantage of the sony rebate.

I couldn't pass up the price so I upgraded :)
for $330, if it fits your needs just buy it..
of course, better machines are coming out all the time but that doesnt mean the NX-80 becomes automatically useless the moment a new one comes out, you get the SAME nice machine early adopters bought for $600 + tax. obsolescence is psychological

I'm almost convinced. One more thing...
Since Decuma Japanese is part of the reason why I want to get a clie, can I get a 100% guarantee that I will be able to install decuma Japanese and decuma latin on the same system? Anyone able to comment on their personal setup of this - and any pointers as to how I can do this once I have an nx80v.

Why don't you email decuma and ask. Then tell us :) info@decuma.com

For the $330 price, I say get the NX80 now. For over six months, I have been enjoying my NX80. To date, I believe that it is the best handheld on the market. Of course, something better will come along. But, when will that be? You can always wait for the next great model, but then you end up missing out during the wait. It will be several months before a pda with OS6 is released. If it doesn't have a keyboard, camera, cf slot like the NX80, maybe the operating system upgrade isn't enough? Who knows when, and if, the next NX will come out? Also, I don't think that the price will come down too much lower than $330 for awhile.

I've had my NX80 for seven months and still believe it's the best handheld available (for my needs, at least). I'm still very eager to upgrade because there are lots of other features I want, and I hope the OS6 generation includes more of what I want in one model. I personally would wait for OS6, but that's because my motive is getting the absolute top-of-the-line, feature-rich handheld money can buy. The other approach is to get the best handheld you can get at a good price, which if you can get the NX80 for $330, sounds like a great deal to me.
The cool thing about the NX80 is that it's an old model in PDA terms, but still nothing has come out that beats it. The fact that it can now be bought for half what I paid for it when it's still the top of its class is really amazing.

I just stumbled across a few pictures of the TH55...not to mention the whole damn manual. Now I'm not so sure about the NX80v. The only thing really keeping me from abandoning the whole idea of getting the NX80v is the 1.3 Megapixel camera - that also swivels. The TH55 looks more like an overgrown Zire71.
Who knows, maybe the TH55 will actually be MORE than then NX80v by the time it comes out.
Anyone else see all the specs/pics of the TH55...anyone thinking of upgrading (or is it...downgrading)?

I wouldn't want to give up the clamshell design and the audio remote. Not to mention I already own a wl100.

Well, the keyboard really isn't an issue for me. I never used it when I had a NX60V and NX70V (for the short periods that I owned them). I'd rather have a slimmer form factor. No CF slot is also a downside. Integrated Wi-Fi is a plus...but I wouldn't use it too much anyway since the only places I go that have it are my house and the library.

I see info possibly putting the TH55 at $349-$399. If that's the case, forget it. I'd only get the TH55 if it were cheaper than the NX80, not more expensive. Why sony would want to release this product at a higher price point than it's highest NX model is beyond me.

Why TH may be more expensive...I can think only of some reasons
1. New things are more expensive is a truth
2. Built in WIFi
3. 32 MB i think
4. OS 5.2
At the end of the day i still suggest NX80 to you

If you wait about 5 years the NX-80 wil be less than $100. Won't that be a great deal!? Oh, crap... then there will be something better, so you'd better wait for that to get cheaper too...
You can play the "waiting for something better/cheaper" game for the rest of your life. Or you could just buy what you can afford and want now and get on with enjoying it. That's what I did. So what if the NX80 is $50 cheaper now than when I bought it?

NX80 all the way baby! Best PDA I have ever owned! OS6 stuff won't be comercially available until AT LEAST summer 2004. At around $300..get it now! I purchased mine for considerably more (boo-hoo) and if I didn't have it now I would JUMP at the chance to own this amazing machine for around three bills.

Thanks to all who gave their input. I'm now pretty decided on the NX80..NOW. So, the next step is finding the best price and buying it from somewhere before the end of the week. I just saw that new post of $289 after MIR - pretty good deal to me, but I prefer to buy these things locally, which means around $330 after MIR - oh well.

I couldn't stand to wait either, but then I have no character and no self control!
Too bad I'm so busy it's gonna take me a couple months to get it set up the way I want it. So now I'm carrying the NX-80 AND the NX-60.
Sad, really.

I'm not sure if that's worse than when I owned (and returned) the NX60v and NX70v all in the same month - then ended up getting the Tungsten T before my 30 day return period was up. Poor, poor fry's. I am the reason why they have so much returned crap on their shelves.

The retail price is supposedly $349, which means street price may be a bit lower. And it has most of what the NX offers, plus WiFi (I know there are differences - I'm just speaking generally).
And the NX is going for so cheaply because it's about to be eliminated. A new NX or NZ model is surely within two months' announcement.
