What DSL ISP do you use at home with your WiFi WL100?

I guess this will help to new and future WL100 users.  I have AOL DSL and I'm having so much trouble getting my WL100 to work.  So far I get LAN connection but no WAN. 

I spoke with a friend of mine who has Verizon DSL and he even pays less than me.  I currently pay 57 a month for my service.  He pays 40 and he gets pop3 accounts.  Plus he says he has his laptop working wireless with a WiFi card.  I'm guessing he would have no problem using a WiFi card from a PDA.  He has a pocket PC and he is getting his CF WiFi card this week.  I hope he get it to work.

If I don't get my WiFi working by the end of next week, I guess I will change my ISP to something else that gives me less trouble than AOL.  What DSL ISP do you have?

The DSL equipment in your local telco office is all the same. AOL is just a reseller of the local telco equipment. I am a recently retired telco employee of 33 years and maintained said equipment in the office. All the good stuff such as the programming was all done remotely by a large control center and kept a secret from the local techs.

This is not to say that the logon requirements are the same, but the physical hardware is!

In New Jersey here, I don't know about it being illegal, but my ISP will NOT provide any help with home networking. I live .3 miles too far from the local telco office to get DSL. DSL maxes out at 18,000 feet electrically. I am still miffed about paying the same rate and I still get a lot less after 'at home' went belly up!

Really? I'm in Queens and am connected via cable (Time Warner). Either way, I was just joking with you, brah ;)

But if the range is as Larry says, then one would think that there should be nothing stopping these DSL stations from adding powerful WiFi transceivers, too (I'd think that some industrial models could do 3 miles or so). Well, except for cost :)

DSL is a dedicated line for You and only You.  You can do whatever you want with it.  Add more phones, hook up as many computers as you want.  It will only affect your line.

CABLE is a shared connection.  Your neighbors and you share the same bandwidth.  If you setup a network at home your neighbors will start feeling that their connection is slow and believe me they will call tech support to complain about their slow connection.  As a result an investigation will start and guess what?  The network guy will get busted.  If you don't believe me call your cable company and ask them if you can setup a network at home with CABLE.  They might put a note on your account for  your question, but if you want try it.

My cable company told me I can have a home network if I choose but that they do not provide tech support for set-up or troubleshooting. Level III tech support was not aware of any law or state regulation prohibiting it.

I get excellent excellent up and downloading rates so apparently it is not a problem here.

It's NOT illegal to have a home network for private personal use in central New Jersey. If you are a high volume user, then the cable company will offer choices before terminating service as spelled out in their acceptable use policy. The reselling of network services is not permitted without the ISP's permission.

Also if you have a host web server, then you'll be billed at commercial rates.

BTW, DSL is a shared mutliplexed service at the T-3 Line rate just before it leaves the local telco office to go to a big regional ATM switch. It can have up to 600 subscribers per system. Telcos typically factor usage at about 20% max capacity.

DSL is mearly superimposed on top of the dial-tone from the local switch and split with a 4KHz filter. The frequency spectrum of DSL is from 20KHz to a little over 1MHz over the copper twisted pair to your home.

that sounds very interesting. I use pacific bell DSL (i think it's now SBC yahoo) at home and no problem with wifi with laptop/NX. I also use cox cable in my school apartment. I also have wifi w/ NX working perfectly. Cox said they will not provide tech support for home networking but they do allow you to home network yourself, same as my DSL.

Yes cable line is shared but you still get a bandwidth limit. usually 3mbit is your max compared to 1.5 for dsl. However, that doesn't mean if you home network you'll drain all the resources from your neighbors, that's nonsense.

Been using Verizon DSL for the last 2 years and am currently paying $39.00 a month. My PEGA-WL100 works great on NetFront especially with the optimized URL sites for PDA and wireless HotSyncing as well.

Thanks! Yes, I am using the Clie Mail with my POP3 Account (non-Verizon, i have not tried it yet but I guess it should work without a problem just like any other POP3 accounts.) FLAWLESS! I can even download a PRC file and install it automatically to RAM.

Not that I am marketing Verizon DSL, but their promo is just too tempting! They have 6 months promo for just 29.99 a month plus one month free and a 25$ gift card if applied online. After 6 months, it will be 49.99 a month.

Well, I have earthlink dsl,
Linksys wireless router
hard wired to main computer, and computer I use in the Ham shack
wireless to kids computer, and my wifes computer
NX syncs to the main computer via usb or wireless, I seem to have no problem with wireless sync, internet, or email any where.

-likely problem with AOL working on LAN, but not Internet, is because AOL broadband seems to require initiation by an AOL client . . . i.e. you have to launch AOL and login to make your broadband work. I know it sounds nuts, but I spent a few hours troubleshooting a friend's network before I discovered this ridiculous configuration issue. This requirement also effectively precludes most Palm internet use in this type of environment.
-assuming a "normal" internet connection (i.e. no special client requirements as above) mail to the Clie shouldn't be a problem. Keep in mind that while you will be able to receive mail if you ever decide to roam to Starbucks or elsewhere with your Clie, it's unlikely that you'll be able to send mail because of various prohibitions designed to limit spam.

I think AL is in the process of switching ISP's and away from AOL.

I called AOL today and asked them to cancel my DSL sevice.&nbsp; They asked me why?&nbsp; I told them it was because I was going to be using my work service more than my home service.&nbsp; The guy told me that it looked like I was using AOL DSL pretty much constantly. (That wasn't his business anyway)&nbsp; He said that my DSL service was going to be deactivated in 24hrs.&nbsp; However, if I ever wanted to get back on DSL it was going to take up to 30 days for any company to bring DSL to my phone line.&nbsp; Now,&nbsp;what the heck is that?&nbsp; I think they were lying to make me stay.&nbsp; Don't you think?&nbsp; Or was that true?&nbsp; Anyway, I'm sick of AOL.&nbsp; They are nothing but junk.&nbsp; Only a rookie would be happy about it.&nbsp;

Now, I'm just waiting 24hrs to call Verizon and get my DSL.&nbsp; A friend of mine has Verizon and he got his WiFi working fine.&nbsp; Another friend of my who has Verizon told me that AOL is not using a real PPPoE.&nbsp; He told me AOL is using something similar to it, which looks equivalent but it doesn't work the same as PPPoE.

I'm tired of having an e-mail address that doesn't have POP3.&nbsp; I'm tired of so much junk mail.&nbsp; I'm tired that my antivirus cannot work with AOL mail.&nbsp; I'm tired my slow DSL connection, compared to Verizon and other DSL companies.&nbsp;

Good for you! When you call Verizon, tell them what happened, if fact I wouldn't even wait. It'll take them time to process the order and distribute it to it's various departments. When I retired a year ago, it did take a month to get service. They have a huge center and things just get put onto the pile.

Bclie2K, since you're in Bklyn (as am I), you might want to look at www.nac.net - I've had them for DSL service since '99 (before Verizon offered it in my neighborhood) and I've been very happy. Not sure how they compare on price, but support beats the pants off of Verizon

I went to Verizon's website and in order to&nbsp;sign up for&nbsp;DSL through their website I had to enter my phone number.&nbsp; However, they say that my line has DSL already and that they are sorry they cannot help me.&nbsp; I called them but they were closed.&nbsp; Anybody knows a direct number to Verizon DSL?

I checked nac.net but they are too expensive more my taste.&nbsp; 68 a month for less mbps than Verizon is not cool with me.
