View Full Version : Compact Flash Modems and the NX80

I have need to use a landline modem from time to time with my NX80. A compact flash device would be preferable, due to its size. I have found a few to be available, though I've not seen any indication that any can be utilized with a Palm-type device rather than a Pocket PC. Are there any patches or drivers which might enable use of a CF modem with the NX-80? Also, what is the function and purpose of Pelaca's CF Modem drivers? Will these enable use of a CF Modem on an NX80?

The CFUtility modem drivers is all that you need... Check it here (http://snow.prohosting.com/cfutil)

I've obtained the CF Utility folder for Macs, and see 14 separate items. It appears that the CF Modem files are in three pairs, one pair for Billionton, one for Pretec, and one pair for generic modems. Presumably, I am to match whatever modem I purchase with the corresponding pair of files. But is that all? Are any of the other files to be installed also? If so, which ones? Most certainly some of these have nothing to do with the use of a modem, though I cannot be certain as to which ones, Also, I've read on other threads that some or all of the items in CF Utility are not needed on an NX80.

Thank you for any help you can provide as to the above. Do note that I have on a prior occasion installed the modified Audioplayer and Movieplayer files and am assuming that this will have no effect on the modem drivers and their proper operation. Is this a proper assumption?

Again, thanx.

Which modem do you've?
You can use Audioplayer and MoviePlayer with the modem drivers, but if you want to play MP3 or Video from CF you've to install the hacked CF storage driver too.

I haven't yet purchased a modem, but will buy one soon. Most likely, it will be a Targus PA560U, because it seems to be the easiest to find. I would then use the two Billionton/Targus files, correct? Are any of the remainder of the 14 files in the CF Utility folder required to make the modem function correctly on an NX80?

Thanks much.

This modem looks like the Billionton CF56RT (http://www.billionton.com.tw/website/product/index.asp?sid=109688711&code=CF56RT&m=1)...
Try to test it with the billionton driver.

Tell me if works!!!

Purchased myself an AmbiCom CF56m-EZ last night and successfully got online twice (to make sure it was not a fluke). Worked like a champ with my NX-80v. I was using this and AOL version 3.1 from PalmGear. Took a chance as there is conflicting data as to whether 3.1 is OS 5.0 compatible. In the end it seems to be.

Great job with the driver!

Thought I would post again just to advise that the Targus modem arrived today, and is working well on the NX80. I followed the following instructions to setup the Modem, quoted from another thread:

After installing the necessary drivers:

1. Run your system PREFS utility. Select "Network" in the dropdown menu (upper right).

2. Within Network Preferences tap the dropdown menu next to Service and select the top entry (AT&T). Next, tap the dropdown menu next to Connection and select "Edit Connections".

3. Within "Available Connections" select "New"

4. Within "Edit Connection" replace the name "Custom" with the name of your modem (for example, "Targus", or maybe a relevant location name). Set "Connect to:" to "Modem". Set "Via" to the top setting of "Analog Modem (gibberish)". Tap "Ok" then tap "Done"

5. Now you are back at the "Network Preferences" screen. Replace the service name to your ISP name. Enter your ISP info under "User Name", "Password" & "Phone #". Under the "Connection" setting, select the modem name you entered in step 10 (should be the bottom choice).

6. Connect telephone line (analog) and tap "Connect"

Thank you Pelaca for your good and generous efforts, as well as the author of the above mentioned instructions.

I just purchased a NZ90 and I want to use it on a land line phone to send e-mails or faxes and briefly check the web. It looks like Pelaca (¿Que quiere decir en lunfardo?...) did a great job with a driver on his own to use with a CF modem.

But most modem brands I have seen in this forum (Ambicom, Pretec, ...) or elsewhere on the web are not easy to get in Europe. In Switzerland I can find Fujitsu-Siemens, Trendnet or 3Com. Do they work with the Pelaca driver ?

Thanks for the help.

Tell me wich models can you buy... I will tell you if works or if posible to add to the driver...

The pelaca word is not lunfardo and this word don't exist in spanish too, but sound like pelado (bald)... some friends, a long time ago, starts to call me pelaca (is similar to say baldo in english; the word doesn't exists but you intuits that word is refer to bald)

Went around to all the nearby Best Buys today, Not too much left for PDA's on the shelves. I did get a NX USB Cradle for $7.99 and a Belkin USB cable/Car power adapter for $1.99. The manager told me they were going to concentrate on the higher end PDA's in the future "such as the UX50"

Thanks for ther answer. Is it the same driver like the one we can download from www.dreadscott/cf_utility_012603.zip ?

I can't open the document from www.snow.prohosting.com/~cfutil/

Even by changing the extension to .exe

That URL doesn't work as written. I t appears to really be www.dreadscott.com/cf_utility_012603.zip

The drivers appearing there sure look to be the same as Pelaca's, at least by name.

Pelaca's site appears to have changed, in that his downloads no longer download correctly. Maybe this will be corrected soon. He refers to a mirror site, but I can't follow through it since it's not in English.

My copy of CF Utilities, which was current as of about January 28, 2004, appears at the following URL:

http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/default?user=kanakanak&templatefn=FileSharing10.html&xmlfn=TKDocument.10.xml&sitefn=RootSite.xml&aff=consumer&cty=US&lang=en

Try to copy what you need from there.

Read me after download!!!

After download the files you’ve to rename the extension .zi_ to .zip and .ex_ to .exe

I hope this solve the problems with this free hosting.

I test the files and works!!!

Kanakanak: some of your files are old...

Are you shure!!! On my 1st try I rename the file to "CFUtility_1.0.8.exe.ex_"

On the file properties, the file type must to be application

Well, on the properties, I get "Document ex_" and "Unknown application". But I eventually opened the "Open with application" window and selected "Install Tool Application".

It seems to be working this way but I didn' get my CF modem yet. I ordered a Pretec and I'll let you know if it works.
Thanks for your help.

Well... I'm confusing... you open the Install tool and put the .ex_ there?
You've to rename it to .exe... the file it's a windows application.
You can rename it on DOS window or uncheck on folder view options the hide extension check box... then you can rename the file correctly
Sorry but I'm not sure if you are following the correct steps...

If you try to rename the file within the Windows environment, you will only get a file called "CFUtility_1.0.8.exe.ex_", which won't work for you. It's easiest to just take the original downloaded file outside of windows by going into DOS, or by transferring it to a Mac, and then renaming it there. Once renamed, you can move it back into Windows and then execute it to get it to set up Hotsync for transfer of the modem drivers. Pelaca mentioned a third option, but the basic problem seems to be getting the file renamed correctly before it will open or anything else will work.

Maybe everyone should just ignore everything I say. I can't even seem to get myself logged in correctly today! Whew.

Pelaca, I've deleted the CF Utility file that I made available yesterday since you mentioned that not all of it was current. I thought it was up to date when the post was made. Many apologies... javascript:smilie('')

The application it's only for PC... maybe for MAC in a near future

I'm planning to use Nutshell For Mac OS X Installer (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/nutshell/)

I actually used the Mac only to change the name into .exe and get rid of the .ex_ , following the suggestion of Kanakanak.

Then I transferred the document back to the PC and... it worked ! I could hotsync it onto the Clié. Now I'm just waiting th get my CF modem to see the end result.
Chau !

IT WOOOOORKS!!! I got my CF Modem Pretec and thanks to Pelaca's software I could connect my NZ90 to the Internet. It works fine for retriving e-mails but on the web it sometimes freezes. It's probably better to access only PDA oriented web sites.

Anyway. Thanks a lot to Pelaca.

Sorry but I'm not sure if you are following the correct steps...

The easiest way to correct the extension problem is to name the extension when the SAVE TO dialog box comes up right before downloading.

For example, this shows up in the field:
CFUtility_1.0.8
Simply add ".EXE" to the end of that name and then click SAVE to start the download. The downloaded file will have the correct extension.

This is better than renaming it afterward. As others have pointed out, you can't normally rename the extension because it is inaccessible (unless you change the folder view option).

Is anyone using Viking CF analog modem (RFM56KCFM) on NX80V with Pelaca's CF utility? I have installed CF utility 1.0.8 (CFmodeminf_PRETEC.prc and CFmodemvdrv_PRETEC.prc) but the modem card does not seem to be recognized correctly. My NX80V is Japanese version, and is this the cause of incompatibility?

I modified the CF modem drivers of NX80V (CFmodeminf.prc and CFmodemvdrv.prc) and succeeded in adapting them for Viking CF analog modem (RFM56KCFM). Just replace the parts from 0x00000FA8 of CFmodeminf.prc and from 0x00002AF6 of CFmodemvdrv.prc for the following codes:

  04 01 56 49 4B 49 4E 47 00 43 6F 6D 70 61 63 74
  4D 6F 64 65 6D 20 33 2E 33 56 20 35 36 4B 00 30
  32 31 00 41 00 FF

('CF.56K Modem JATE.021.A' -> 'VIKING.CompactModem 3.3V 56K.021.A')
