Woooah, I had a chance to check out the new NZ at CompUSA and it is freakin huge! What is Sony thinking? My R505 VAIO notebook is even thinner.

I don't think this model will sell very much in the US. Any comments?

Again. Shut the hell up. Its selling out all over the price. You unoriginal and stupid. If you are going to crack on it at least be creative.

AS A NZ-90 OWNER, I THINK YOU ARE CRITICAL BECAUSE YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO GET IT. IT'S A GREAT MACHINE, AND ONCE YOU REALLY START TO USE IT, THEN YOU WILL SEE WHY IT IS SO HARD TO GET.:D

The NZ90 sucks.

Because I want it but its too damn expensive for a college student to afford, so I try to convince myself that it blows.

The DSC-S85 is a nice camera ... my P5 is a 3 megapixel.. your is a 4 megapixel.

Truthfylly msgate after using the camera you really don't need the 4 megapixel do you? I barely used my 3 megapixel because to upload it i always had to make the damn picture smaller. There were only certain times where i used the 3 megapixel and it just doesn't add up.

Having a 2 megapixel to me is enough... 1 megapixel is even enough for a full page print. It's just nice to have more megapixel but bottom line is... do we really need it? I know some people can make good uses of it for you like business or work.

Bottomline is i'm going to take more pictures w/ it being w/ my pda than having it separately. If you're really goin to do it msgate ; i would say go for it. Everyday you wait the value of your camera goes down anyways. Only drawback is the mpeg it's not as good as the past digital cameras. I don't havge any regrets, but i do miss having my camera just a little.

its not too expensive for a college student. You just don't eat for a week or got o parties and play beer pong if u want to drink. I personally saved up for a while to have enough as soon as I heard it was coming out.

So, all you college kids, where the heck do you get all your money? I personally work ~30hrs a week and that leaves me with about $200 left over at the end of the month. Subtract gas, and purchases (food and small essentials i need) and that leaves me ~$100 a month to save. HOW DO YOU AFFORD A $800 DEVICE?!?!?!????

omgitsroy326
02-16-2003, 11:57 PM
they make that much but i don't see that much money.. but ever since i got out of a community college they let me access money a little easier. I did pay for the NX by myself though. I sold my Dsc p5 and nx70v .... i sold my n760 to get my nx.... i dont' have to pay for rent, food, schoo, or gas. but it's not all that great... i can't apply for financial aid. I told them to take me off, but they're too lazy.. maybe this year i may be able to.

Importluva
02-17-2003, 12:00 AM
oh i see

Yea I pay for my rent and gas and food and partial tuition. My parents pick up most of the tuition, and car payments. I try to pay as much as I can, but I wish I had some money tucked away, kinda like a sony clie fund :p

Oh well, I'm prolly gonna head over to BB next weekend to check out the NZ to see if I really like it or not-if I really do then I guess I'll start saving-or work more :-/

I got to play around with one for a few minutes at Circuit City. The bottom part of the clamshell with the unit open is about as thick as my NR closed. With the NZ closed, the I can see problems with putting it in your pocket, especially if you wear tight jeans.

That said I found the extra weight to be negligible compared to my NR. I have small hands, but didn't find the size to be any more difficult to hold than the NR either (except for the attached anti-theft cord). I don't know how it would feel holding it over a longer period though (like reading an ebook on the subway). Tapping on the screen in clamshell mode also feels more solid than on my NR.

Things I found a bit awkward:
- IR on the side; beaming won't be the same, & I forgot to check if RMC will rotate 90 degrees
- Stylus on the left side screen in clamshell mode, so you would have to turn it sideways to reach it if you needed it & you're a righty
- The slightly recessed screen-edge buttons hard to press if you have big mitts. Even I wound up using my fingernail
- Taking pictures one-handed in tablet mode (either right thumb or left index finger on the capture button, holding the unit from the sides) is difficult since the camera is fixed, but it's doable. Forget about taking those stealth photos. Propping it up in easel mode to take a picture should work, but I wasn't able to test this since another customer grabbed it once I set it down. I also forgot to check if you can turn the camera flash off completely

There was no stylus on the demo model, so I can't comment on it. Even with my reservations above (besides the price!), I still had to fight the urge to whip out the credit card.

My parents don't make anywhere near that kind of loot but I work here at school and get my sustance from that. During the summer I work maintenance at a cathedral in nyc and pull in around 40 k for the summer. I basically feed my woman, video game, electronics, dvd, and comptuer habits with that. Also I'm on full scholarship so all I have to pay is my obscenely high rent and bills.

lol damn thanks everyone.

Omigitsroy326 I go to UMD - College Park and econ would be great as a second especially if ur allready in engineering it shouldn't be too hard for you.

Importluva - yeah but I pull 6 days a week and 13 hr days. i pretty much kill myself. I'm also the IT head for their computer net work and when they have special events I'm an usher so thats why I get so much. Also its b4 taxes.

Littlesix. Yeah if I do go towards federal law enforcment that is what I'd do. However I'm still not sure if I want to do that. I also have the polotical side opened up including prosecutor or, because I have duel citizenship, ambasador to Barbados... easy job but oh so great to get paid to live there. Oh also stick it out and go with datavision. Techonweb may have lied but datavision sent mine out this morning. You'll still save a lot.

Yellowrose- thanks :)

And finally Ralchizar - Don't knock being a teacher. It is a valuable and much needed position in society today... And depending on how long you work at a place you can truly get paid. One of my dad's friends just retired from ny public schools after teaching for many yrs. He was pulling in over 150k a year and his retirment fund/ pension is very very nice.

Thanks agian everyone. Since its a snow day and we are under 2 ft of snow. I'm going back to bed. :)

Well, if you want to go into the prosecution law side of the table, you're going to need a law degree under your belt (if you don't have one already ;). They have a tough job, long hours, and judging from what a friend of mine tells me, I make more than she does.

For me - love my job - get sent all over the world. I don't have a politics background, but I pick up things as I travel.

I'm gonna have to bag the online purchase in total. The headache of chasing the savings isn't going to be worth it to me. If I do CUSA, I'll probably break even with the free MS; I'm in the market for one anyway, so there's the saved money I was chasing.

Now to find one out of town. Boss tells me today that I'm hitting the road. I'm sure my facial expression was "NOW?!?!?!?!", thinking to myself that I'm on the NZ prowl and I've gotten myself worked up to the point that I'll probably be a foaming-at-the-mouth lunatic til I have one in my clutches. I've been PDA-less for too long a time now (a whopping two weeks), and I'm going through serious DT's.

Glad the online thing worked for you. Me on the other hand....

I already saw the NZ in person at Circuit City here and all I could say is it is really a brick! (sorry!). It is not for me. I'm still holding on to my NX and wait for the next NX model. I just spent 15 minutes playing with it and I really like the camera. The back is a disappointment for me. Why did Sony put a hump on its back?!

But overall, I like all the features it had. The one I played with is not installed with Picsel Viewer! I compared the screen resolutions with my NX and no difference at all!

I picked up an NZ at Circuit City in Fresno today. Except for the camera bulge, it's not much larger than my NX in it's Innopocket case. It's certainly not a brick and fits my small hands well. It also fits in the Grinder Gear Basecamp case, although it's tight.

Got my hands on one today. Just too big for a PDA. Plug in the extras and it is almost the size of a sub laptop. If they added a 5gb HD (possible with todays tech) more ram, etc. it may be worth it but for now, it is a total rip off given the price/features.

the nz90 and the nx70 are the exact same thing except for the built in blue tooth and the camera. I really doubt that you would gain any extras for college from either one. If you need bluetooth you can get the nz90 and it's built in, or you can get the bluetooth ms for the 70. if you want a decent camera you must get the 90 or the 80.

If you don't need Bluetooth, get the NX80. It has a better cradle, longer battery life, more usable RAM, lighted keyboard, Graffiti 2, Decuma, smaller size, the screen is just as nice with hard buttons added, more heap RAM, just to name a few items. If you take away Bluetooth and a slightly better camera, the NX80 has the NZ beat.

Look for the bright side. If it is a Black Brick I can find one and last use for a device with soo much features. I can throw it on the head of someone if I need to defend myself. Of course that I will not like to do it but in case of emergency I think this is valid.

The NZ90 does suck.

I am so diapposinted with this model I felt like I was ripped off:

1) $800

2) Battery life totally sucks

3) Camera takes way too long to startup so miss all the shots you have a pocket pda for

4) Even though camera is 2 MP, quality is like a 1.3 MP, and dont even bother to take pics inside with the flash they still are very bad quality, why even bother to put a flash on it?

5) Cant swivel the camera

6) It is a brick and huge

I am going to put mine on ebay this week and will get either the NX73 or NX80 havent decide yet, all depends on how battery life and camera startup is on the new models

For people who say I am whining, well since I paid $800 for it I think that gives me the reason to whine..LOL

I sold my NZ months ago along with my tg50. Now I'm thinking of getting the NZ again (hopefully today). Yes it's large but it's nice, davy19 seems to have bought a bad unit. The NZ I had took GREAT pictures and battey life was good. I been reading about power adaptors that have 4 AA batteries so that will help greatly to be able to use the camera for many shots.

I hope I get one that does not have any major issues. The reason I want to get the NZ again is because now I have the unlimited data for $19.99 a month with T-Mobile. I always like Wep Pro for web use and now with unlimited that's izing on the cake. Plus it's nice to snap a picture and send it at any time and anywhere to anyone with an email address.

The only thing that's holding me back A LITTLE is the new NX80 (Hope I got that right). It seems to be really nice and slim and with a lighted keyboard. The camera worries me because I really really like the camera on the NZ. I took so many pictures with my old NZ and they printed out FANTASTIC.

Well, today is the day I will have to make up my mind. I wil buy the NZ tonight or wait for the NX80. Don't you just hate this, I need to stop visiting these forums and I know I will own ONE pda for years.

I am a college student too. and I know at least 2 of my classmates that have the NZ90. Trust me on this, this little device can make all your peers and friends very jealous... Why? because it's a sweet camera and also a pda mp3 player, voice recorder, nintendo, clock, remote.... Specially if you're in college, you want things to simplify when you move out. If anyone here knows how Painful it is to Move... You know what I'm talking about. NZ90 certainly makes college live a bit little eailer for me... during class and after class. Putting in my money on a xbox with 10 games would be enough just to get the NZ90 instead... but it does much more.... Everyone knows in college, girlfriends comes and goes... I know only one thing for sure, my NZ90 is here to stay. =) I love it.... Even if you guys claim that it's a black brick, I still love it the way it is.

George M:

If you're happy with the NZ90, you may want to stick with that instead of going to the NX80: The '80 has no BlueTooth, so you can forget instantly emailing pics to friends, unless you want to spend another $100 or so for a BT MS. I assume here that you were using the BT in you last NZ to link to a BT phone...

It's obvious from the discussion so far that different people have different needs for PDAs. Consequently, different PDAs are right to meet those needs. Some people find the NZ90 to fit their needs just right; others prefer another device. Could we at least agree to that? Please?

I actually think that NZ90 is the best PDA out .. would actually fulfil all my needs, I could even sell my digi cam ..

and ain't really so big .. I only wish I could spent those $900 for it ($600 for NZ + $200 for 1GB CF + $100 sony wifi card) ..
and that would be my perfect PDA ..

btw. I've got notebook (dell latitud c640 with only 2,4kg) but imho 290g NZ is much more portable .. and the keyboard is just great .. => only pity that doesn't have got the backlight ..

the biggest problem IMO is for all the bulk the camera really sucks for $800

Serisouly for that mcuh it should be a camera that I would want to save my pics

the quality just isnt there unless it outside shots only

I have found the camera to be a really great asset for the NZ-90. Inside shots have been great and with the Sony (Sub) printer it is a camera I am proud to own. It does not SUCK for $800, if you remember for that $800 you also get a pretty decent pda "BRICK".

OK, y'all stop calling the NZ90 a PDA - it's a friggin "potrait-orientation" sub-notebook with an OTT camera. Your butt-cheeks are bound to start sagging if you carry it regularly in the back-pocket - IF it damn well fits!

Ok don't flame me, just my opinion. :D

I love clie's generally and IMHO, the NX(R)70 is near-perfection in form, function & style!!! All clie's before the nx(r)70 were evolutionary, everything after has been derived and the NZ90..... it's just somewhere out there....
