If you have an IBM thinkpad you can do a direct infrared transfer using its infrared port by going to My computer and then infared recipient align the clie with the infared port and on the IBM a option should appear called send files browse through the files and select one it will then beam it to your clie.

this is stupid, but I can't, for the life of me, find the IR port on my Thinkpad T30 (work PC). It's so frustrating.

I believe the IR port for the T30s are on the left side, not the right. My T22 has it on the right, like it's listed above, and I recall getting those annoying system sounds whenever I have a line-of-sight with a T30 user.
EDIT: Whoops, my apologies. It seems I got the sides mixed up. My T22 was the one with the IR on the LEFT, so that diagram definitely is correct. I switched laptops a few months back and I didn't have my 22 around at the time of posting to verify.

I will try this tonight
I have an even older Thinkpad 570 (PII 266)
I found mine in the front-left corner of T40 right in front of the "Pentium M" logo, next to the PC Card slots. When I turn on the Clie beam, the laptop recognizes it but, I can't seem to be able to HotSync with it :(

DanT,
Right click on your HotSync app in the system tray and make sure "InfraRed" is selected along with what I assume is Local USB. That should fix up the syncing issue :)
Thanks for the tip. I did that but still no syncing. Strange.

This is funny...people are actually replying to this...I guess I'm not the only one with Thinkpad/IR questions. FWIW, my IR port on my T30 was right where the diagram showed.
I stick with my super fast and very reliable cable for now. It's small enough to fit in my pocket anyway.

I did this a while back and seem to remember that you need to make sure that you don't have an COM port conflicts. I don't remember the details. But beware, it is painfully slow.

I have a ThnikPad TransNote, and although it DOES have IrDA, I use the NZ90 cradle, because it's a much faster and secure connection. The TransNote IrDA window is very conveniently located right on the front of the machine.

I had may happy moment today when I successfully saved a PDF from CLIEMail to MemoryStick, then transferred to my Thinkpad via IR for "easier" reading. Hell, I have no need for a MS Flash drive now!

I've had to Hotsync my SJ33 with my T20's IR port in a jam, but I prefer the cradle. Much faster.

Thanks for the comment. I think I just forget about HotSyncing with IR.

Did it work for everyone who tried it?
I can beam apps, data, etc. Whenever my Clie is on the direct line, a popup message come out on the laptop screen, but not HotSync, which I don't care any more if the process is too slow. Beaming business card to the laptop is a neat trick.

I was able to hotsync for quite a while via infared. The one day, it quit working. Now my laptop only wants to do the file transfer deal.
Any clues?
