I have heard so many ways to do it that I am more confused then when I started looking into it.
Please give me some basics about backing up my info from my NX60 to my PC and Memory stick..(and if you wouldn't mind also how to resore from those sources)
I am not just asking this because I am lazy, I have researched it, but I am just a little over-whelmed here...I had no idea the depth and expansiveness of the Handheld world....
...it just keeps going and going....anyway, please help me with the above mentioned questions...

Just use the built in back up app to back up to your MemStick.
Then you can use MS Import to drag a copy of the contents of your card to your PC. In effect, you'll have a back up of your back up (so handy if you lose your MemStick)
Back up to memstick often, no less than weekly (I do it on a daily basis...I play with betas often . . . ;))

look into the app "backupman" i love it and it works great - you can even schedule your backups.

How in fact do I use MS-backup?
Thanks,

I've never heard of the one you mentioned, but I hear allot of people either mentioning backup buddy or just using the MS Backup that Yellowrose mentioned.
What is it about the "backupman" that you like and how is it comparable to what is out there?
Thanks,

i've tried them all... and i really appreciate backupman most. look it up on palmgear and give it a try. you install part of it in RAM, and part on the MS... you can backup everything in RAM anytime you like - or even on a schedule! if you ever have to do a hard reset, you just run backupman on the MS, and click restore device and in a few seconds you're totally back to normal - preferences and everything - i mean as if nothing ever happened. you can even selectively backup or restore individual files in case you want to go back to an older pref file, etc. very nice... give it a try you won't be disappointed.

MsBackup doesn't offer that kind of control?

Well actually I have been a long long time registered user of Backup Buddy [BB].
I have used it on Palm V's, Vx's, m505's, m515's, and my NR series.
Unfortunately I have had a few problems with it on my NX70v.
Now there are reports of many people saying that they have had positive responses form using it with there NX series units.
I have not...
So because I wanted a scheduled backup [I forget to backup on my own daily, and play with a lot of beta products] that will work with OS5 [NX] I have been
testing Backup Man.
I have just as of yesterday registered it for $10.00, and feel a bit more secure.
Not only can you backup daily without flinching but you can cycle how many backups you want on you MS...
This is good in-case you backup a corrupt program and need to go back to a earlier version...
Example I have 3 as my # of backups that I want, so I now have a backup for 3/14/03, 3/15/03, 03/16/03...
So if a beta program messed up something on 3/16/03 I really don't want to restore a bad version so I can go back 1 or 2 days...
Yes I would have lost which ever day I chose but I would have lost a awful lot more with out the foresight.
Well that's my opinion.
Back to the question of BB vs Backup Man.
This is the response I got from Blue Nomad the makers of BB:
Hello,
Thanks for your message. Still no news.. Please note that BackupBuddyVFS
(handheld application) isn't officially OS 5 compatible at this time. We
hope to release an updated version soon. We apologize for any
inconvenience, but don't have an estimate on when this new version will
be ready. At this time you may be able to use BBVFS for standard
backup.. the only issues we have heard of are with scrolling in the
advanced screen (display issues). Instead of scrolling a workaround may
be to write the first letter of the filename you want to scroll to.
BackupBuddy for Windows desktop application has been shown to be
compatible with OS 5 devices. Palm has listed BackupBuddy on the
Tungsten compatible page:
http://www.palm.com/support/tungstent/compatibility.html#J
We have heard that ROM backup on Sony OS 5 Devices doesn't currently
work. We are planning on upgrading BackupBuddy for better support in the
future. For now if you have an OS 5 device, the best thing to do is to
use BackupBuddy for RAM backup only when hotsyncing.
Sincerely,
Blue Nomad Support
support@bluenomad.com
In closing I have been a supporter of Blue Nomad for many years and have been waiting for there product update on this issue.
I feel that they dropped the ball on this and are not at least with the OS5 introduction been unable to keep up with the technology curve as I feel a company that's
primarily in business to offer software for Palms, Palm OS's should be.
So my loyalty and money is now going to Backup Man (Bits n Bolts)...
Hope this helps

I appreciate the help in comparing those two programs.
I had also heard of problems with Back-up buddy, but I also heard there were no problems...Now I know, there are problems.
I think I'll try Backup Man as clieZilla2 first mentioned it being the type of program you detailed quite well.
Thanks again for all of your help,

Use MS Backup to backup to memory stick.
Copy ms backup folder to computer using ms import.
Delete backup off of card if you need the room.
To restore, either just use MS backup if you didn't delete off card, or if you did delete off the card just copy the ms backup folder back to the memory stick in its original location along with the "bckset" file (it's a hidden file, make sure Windows is set to display them or you won't see them!) and then use ms backup to restore.
Backing up your memory stick is easy... just copy the entire thing to your computer using msimport.

From what you say, it seems as if I really don't need any other programs to back-up my data other than the programs I already have on my NX60....
If that is the case what are the advantages of having such programas a "Backupman" or "Backup Buddy- (if it worked with os5 anyway)"
Do the programs like Backupman just make the process of backing up easier and that's why they are attractive?
Or is there more to it then meets the eye?
Help me in dealing with this competing forces!
Thanks again,

There's nothing more to Backupman, etc. than meets the eye. The only thing backupman affords you is scheduled backups. With MS backup and the method listed above in my other post, you have to do it manually each time (click the backup button in MS backup; the copying to PC is optional unless you need the space).
And, you're welcome :).

The backup program that comes with the NX will work for you well, "As long as
you remember to backup regularly".
I like to back up either after each hotsync or daily at a specified time.
The Backup Man will turn on at there specified time and back up the contents on my
NX to the card, then the NX turns itself off.
I have in three past forgotten to backup manually my NX and have paid dearly.
So my moral is if you are to busy to remember have the software to it for you, and
loose no sleep...
Also I have Backup Man set for 3 copies so as I said I have Sundays, Saturdays,
Fridays...
If I installed a program on Sunday and find it messed something up well I don't want
to restore the problem so I would choose Saturdays backup...
All automatically no worry about not remembering to back it up before I go to bed or
while on a trip and way form the hotsync cradle.
Hope this helps.

I appreciate all of the help and I am feeling much more comfortable.
So one point taken from this could be....."to backup is the best way to keep going forward"....hehe

First install it onto the unit.
Upon first using it it will tell you that you should install a copy on the MS...
This is so that if you crash and burn and have to hard reset you can run the program
from the card and hence restore the contents on the MS.
You will have 7 day to evaluate the program but I have tried a lot of backup
programs (as I said I am a happy [Before OS5] user of BB)
You can find Backup Man @:
Go to:
http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=921F8B8394547A9257EX9ACBDXE41AA8&productId=51970&optionId=1_1_2&productType=2&catalog=1&txtSearch=backup+man§ionId=0&platformId=1
You can download a beta copy.
If you require any addition info please ask away.

I appreciate your always helpful replies...
I noticed you sent me to handango's site...
Do you prefer that over Palmgear?
Thanks,

Well yes.
If you sign-up and become a registered user of Handango, as you purchase software
you get credits.
These credits can be redeemed in as a % disco upon accumulating a number of them.
I have also used PalmGear but I purchased Backup Man for $9.00 due to the
credits.
If you are a new registered user well you get automatically 10% off our total
purchase.
I would recommend them since they are working work ones business like this.

I don't care what backup program you use. It's the strategy you use! Make lots of rolling and current backups, don't relay on the desktop either. It is very easy to unknowingly contaminate a backup, this is the best advice I can give. BTW, experience is the best teacher, especially when all your hard work goes up in smoke!

Making Back-ups is the bottom line and that is what I need/want to do and am going to do quite often and repeatidly (is that a word?..hehe)
Thanks again,

Just had my first hard reset on my NX and MSBackUp was helpful:) Still wish BUB was OS 5 compatible.:(
Oh, forgot. The hard reset occured ironically enough when installing BackUp man and a few other programs.

I'll make sure to use the built in back up app to back up to my MemStick and make a dup of it on my computer BEFORE I start installing programs that will let me make back-ups!
Thanks,
