View Full Version : Memory stick on PC

I am new to the Palm platform with the NX70V. I was able to rip MP3, then transfer to a memory stick via hot syncing except I was not happy with the speed. My previous experience with my laptop and a compact flash card from my digital camera suggested that perhaps a PC card adapter would work. So I got the Dazzle 4-in-1 PC card adapter. Not only did the thing not work - it asked me if I wanted to format the memory stick! Plus it actually screwed up the formating on the memory stick even when I said no to the formating question. What gives? Aren't these things cross-platform? Am I not supposed to be able to use the memory stick on a gadget such as a camera or a PDA, and be able to pop it into a PC and read it? Can someone help me?

Try running an app on the Clie called MSImport. Your Memory Stick will look like an external hard drive to your PC.

MS Import did not recognzie the memory stick being present.

Read the CLIE manual about the MSImport (on your PDA) and MSExport (on your PC) utilities.

What you're asking for is definitely possible without 3rd party readers; in fact, it was a reasonably important selling point for Clies for a very long time (even now, since the TT requires 3rd party software).

Someone else gave me the correct answer. Below is the message I received elsewhere.

"I don't think it's the Dazzle's fault. Sony released a patch about 2 weeks ago, and one of the things it fixes is card readers not being about to read Mem Sticks formatting on the NX series. You can download it here: http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/nx70v/softupdates/ "

So the patch worked then? I see that the patch says it fixed a problem related to reading the sticks, but never had heard anyone have that problem until now.

Hmm, I have NOT applied the patch nor did I need too. MS Import flatout flies compared to other MS readers(on 4 XP PC's). It'll dazzzle the Dazzle:)! I can transfer 123mb in just a minute or so using MS Import. Using other readers take a heck of a lot longer.

Other than formatting, the MS should able to be read/write in the camera, Clie, and the PC with no issues. If you have issues, then something obviously is wrong.

Maybe I did not make myself clear. I use a laptop predominantly for my work, and I have a PCMCIA card adapter for compact flash which helped me enormously with downloading pictures from my digital camera. So I thought a similar approach with the Dazzle 4-in-1 PCMCIA card adapter would do the same. Well it did not initially until I applied the patch mentioned in my previous post. After that, the memory when inserted into the adapter in my PCMCIA slot looks like a regular drive to which I can just drag and drop files in Explorer. I'm not sure how fast it goes, but 15 MP3 at about 2-3 MB went in less than a minute. And they play on the SONY. So I am happy.

Well, I'm happy that you found a solution, but we're just letting you know that you could have had the Memory Stick appear on your laptop as a removeable drive and transfer at even higher speeds by placing your CLIE in the cradle and starting the MSImport application. It's not too late; you can still read the manual and figure out how to set it up (it's easy).

I just did an experiment. Twelve MP3 files took MSimport about a minute, but on the PCMCIA card, it took 35 seconds. I presume this is the difference between whatever bus speed the PC card uses vs. the USB. In any case, I am indeed happy with this PC card solution particular since the PC card is far more transportable than the cradle or even just the USB hot sync cable.

Great! Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the confusion!
