Atlanta traffic never ceases to surprise me -- caught this last night going home with my UX50-- A roasting minivan . Looked like mechanical problems, and was causing traffic to CREEP (Otherwise I wouldn't have gotten the video)

That's a very interesting video!
What caused the crash, some guy too busy playing with his handheld to watch the road?
And your turn signal is on the whole time too.
;) I'm just kiddin'.
Considering it was shot on a handheld at night from inside a moving car, that video isn't too bad!
It's interesting junk like that I'll be capturing too, someday.
I think it's time to retire my Mavica FD5. :(
I'm not familiar with the UX. Was it "point and shoot" or did you have to set stuff up first?
How big did the video end up being?

As near as I able to determine it was mechanical difficulty. Traffic was backed up for almost a mile and was going alternatively from slow to dead stop. Averageing at best 5 mph. I saw the smoke nearly a minute before I started the video - I reached for the unit when I saw the first flames.
Yes - You can set the capture button opposite the camera to activate Still, Movie or Voice recorder -- I had coincentally set it to Movie capture the day before. One press brings up the app, turning on the UX50 at the same time - another press starts the capture. So It I twisted the camera out, flipped the screen while the car was stopped. Traffic started moving again and then started to give the burning car a full lane's worth of distance. He was stopped in the side of the rode between an exit and the main road in the massive concrete cloverleaf that makes up the 85/285 interchange. You can see cars going behind him. I started the video just before I started to shift out of the right hand lane.
As far as I know, no one was hurt. I only saw the one guy at the rear of the vehicle. He was just standing there. There were several items that looked like child car seats that had been pulled out the rear -- salvage? Was he going for a fire extenguisher early on? I don't know.
I heard some loud pops as I left the area , but no explosions.. I'm assuming that was windows or something.
Coincidently on the other side of the junction in the lane I moved to was a stalled car. Traffic was moving after that, but between those gawking at both cars was probably the cheap reason for the slow traffic.
Taking the video was a split second decision, and I was doubtful I would get anything close to this. I could see enough from the screen to see that something was on the screen -- but little more. My attention was more on the road. And it did take me a bit to end the clip as you can tell. I was lucky to get what I got.
I've got several good videos with the unit - you can see several on the TextAmerica site. I've got a couple more( The Atlanta TechTv visit) on my website and there are links on my TextAmerica to those. Some people realize that you are taking pictures with this thing -- NO one seems to expect video... :D

Wow! Impressive video for the wee UX50. Years ago I drove slowly by a carfire and MAN was the heat UN-BELIEVABLE...right through an enclosed car.

Impressive capture considering it's at night through a window! I keep my capture button set for movie capture as well ever since a unique amateur-reporter incident I had. One day, just a few years ago (before I owned my clie), I carried a small digital video camera and had it with me in my car when I approached a scene where what turned out to be a toyota truck and a car met in a median with bad results - the truck was upside down and on fire. I caught several minutes of the scene on my camcorder as I passed.
I arrived (late) to work and went to show my co-worker the video. He was not interested and asked me if I had the radio on in the car to which I replied "no." Someone had just flown a plane into one of the Twin Towers and noone was interested in my video, including me.
I'm not trying to steal the show, but it reminded me very much of that day.

I keep my capture button handy --- with Atlanta you don't know what's going to happen. Especially with traffic. This morning I looked in the rear view mirror to see a guy driving a BMW -- flipping through a NEWSPAPER -- and traffic was still going 20-30 mph --- Needless to say I got him OUT of my rear view mirror quickly...

No argument there -- I had a good lane between me and the car when I drove by - and the heat was intense very quickly through my closed car -- you can hear me go "Damn" on the clip... that and the minivan's horn stuck on....
