If so how?

Do I need to buy an adapter on my PC?

How far would the range be?

anyone test it?

I havn't tried it. Range should be an optimal distance of 30 feet, but bluetooth is really intended for distances between 12 and 6 feet. Remeber, bluetooth is ment to replace wires between devices, not for wireless networking.

It also depends on the range that your access point or PC USB adapter offers. Since those don't have to be power-misers like PDAs and cell phones, the broadcast range/power can be much higher. I can Hotsync when 40 feet away from my PC because the USB BT adapter I use has a claimed 100 foot range and does broadcast quite strongly in a 50 foot radius.

Where can you get a USB BT adapter that will broadcast 100 feet?

BT Synch works fine with a Blekin USB BT adaptor on the PC

BT emulate a com port and you setup the synch through this port...

I have not been able to "network" the unit yet.... It is stock at "sign in" level...

Note that the Microsoft Bluetooth Transceiver that comes with the mouse and keyboard does not work with syncing. You need a BT adapter that supports virtual ports so you can specify a serial port. (At least this is what I was experiencing.)

I'm curious -

Is anyone using the Bluetooth on their NZ to sync/browse WITHOUT having to use MochaPPP?

Having a Tungsten-T, I have to disable all bluetooth services except the COM port, and then I have to run MochaPPP to translate the network connection...such a HUGE PITA!!!

Once done though, from about 50-60 feet away with my Broadcom USB BT adapters I can sync, surf, email, whatever I like.

Please reply...:)

THanks!

I use the Belkin USB adapter. They actually claim a range of 100 meters (300 feet). I've never tried to get that far away, I admit. 50 feet is more than enough for me! I reviewed a bunch of Bluetooth products, and found theirs to be among the best in terms of compatability and range. It even works with the Mac under OS X.

Yes.

If you have Windows XP, all you have to do is enable Internet Connection Sharing on you primary network card which your internet connection is using.

If you are using Windows 98, I think it has an Internet Connection Sharing add-on in the MS Plus disk. I haven't tried it but I guess it should work.

Reggie -

Just to confirm...you're doing this with the NZ? Not a 4.x OS device with an add on Bluetooth adapter?

TIA...

Oh sorry. I'm doing this with the NX using the OS5 MS bluetooth drivers. I guess it should work with the NZ too.

Ahhh...

See - I'm hoping that Sony fixed Palm's screwup...as the embedded Bluetooth support in OS5 doesn't allow you to do it that way...you have to actually set your PC up to translate into a PPP connection (ie, MochaPPP) and disable everything except Bluetooth COM service to get the Palm to work properly.

Can anyone try this with the NZ90?

Not that it's a huge thing...and I'll be able to try it myself hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday...::SMILE::

Howdy ! I wonder if it is also possible to use the NZ90 with a cell phone (with bluetooth) to surf the www ? If it is possible, then how? I have a theory, tell me if it's correct:

1.) Connect Clie to Phone
2.) use phone to dial the internet server
3.) Surf the www on the CLIE

Is it that easy ? Golly, I hope it is. See ya wipper snappers later.

Yes, you can, I'm posting this via my NZ via Bluetooth thru my T68 phone.

The exact setup procedure depends on your phone and carrier.

I can provide info for my setup which uses T-Mobile's T68 phone.

so how do you surf the internet using the nz90 and a t68I via bluetooth? Do tell!

The NZ basically uses the T68 as a modem so that is how you want to set it up on the NZ.

First you need to pair/bind the two devices.

On the NZ, go to Prefs and to the Bluetooth section. and verify the following settings, and give your device a name (the default appears to be your HotSync ID):
- Bluetooth = enabled
- Allow device to be discoverable = yes

On the T68, go to Bluetooth screen and select Paired Devices, then "New" or something like that to create a new pairing.

Choose "Phone initiates", at some point it will ask you for a pass code, enter a "1" or whatever you like.

It will start searching for BT devices and eventually show your NZ in the list of nearby BT devices. Select the NZ.

The NZ will prompt you for the pass code, enter it and check the "save" or something like that check box.

Your devices are now paired so you don't have to do this again.

One more time, go to the Bluetooth section on the T68 and make it discoverable.

On the NZ, go to Prefs and to the Connections section. There should be a Bluetooth Modem item, select it and tap Edit... (if it does not exist then tap the New... button). Verify the following:

Name = Bluetooth Modem
Connect to = Modem
Via = Bluetooth

Tap on the Device edit box. This will start searching for a BT device, it should eventually show you the T68, select it.

Now go to the Network Prefs section. Pick one of the network services that you won't use and edit it as follows:

Service = T68
User Name = anything non-blank
Password = anything non-blank
Connection = Bluetooth Modem
Phone = *99***2#

Tap on the Details button and verify:

Connection type = PPP
Query DNS = checked
IP Address Automatic = checked

Tap on Script and verify that there is only an "End" entry.

You are now finished!

So, what is with that funky phone number?

The T68 has multiple data comm profiles and as delivered from T-Mobile, profile 1 is for WAP access and profile 2 is for Internet access. The phone number above basically says use GPRS using data comm profile 2.

So, now you can fire up your browser (or other network app), and select T68 in the Network Prefs and it will use your T68 via BT to dial that funky number to connect via GPRS to the internet.

BTW - You can use the same procedure on the NR and NX with the Sony BT Memory Stick and it also works with a Ericsson T39 phone.

As I noted in a previous post, this works with a T-Mobile phone. If you have a different carrier, the data comm profile setup on the phone may be different; the carrier should have a FAQ on how to use the phone as a GPRS modem which should tell you what the phone number is to connect via GPRS to the internet.

Have fun!

;)

Now if SprintPCS had a Bluetooth enabled CDMA 3G compatible phone. I get unlimited data minutes (PCS Vision customer), and to use a BT phone with my existing carrier would make me happy.

What do you have to change in Hotsync manager to sync with BT with the Belkin Sharkfin? Do you set it to serial port? Do the comm ports have to match? Also, did you "stop" all other belkin BT services (dial up, fax, etc...)? Finally, did you have to install BT serial port servies to the NZ? I only have the option of installing "object push." Help!

On the NZ, set Hotsync to use the BT Lan connection.

On the desktop, look at which port BT manager is using for serial port. Then in the Hotsync Manager setup, make sure the COM port number matches the BT manager serial port number.

You can browse the web through a bluetooth dongle on your PC, correct?

How does a T68i work? Does it eat into minutes that I buy, or would Verizon give me unlimited minutes? I'd love to buy a T68i to browse wirelessly and GPS for the road.

Are there any bluetooth GPS's that work with the NZ?

Thanks got it to work via BT. I did not realize I needed to change the com ports in hotsync. Works good, but with intellisync lite you always have to be at your desktop to tell MS outlook to have access for x minutes. Kinda defeats the purpose, ehh. The belkin BT has good range, though. Almost as good as my wifi (almost, I say). Thanks for the help!

Don't bother with intellisync lite :). I don't.

As long as your ISP isn't AOL... they don't support ICS connections through their proprietary SLIP connections.
