View Full Version : What was the max overclock on the PXA250 TG50?

I looked through a bunch of old threads, but couldn't conclusively find out what the max overclock settings are on the old PXA250 TG50's. Anyone know?

I read previously that the max is 265 MHz, but I think that was with the early overclocking programs, or maybe with Lightspeed.

I'm using the freeware PXA Clocker program. So far, I tried just increasing Turbo to x3, for 300 MHz. It seemed to work fine (used it on Picsel Viewer).

I don't mind playing around, but would rather not have to hard reset.

Thanks,
Steve

pxa250 is 300mhz
pxa255 is 400mhz

I thought that the pxa255 exists in newer models with serial numbers such as 303xxxx

I have a TG50 with a serial of 305xxx and it's running pxa250???

What are the best settings for PXA Clocker? (MemClk, CPUClk, etc.)

Jeffry- It's not completely consistent, so you just got one of those funny units. On the positive side, you should have flash ROM! (about 3.8 MB extra). Comes in handy on the TG50...

Nevermind, I found it:

Turbo- CpuClk x 3.0

Setting Mem Clk - SysClk x27 instead gives a total speed of 266 Mhz. However, it benchmarks faster with Speedy.

To be honest, actual speed increase with programs is not that much. Maybe better with Flash though.

Jeffry...
Brayder "cannot support JackSprat on Sony OS5 devices."

I think you mean JackFlash.
I would try JackFlashLight first to be sure.
I would doubt that you have flash memory with a serial of 305xxxx.
Sounds like you probably got denied on both advantages.

Yeh, there was a thread about this somewhere earlier in ClieSource.

It seems that instead of there being just two types of TG50 (pxa250 + FlashROM; pxa255 + no FlashROM), that there are actually three. The third and latest one (eg, the ones that you and I have) are a combination of the two earlier ones. Unfortunately, they are a combination of the lesser features. So we are stuck with a slower pxa250 and no Flashable ROM. :(

The maximum stable overclock I got on PXA clocker was 400MHz. On 441MHz (the next-highest setting if I remember right) it crashed in about a couple seconds. I reccomend to individually clock the apps, it conserves battery power a lot. (ie. all my PIMs and Classic OS software is clocked to 100MHz.)

Hi I'm new because of the Fry's Refurb for $150 sale

Anyhow, I got a S01-900xxx serial number which came with NO Flash ROM and the PXA 250 chip. So it was slow and cheap on the memory side. One of the reasons I want that addition 3.8 MB of RAM is to put NetFront 3.1 in there. But one thing I didn't know is that if a hard reset occurs, you still need to run the JackFlash program of some sort to access the Flash ROM area. So, it actually doesn't make all that much sense to make use of that Flash RAM because in the event of a crash, you'd still need to have a Memory Stick with you to restore a backup, and restoring Netfront would be the same as restoring JackFlash and having NetFront there. No?

Anyways, what are people overclocking besides Flash and NetFront? MP3 apps? I wanna know what Ican do with my new Clie, with it's measly 11MB free and all.

There's a program called JackSafe that allows you to still use the flash in the event of a hard reset. Otherwise, you can back up to MS, or just store JackFlash on the MS. Once you re-install JackFlash on your CLIE, the existing flash ROM will be available- a hard reset doesn't erase it.

The main benefit of the flash ROM is not whether it survives a hard rest, it's to give the TG50 some much needed additional memory. In the event of a hard reset, you're pretty much wanting to restore ASAP anyways since all your data is gone (including for example network settings for net access, PIM data, etc.)

If you want a used TG50 with flash and you can return your refurb to Fry's, PM me ;)

What I don't understand is how JackSafe works in the event of a hard reset. Is JackSafe also in the Flash ROM? If there was a hard reset, and no Memory Stick, where would JackSafe go? But aside form that, I tried to install JackSafe and it said that this Palm device is not supported.

Aside from squeezing a bit more space out of the Clie, I'd like to shove in the importants like Netfront and maybe Agendus. I wish JackSprat worked, then I could remove/replace Flash player with the updated one, along with the new Clie Files app. this is so off topic.

JackSafe wasn't supported for OS5 devices. On my TG50, I use BackupMan. Restoring is extremely fast. Then the first thing I do afterwards is run JackFlash and exit, and everything is back exactly the way I had it.
I agree that it would have been nice if JackSprat worked on the TG50... although it would be much nicer if Brayder supported my TH55/e .... Alas.

I would much rather have the flash memory vs. the pxa255 in my TG50 even though I can only overclock it to 265.4 mhz. = Mem CLK: 132.7 and CpuClkx2(this makes my post on-topic right? <laugh> )

I also considered selling my TG50w/flash, but when my lcd broke on my TH55/e, I needed a backup device while it was repaired. So, I decided it was worth it to have it around, just in case.
