The transient drop is normal for batteries after a high drian activity. The voltage reading bounces back up in a minute

ow ya do win ? I wonder if when a battery completely discharges, does the memory vanish from the Clie? (Like the defective Toshiba e740 (which is why I dinna buy it)). eh, also, I heard dat duh NZ90 has a spare battery, one of those watch batteries? well, is that gonna stop the memory from depleting and what-not? Is dat tru? danks in advance, yous...ciao

I've read that the screen seemed "better" than the NX. If so, is there a bigger battery drain? WHat does Sony claim for battery life of the NZ?

FOr those who use the NZ and the Wi-Fi Card to post... Does it have the same issues as with the NX? or does browsing seem better?

I believe there is a 200 minute overlap period between batteries so that you don't loose all of ur data.

The manual claims that if you remove the main battery, it will take a surprisingly long 12 hours before you lose data. It has a backup battery (coin cell), which you can see if you remove the small door that's on the left side of the NZ, just below the reset button.

Yes, the screen is noticeably brighter! Dunno why I didn't check this right away. I've updated my review.

I didn't have troubles with the WiFi card in the NX, nor do I on the NZ. NetFront still gets cranky about large pages, but I find that if I turn off the cache, I get fewer errors and problems.

Go to the Options menu and select NetFront Settings. The last selection you'll see on the first screen is "Cache:" with a popup arrow next to it and something like 300KB. Change that to disable.

p.s.: what's a buring Dog?

a buring dog is an inside joke with a friend of mine that cannot spell, it should be burning, which does not make much sence either, but that is why it is an inside joke.

I went to the option to check out the battery life with it fully chagred, and found out that with a 100% batter fully charged, it will last 5 hours. It also give an estimated time to recharge the batter. I am a little dissappointed in the life of this beast, based on the other Clie's I've used. But when you consider all that it does, I suppose it is acceptable. I wonder if they will ever release a heftier battery, much like the cel phone vendors do for their phones.

After having used the NZ heavily for 6 days, the battery applet now estimates 6 hours power remaining when the battery is at 100%. Interesting. . .

I do find I have to charge it daily, and can see a second battery in my future. If only Sony would give us a cradle or accessory battery charger that would allow us to charge spare batteries while not in the Clie.

Yah, I woke up my nz9 this morning by hitting the capture button and it told me the battery level was too low to use the flash. That was odd as I should have had 75% battery. After a minute, the battery bounced up and I was able to use the flash. Kind of a bummer if you want to take that quick family snapshot but have to wait 30 seconds for the cmarea to realize there is enough battery.

I suspect will be seeing a NZ100 soon that has improved battery functions.

Do you really have to charge a new battery for 24 hours? (Page 20 in manual) How long did you guys let the NZ charge before you used it? I charged mine for 4 hours.

pdagal
02-19-2003, 07:57 PM
That info is for the button (otherwise called coin cell) backup battery. It says that battery is charged when you use your Clie. Backup batteries are generally trickle-charged by the main battery pack. I think the 24 hour thing is if you've let the button battery seriously discharge (i.e. when the main battery has gone empty), since it follows the paragraph above which tells you that the button battery will last 12 hours before discharged if the main battery pack is depleted or removed.

Here's one thing I did notice. I left the NZ in it's cradle, turned off, for 18 hours. Now I'm getting longer runtimes and more shots from the camera. I think my main battery was trickle charging the backup battery, which must not have been much charged from the factory. The long sit in the cradle should've definitely charged the button battery.

Now, I bet that leaving it in the cradle overnight for a few nights has the same effect. However, being a true geek, the NZ sits on my nightstand, rather than in the cradle overnight. :p

well after testing a few times I have some great results. After a full charge w.the backlight off I get 10h 5m. With the backlight on and set to minimum I get 7h 51m. This is for regular use not connecting to the internet, playing mp3s, or taking photos but that still impressive.

I took 6 pictures with the flash and my battery drained like a sink that just got un-clogged! I going out tomorrow and buy a car charger for it! By the way has anyone seen any nice cases with a clip for your belt?

k first true use of the day for me at work. Took it off the charger light level about 70%(no difference if I go any higher to me). 5+ hours. After a 9 hour day, about 2 pics with flash and one wihtout, blue tooth on (but only when unit is on) about 6 sms sends...um.. playing around with different screens, I now have 35% battery life. Can't even turn on camera at that level. This is one time SOny should've found a way to make the battery just a bit bigger. If I was at 50% I would be happy. as it is, if I forget to charge one day, I could be left with a unit that won't work the next day.
Case in point, a heavy drainer was my HP5455. But after a full days use, I had about 65% batter left in a day. And thats with BT on too.

MAJI

Huh, I thought it was just me! The battery life sucks. I can only take about five pictures with the flash before I get to 60%!

hmmm
I charged my NZ for 8 hours the first time and I have been having better battery life than much of you all out there. I wonder if there is a connection? I also have left it in the cradle for a few nights.
By the way, at 35% it says that I can not take any more pics, but right after that I tryed it again and it worked (the % did not change, it just let me do it) It only would not let me take pics starting at 25% no matter how I tryed. Anyone else out there with similar experieces?

I have changed quite a few mobile phones since 1995. Most of the time, the dealer will remind me to charge the battery for at least 8 to 12 hours before using the phone. And so far I've no problem with battery issue, and likewise to other devices like my iPAQ, digicam etc. I was quite surprised to hear some of you charge your battery for only 4 hours and put the nz into service.

Since some of the nz users had promising results by draining off the battery and then follow by a long charge, and therefore it showed that above theory is correct to certain extend.

WillM

Marudine,

The NZ90 manual states that the NZ should be charged for four hours before using it. So, there is a very good reason why those folks charged their batteries for four hours.

I would think that Sony knows the correct charging time for its own battery.

starstreak
02-22-2003, 09:51 PM
there has to be an easier way to check if a battery is discharging ok. besides asking how long can you use your nx90 for. Cuz right now, I did a full drain to 0% and recharged it (7 hours+). And after taking like 2 shots with flash, 2 no flash (at different times) and abobut 30min of use(not straight use), 50% brightness, and BT on. I'm at 75% power after little over 6 hours.

Speaking about battery life.... which one would last longer:

T665c w/ 100% brightness or the NZ90?

starstreak
02-23-2003, 01:34 AM
hmm what do you think? something wrong?

75% charged.
turned on camera app. no pictures taken. dropped to 38%. Took ONE picture with flash. got out of camera program and waited. It went up to 70%

What do you think? Something wrong? And my last recharge was from o% battery to a full 7 hour charge.

I do have BT on and backlight at 50%.

Something else I noticed. The first 20% seems to discharge almost 2x faster than the last 20%. Not sure if it is becuase we use things like camera/movie/etc and it gets used up faster, or just the way the battery gets metered.

I think it has to do with both the metered on the battery and what we use on the clie. If you use flash it will drain your battery a lot faster than not using flash. The reason I think it is the meter is because right now my clie is telling me i have 48% battery life left, and I can use the clie for 5 more hours! Doesnt that seem a little bit wierd? and a little bit off?

I notice the same things you mention, Starstreak. The first 20% does go faster, and I imagine it's the way the battery is metered.

The camera does cause a large temporary voltage drop, which will drive ya crazy if you're keeping an eye on that battery meter. As I've lived with the NZ for more than a week now, I've been annoyed that the temporary drop will cause the camera app to disable the flash when there really is enough juice :( . If I exit the camera app and come back, the voltage seems to stabilize somewhat, and I can use the flash. I'm going to update my review and mention this issue.

I did the drain and charge overnight routine. All it did was set the battery meter back to the way it was out of the box (est. runtime of 5 hours 10 minutes). Before I did the drain, the battery estimate had gone up to 6 hours and 35 minutes based on the usage pattern I'd established over the week of use. My actual runtimes haven't improved since cycling the battery, nor has the voltage drop from turned the camera on lessened.

for those using the camera, at what level can you be before going to the camera app before it won't let u use the flash?
example:
At 65%, I turned on the camera. Within about 10 seconds, I have a warning about flash not working due to battery. I checked the battery indicator and its down to 28%. And no picture taken yet. I quit out and in about a min it went up to 60% and stays there.

Check your cam settings.

The battery, when the cam app comes up, seems to be reporting the battery percentage as more "anticipatory" rather than actual if that makes sense.

I've turned the cam on at 90%, played with the settings, and the battery has reported back as 80%. Fired off a few pics (some flash - some not) and left the cam app. Battery level? 88%.

This is NOT an Nx cam by any means, both in respect of software AND hardware. Success seems to be in being conscious of the settings you need to take your pics vs. what the cam actually has up.

starstreak
02-24-2003, 04:48 AM
Yeah I know what you mean, but as in my other post, I think there is something going wrong with my unit. from 90% to 80 to back up to 88% sounds ok. But I normally loose 15-20% when the camera is on, and loose like 1% every few seconds which makes it hard to take pictures.

All I can hope is my next unit is better. :) Damn I'm gonna hate leaving this on the charger to charge up again when I get the new unit.

BTW, anybody got any ideas how to charge it right when I get it? I see it has about 12-20% charge from the factory. Should I drain it, or just not use it untill I charge it for the first time?

TritonB7
02-24-2003, 07:26 AM
I think this is normal when you lose that much my friend has an NZ also and his loses just as much as mine when the cam starts up which is around 20%
