So..here is a thought..does anyone know if you can use the ux50 to open gates. In my apartment i have a remote (like a garage door remote) that opens the gate to the apartment. Is the
UX-50 strong enough to open the gate, and if so, what programs would make this possible. Thanks for any ideas.

How far away will you be from the reciver?

Most garage door openers and similar devices use RF signals, not the IR that's easily controllable from the UX-50. I doubt there'd be a way to get the RF transmitters on the UX-50 (802.11 or bluetooth) to transmit at the right frequency, let alone the problem of programing it for the dynamic type security most RF openers have.

well i think it can be done, but it involves building a small computer to control the garage door, and attaching a relay to the serial port of the small computer. the small computer then needs to have a WIFI card.
Then you need a program that would allow you to send a command through your UX over wifi to the compuet so it sends out a small voltage through tte serial port and into the relay, thus making the door open.....

how ever you will not have the security that a normal garage opener has

You could set your whole house to be controlled by pcs and being able to connect via wi fi, but that has its own dangers. But then again you can have a high encryption which will be hard for sniffers to understand what the package of data you sent means. If set up right, you could have somewhat nice security.

why dont u use an access control system, just shop, install, and connect bya wifi?

that is what would be needed, but it can be rather expensive no?

it's probably an expensive venture but you can look into getting your entire house wired with the x10 home automation system. once you have the main components operating, i think they have a module/controller of some type that can operate them via computer. you can then use your ux to log onto your network via wifi and operate those components (garage door opener, etc.) just like what juggster and soman were referring to.

All that because you dont have a garage opener or just for fun? Because if you think about it, you would need to take your UX50 out from a very secure place (my guess because you should treat your UX like gold) and then turn on the program or quicklaunch then click the button. If it is Wifi-ed then you also need to turn on your Wifi. All this conclude to, kids please dont try this at home.
