Can you download applications and MPEGS directly from the Netfront browser on the UX50?

I've tried that with mpgs and it works quite good. The only problem i encountered is that i sometimes (don't really know when) i will have to rename then and place em in the right folder to let the player recognize them....

I can download ebooks from Peanut Press directly into the UX via NetFront. Have not yet tried anything else.

Oh ok thanks everyone! Oh and one more question: are the e books from Peanut Press free? I read about a novel a day (I know I need a life lol). Thanks!

You can download applications directly too -- I've done it a few times from Palmgear. I think it only works when it's a simple PRC though, and won't work at all if it requires a Windows installer, obviously.

You can download a long list of things directly with netfront and have instant access to them with out any third party programs.

mpeg videos
mp3 sounds
doc files
xls
ppt
pdf
zip
jpeg/gif/etc

there are one or two others but i cant remember.

when you go to download a movie, select OPEN and it will save the file with the correct name/location and open it in movie player. do that instead of save.

clie file also has built in support for zip files.

i don't think netfront has flash support. you can try loading the page in internet explorer and then copying the swf file from the cache (temporary internet files folder) into your memory stick's /palm/programs/mmflash directory. unfortunately, if the flash file is too complex it may not run correctly on the ux :(

Peanut Press has some free books and periodically gives them away for a certain event or season. They just finished their "Twelve Days of Christmas" give away where they gave away a different book each day. Most of the books have to be purchased though. I believe there are other sites that have free books. Take a look at Mobipocket. Isilo too if I remember right.

Killa-b - thanks for the good info! I did not realize that all of those could be installed directly and had no idea that there is built in support for zip files.

As to downloading Flash SWF's:

You can only download these when the website has specificly posted them for download. If they have coded the page to play the SWFs inline you generally can't download them.

NefFront, nor any Palm OS web browser that I'm aware of, can't play SWF's inline. I don't believe that there are any SWF player plugins ported to the Palm OS. Sony hasw ported the standalone Flash Player (v5.x), but that is a different animal and can't be called to play SWF's in a web page.

Many web sites protect their SWFs from being stolen by placing a "loader" SWF in the web page. They to a "Chaney" with the real SWF; the loader SWF makes the call to the real SWF at it undisclosed location. This makes it impossible to simply save a copy of the real SWF from the web browser. Their are PC based browser plugins that can sometimes hack around this type of security but, to my knowledge, none are available for Palm browsers.

Also note that the Clie Flash Player is a v5 player and can't play v6 or v7 specific SWFs. The newer versions of Macromedia Flash (MX=v6 and MX2004=v7) default to creating these newer SWF versions but can be set to create v5 compatible SWFs. In Macromedia FreeHand MX, you should uncheck the compression option when exporting SWFs if you want them to be compatible with the Clie Flash Player.
