Graffiti skins, skins, and status bars-- Basic help needed....

Alrighty. I've had it since Christmas. I've been reading and reading. I've got a lot figured out. But, just about the time I decided to start thinking about "fancy-ing" it up, the archives were lost. Soooooo.... can someone walk me through this?

Here is what I *think* I know:
1. For the launcher skins, you have to use a 3rd party launcher (like yishow). They won't work on the clie launcher or the standard launcher (which I'm still using 'cause I'm broke from accessories!).

2. There are programs that can be purchased to put the graffiti skins and status bars on (photoskin etc.).

Here are my questions:
1. Are the above two statements correct?

2. Are any of the programs to put the graffiti skins and status bars on freeware?

3. Does anyone know if Sony plans to make the current launcher skinnable?

4. What am I missing that I should know?

Here are my answers :)

1. Pretty much, yes!

2. Don't know as I don't use them anymore.

3. I doubt it

4. Colorize is nice and I use it in connection with ZLauncher, and I think it is free. I found it on Palm Gear after seeing it on ClieSource.

Mythomania makes skins for the 'fancier' NX launcher....they're available at Handango for about $5 a set, I think (includes graffiti & status, too)

Not a bad deal, especially since they're the only ones I've seen.

If you use PhotoSkin, you can use NR VG skins. Here's a list of sites with free ones for you to check out....

And I should also add, there is one NX graffiti skin and one NX status bar skin in the ClieSource files....all you have to do with those (if you don't want to purchase PhotoSkin) is install, then reset your device to use them. Pretty easy.

Not sure I understand your reply, Jomoco5 - it appears that there are lots of vg skins in the ClieSource files . . . how does one know if they'll work w/o Photoskin? I'm new to "skinning" so a little more explanation would be appreciated; thanks

AFAIK you do need to have something like PhotoSkin for your NX to have the special virtual graffittis that are in ClieSource. I tried to install the Kenshin VG and I got squat until I emailed the creator, and he essentially told me I needed Photoskin. I installed photoskin, and I had the VG running ok. If someone actually figures how to do it with the preinstalled OS on the NX, I'd be delighted to know.

Actually, all the VG skins that state they are for the NX should run without Photoskin. Photoskin will allow you to use any on the VG skins (even the NR ones) and makes it easier to change skins.

This allows for developers to change how the silk area functions. There was a post here before that linked to some plug-ins that had a calculator in the silk area and I think a calender. There were some others too. But basicly, you will be able to change the functionality of the grafitti area. I dont' know where those plug-ins are though, so it would be cool if someone could repost that link:)

I think the instruction is in one of the readme files. It's pretty easy. I will summarize here:

1) copy the clie launcher skin to your MS. (I am not sure if this step is absolutely necessary but that's what it said in the readme)

2) use file management apps such as Filez to copy the .prc to internal memory.

3) goto launcher's preference, you should see a combobox called "Display" and you should see two additional choices for the launcher skin, one for normal icons and the other one for small icons.

I went to options/preferences/ and looked for the "Display a scrfeen design" checkbox and it is not there, even though the "i" Tips mentions the same thing.

That "Display" combobox in the preferences dialog is for "Launcher skins", not the silk skin for VG. If you purchased one of the skins from Mythomania Factory, a NX Launcher skin is included alone with the SilkSkin and you can change the Launcher skin under option->preferences

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm glad to know I was headed in the right direction with what I thought I knew. I guess I just need to make up my mind about a launcher, or get photoskin.

in still confused, So I have my NX and I want to do the full clie launcher view skin, I put in on my memory stick as said in the readme, but how do I change the skin for the clie launcher view, nothing shows up under prefs display, only small icon, and large Icon

I've got it on and set up (with some help from launchplug.com) and am working on changing the theme/skin. If I download a theme, will that also cover/decorate the graffiti area or do I need something else for that?

Did you copy the launcher skin from MS to internal memory. Once you copy it to internal memory, it should show up in pref/display. I know the setup steps are quite confusing as you have to copy to MS and then to Internal memory....but it works for me.

I did not hot sync it directly to the NX. I think I used MS Import to copy it to MS. Then, I copy it to the internal memory using Clie Files.
