ZLauncher v4 beta 6.5 now public.

What's New:

1) REIMPLEMENTED the tabs/categories. Now EACH tab can has its own properties.
You can set different background images for different tabs to make your
handheld like a photo album.

2) Integrated the various setup forms into one tabbed form. Now setting up ZL
is much more easier.

3) Added ability to specify the Doc Reader. Note, the specified app must respond
the sysAppLaunchCmdOpenDB launch code to open Docs.

4) Added ability to specify the width of the tab title while the tabs are set on
the left/right side.

5) Added HiRes+/landscape support in Theme Manager.

6) Added an option in QLA's Extension list to go to ZL File Manager.

7) Added an option in the Tap & Hold popup menu to add items to the QL's
Favorites List.

8) Improved the Detail View. Now it remembers the status of columns,
and supports reverse order.

9) Added support for FlyZip 3.0 and higher version.

10) Added support for various format of RAM Jpeg files, including
Zire71 Camera format('Foto'/'Camr', 'Foto'/'Foto'), Clie Camera
format('FLDB'/'.jpg'), Splash Photo format('SpPh'/'Foto').
Now you don't need an expansion card to convert background image.
* To Preview/Convert RAM Jpeg files, requires JpegLib.prc installed in RAM.

11) Added Presets to the New Tab list for various format of RAM Jpeg files,
including Zire71 Camera format, Clie Camera format, Splash Photo format.

12) Added function buttons to display the second card info on Top/Bottom bar.

13) Removed Control Panel.

I just installed the new update on my SJ33, and it is alot less buggier than the previous betas. Some bugs I found were:

1) Where icons were selected, remains of the highlight are left behind

Other than having individual tab preferences (which almost certainly wouldn't use) and the nicer options menu, are there any other advantages of using ZL4 over 3.7? Also, has anyone done a size comparison?

The app (.prc) itself has grown by a couple of K, but the main difference is it will cost you 300K of RAM per different backimage you want to use. Eight tabs, all with different backgrounds will eat up 2.4M! But, if you don't want different backgrounds, you might be interested in different icon alignments, or icon text color. Those can differ and not cost you any RAM!

I just installed the B6.5 over the B5.3 and the only difference that caught my eyes is the Theme Manager gets the BackImage tab back like the old V.3.7. Is there any other changes?

It would be nice when the manual is updated too.

plus the ability disable auto-open of the big bar on the bottom where the big info, beam, delete etc icons are ..

There seems a conflict between ZL and Hi-Launcher. As time passes something makes the pop-up functions of Hi-Launcher simply quit working with this new 6.5 release. Never happened prior to this.:(

The Palm T3 does 480x320 landscape, as well as 320x480 portrait.

Installed ZL 4beta6.6 on my NX60 and cannot load background images. I always get the error 'Sys 050A', I have no clue what it means, but I simply cannot use background images. Even the one included with the beta (sample1.jpg) cannot be loaded.
The rest works fine. Let's see whether I can find some bugs...

I have had no problems with this beta on my T|T....probably a dumb question but did you install jpeglib?? Do bmp backgrounds work??

your question was not dumb at all. I actually did not install jpeglib.

I have checked the manual again and it says:

I was fiddling around with Filez and searched for Sony jpeglib on my NX60 and my wife's NR70. Couldn't find it.

Manual icon arrangement works fine on your PDA. Strange. What's wrong with my NX60?

I might contact zztechs and report it after verifying that it really does not work.

nono, I meant adding own icons aka programs e.g. as AppShelf/Comet Launcher or the new clie launcher in UX50 can

i.e. I could drag & drop let's say datebk5, netfront, memo+, picsel etc. in the place of icons for file manager, turn off, hosync over modem etc etc

Both jpg background images were corrupted. Copied new backgrounds on my MS and I can use them without problems.

The Sony jpeg libraries are in ROM, so decoding should be automatic. Are you following the manual for how to do background images? The jpgs should be stored in /Palm/Programs/ZLauncher/Backimages/ and installed using ZLauncher's Theme Manager. At that point, the jpg will be converted to a bmp and placed in RAM. Palm OS will not tolerate a jpg directly in RAM.

I believe ....... the folder should be /palm/programs/zlauncher/backimage .... not /backimages.

Also .... I believe ZLauncher creates a .pdb image file ... and not a .bmp image file as .bmp images also have the same 'issue' in RAM as .jpg images do. ZL copies the .bmp or .jpg into a .pdb in RAM.... unless something has changed that I'm not aware of :)

The pdb file is a bmp image in Palm database format. I was speaking in terms of image format. You're right about the directory name, though.

I registered ZLauncher yesterday, and just installed the new beta an hour ago. (been fiddling with it)

It's easier to configure than 3.7.0.2 was, and seems a tiny bit faster. I like the new features too.

About BackImages,

All I did was direct my memory card tab ("MS-1" in my case) to the DCIM/100MSDCF folder on my memory card (created by cameras, and used with JPeg Show!), and I was able to apply any of the .JPGs stored there as a BackImage by tap-and-holding on the image file and selecting "BackImage".

That method works, but you will have to manually remove the backgrounds from RAM when you switch to a new one. If you store them in /PALM/Programs/ZLauncher/BackImage and use the ThemeManager or the tab settings to change the backgrounds, then when you switch to a new background, ZL will automatically remove the old one from RAM, and move the new one to RAM.

Here are some questions, if anyone is game:

Are the Iconset and Theme folders on my memory card there to back up said files into, or can those files be moved to those folders to free up space on the handheld?

Would this make ZL "go crazy" if I then removed my memory card and inserted another one?
Would these files have to be located on that card too?

You can store your theme and icon sets on the card in those folders, but ZLauncher will always copy the current back image, theme, and icon set into RAM so it will not cause any problems.

Just create a new tab and instead of using the Preset of Application, change it to DA. Then all your DA's in RAM will show up. I think it can also run DA's from the card by going to the card tab, but I'm not sure on that.
Also, once you have the DA tab, you can add the DA's to the QuickLaunch list. That way you can load DA's at anytime.

My suggestion is to look for a DA called SelectDA. This DA pops up a list of all DAs on your Clie from which to chose from. that way, all you need is that one DA in your QuickLaunch Favorites list to be able to use them

You can also use DALauncher by the guy who wrote PowerRun. Command stroke will produce two yellow circles you can assign specific DAs to and a blue circle which produces a popup list of all DAs.

What I liked about McPhling, and similarly like about ZLQuickLaunch is that everything is shown on one menu with one stroke, and with one hack.
Well, Okay, ZLQL works with ZL, but you know what I mean.
Plus it's just that, designed to work right along with ZLauncher.

That frees up spaces for apps to be put in McPhling & ZLQL. I need 24 apps and 10 DAs so I use McPhling, ZLQL, and DALauncher.

Wow, that's alot of stuff!

I can bring ZLQL up in any application though, with the two DAs I use readily avalable anywhere.

I did have to create a tab for DAs, but I have it hidden normally with the rest of the stuff I never use.

I went and dled the DA launchers you guys suggested, and I'll tinker with them when I get the time. I'm interested to see how the different features work out.

I have a UX50, I had a utilities tab and it disappears and I am not sure where the icons wentl, I uninstalled it as soon as it locked up my clie when I tried to move a file to my memory stick.

I have a stupid question..... and can't find the answer .....

Seems.... I can't tap and change the DATE/MEMORY graphics anymore with ZL .... I've looked for options to change it .... (I don't care to have the MEMORY showing the actual KB free... but would rather have the 'percentage' showing ... Same with the date on the bottom bar.

How do I change this?

Can anyone tell me what happened to the Icon Setup in V4 Beta? I am running mine on a Sony NX73V and there does not appear to be any option to change the icon resolution or font colours etc anymore?

I have searched in ZL Prefs but I can not find the option. Also the shortcut does not work anymore either / O.

6.6 has been stable for me.

The only thing I've noted as being close to strange is the inability to change the backround color on the hacks and DAs tabs from a blood red.
I can sometimes change it manually, but it changes back.
They will both show a backround image if I set one, but the colors won't match up with universal tab settings.
Far from a problem as they are hidden anyway.

The new tab is suppposed to be helping out in accesing the menu, but when i'v created a new tab, it seems that i can't seem to drag any application into, it works fine with the existing tab but not on newly created one. Please advise...

Yes. If you change them enough, you will see a difference in the spacing of the icons on the screen.
