I have used Outlook since Microsloth first rolled it out. I've stayed with it because I can manage all the information I need from one place, from email through my to-do's. Added incentive for me to stay with Outlook was the Bonsai and Daynotez also interface with it. I don't have to manage multiple programs. Can't say that I've ever used the contact manager that's come with any PDA I've ever had.

Palm Desktop and Outlook both have import and export settings. You should be able to import everything into Outlook without any problem (little to no remapping of data when you import it into Outlook).

Only advantage I can see with Palm desktop is the install tool, and that by itself was not enough for me to change over.

Using Intellisync? Can't help too much there. You should be able to identify Outlook as your interface program in the settings. I don't have alot of experience in that area

Having said that, I have since set Intellisync up for others, and it worked fine, but now I just stick to what I have always used.

Biggest gotcha for me was - if you have contacts in categories on the PalmOS device, you need the same categories on Outlook, otherwise you can start getting duplicates in "Unfiled" on the Palm, and "No category" under Outlook.

Also, not all fields in Outlook transfer to the PalmOS addressbook. This wont be an issue if you are just starting out and want to go initially from PalmOs to Outlook.

Calendar is great - infact, if you are using a third party app (I have been on Pimlico DateBk app since version 2.something) that uses the standard calendar database, then all information, including alarms, is set correctly in both Outlook and the PalmOS device.

Todos - ho, hum. I need to write a decent to do manager that fits more with a time management methodology. But, at least it is partially there. I use it to remind me that the mortgage needs paying :)

Memopad - Come through to Outlook as Notes. Size limitations apply (4k?). Still handy though. Again, keeing categories in sync on Outlook and PalmOs is a good idea to minimise dups.

The only additional feature that the Palm Desktop has is the "Expenses" button - I use that all the time for managing my expense claims for work, and this is the only reason I go into the desktop now (for some reason, the macro button doesn't work directly for me in Excel - even with Macros turned on).

If you have an more specific questions, drop them into the thread or PM me.

I don't like the Palm Desktop and need to use Outlook for work. I have never used Intellisync. I have always use Pocketmirror from Chapura (www.chapura.com). It came free from Palm with my Vx.

I ultimately purchased the pro version. You can syncrhonize categories and have multiple calendars etc. It works great!

Best part is that on the PC, email, calendar, todo, and importantly contacts are kept together in an environment that they can be used together in a cohesive manner.

If an email message comes in for someone I want a contact record for, I add it via outlook. If I get an updated contact entry while I am out and about, or need to add a note to someones record, I'd enter it in my Visor (yeah, OK ... laugh it up ... I am still using a Visor Deluxe - Nx70V /w WL100 shipped on Friday - should have it in a day or so). Then comes the best part - you sync, and everything merges together.

The whole Zen of Palm conept was built around the notion that the Palm device be an extension (peripheral) to the PC. While the tech has gone forward in leaps and bounds, taking the effort to get the connections happening really makes a difference to both the PC and Palm experience.

Try out intellisync. What's the worst that can happen? You wasted 10 minutes getting it configured. Pretty cheap investment for what it could do for you.
