View Full Version : Removing built-in apps
I'd like to remove some of the built-in apps to free up RAM, but am concerned that:
(a) I don't screw up the basic operation of the UX50, and
(b) I can re-install them if I need to in the future.
Can anyone tell me whether I can safely remove the following apps, and how I would get them back in the future if I needed to:
- Clie Album
- Clie Mail (I use Iambic mail, so presumably don't need this installed?)
- Photostand
- Audio player (I use MMPlayer)
- Calc (I use PowerOne Personal Calculator)
- Decuma
- Photo Editor
- RemoteCam
TIA

Can't do it. They are installed in ROM and thus its not possible to remove them. Sorry :(
That's a bummer. Where some of these apps have a component loaded in RAM, presumably it's not possible to remove these components either?

Hmm if its RAM it may be possible. I didn't look into it to closely but I know all of the base Clie aps are on the ROM. Don't know about parts they store in RAM.
Hmmm...I wonder what I've got to lose by trying to delete these....
The following are obvious candidates (from the list in TealMover):
Photostand_Resource - 636k
CLIEAlbum - 405k
Photostand - 296k
CLIEMail - 231k
AudioPlayer - 164k
Decuma Latin Input - 158k
CLIEMail CommLib - 122k
I wonder if anyone's tried removing these?

Bryader Technologies have a great pair of apps (JackFlash and JackSprat - http://cliesource.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodID=5347 or http://www.brayder.com/) that allow you to do this for many PalmOS devices, but from some reason they are unable to support Sony PalmOS5 devices for JackSprat (which lets you remove apps), and no word about JackFlash (which allows you to move apps into Flash)

There have been quite a few discussions along this line. Apparently some people have had some luck using McFiles to delete some of programs that are included on the ux50.

The programs from what I understand are not in Ram, they are in Rom. Even if freed, the space cannot be used. But I dont know if it was the 19 MB one or the 8 MB reserved. Even when deleted, some of the programs related like Clie view may have trouble finding its brother, the album. If I were you the multimedias you leave, the softwares, if must you may dispose but you wont get no free memory back. Its all about keeping the desktop clean (which there is lots of ways).

Although the applications themselves are on ROM and undeletable, if you have used any of them, chances are they have associated database files. These you can definitely remove. I've never used McFiles, but Filez is a great freeware program to do this. It also shows you the application with which each file is associated.

I don't see why, if there are large DBs in RAM, deleting them couldn't be restored with the auto-backup. What's to lose?
CLIEDemo, Photoeditor and RemoteCam are not in ROM, they are in a hidden System folder on the Internal Media flash drive. You should be able to delete these, and their associated files in RAM, with any third party file manager which allows you to see hidden files and to change file attributes. You would need to make backup copies of the files on a MemoryStick (or PC) before removing these files because (it stands to reason) there is no other copy of these files in ROM.
