I've really gotten to the point where I'd really like to be able to converse only with registered ClieSource users. Is there any way to ignore all "guest" posts? I tried adding Unregistered, but I guess you can only ignore registered user names. Any thoughts?

You would potentially be ignoring 50% of all ClieSource visitors.

BUT the absurd is AS a GUEST you can post.
I as a REGISTERED member cannot?
I can only reply.

you should be able to post. just click "new thread" on one of the forum pages.

I think what happens is when you register, they send you a verification e-mail and if you don't click on the verification link, then you are unable to post new topics.

Why? Not that I don't agree with you, but...
ClieSource could set the forum permissions where unregs could read but not post, but not sure what their incentive would be to do so...
PS: Early on, I kept adding "please register, you'll get a better response" to replies, but it doesn't seem to help. To my knowledge, the only option is to either enable or disable unregistereds from posting. Gets my vote.

The only advantage I can see is that it would help discourage many of the random personal attacks. People would have to be held accountable for what they say. This is why PIC had to eventually make this move. Every news item would be filled with garbage from people just constantly attacking each other.

I never did get that email... and I emailed someone moon's ago about it... I'll try again.
I wouldn't mind if unregistered could REPLY but not POST.

Doesn't appear to be a problem here at ClieSource with Unregistered persons posting BS other than that old stuff in Off Topic (which was actually a couple of registered members disguised as unregistered...), however Reggie took care of that by making all log in to view/post in the more heated Off Topic forum.
What posts are you refering to that makes you wish to converse with only registered members?
Nothing stops registered members from having multiple accounts or utilizing a proxy to mask the IP address for 'attacking' purposes... That is why ClieSource has Mods and I think they do a GREAT job. If you find something offensive use that "Report this post to a moderator" located in the lower right hand corner of every post.

Sometimes you put people on your ignore list (like PPC trolls) and then instead of logging in they just post unregistered.

I don't like the PPC trollls either, but then I feel kinda bad for them as they have to suffer with that PPC.

as a newbie, i think they - the unregistered, should be allowed to post/reply. The admins can delete any post which they think is bs.
noticed also some of the good answers to certain questions came from these people. if they want the extra perks then by all means they can register as a member, no harm done. Well, just my 2 cents.

I'm all for unregistereds being able to view and reply to posts. Sometimes they can be a wealth of information or provide advice without having to sign up. People helping people, so to speak.
What I would suggest is that unregistereds not be allowed to START new threads. Here are my reasons:
We wouldn't have so many repeat threads where it seems 9 times out of 10, the answer to their question can be found if they would just take the time to use the search feature.
If they are genuinely interested in feedback from the community about a concern they have, they should be willing to take the little time required to register so they can ask their question.
It is nice to have accountability for one's comments. Attaching an identity to a post helps to provide consistency (you get to learn whether certain users are being helpful or simply instigators) and integrity.
Anyway, those are my comments for what they're worth.

Nice idea, but I don't think possible. I've built/run a few phpBB forums, and this forum is php based, and the options for controling use to members are...

...plus some higher level stuff such as sticky, announce, etc. There is no provision (that I know of) to control what kind of post an unregistered user has.
I think the issue is philosophical in nature: do you encourage unregistered participation by allowing them post priveleges while trying to build a community, which normally requires registration?
I agree that a lot of good contributions exist by unregis, but haven't heard a good reason why someone would not register. Guess some people think it's too much effort...

I think the ability to ignore unregistered users would be a useful thing.
