As stated in a previous post the sony ux-50 was on sale at best buy, however when I queried the manager about getting more in (they were out of stock), he told me they were on clearence, and they will not be getting any more in! I asked if sony was discontinuing or best buy decided not to carry them any more. He didn't know....does anyone else know?

LOL, you know, I haven't thought about it that way, but your right, it'll be great if they did, Limited edition UX50 models :D

"Where can I get one?" -Stranger.

"You can't, it was limited brand.." -Me.

"Oh yes I can, you'll hand it over or else...." -Stranger.

"Mommy...." -Me.

On second thought, it might not be good idea to stop making these. I don't want to lose my baby to anyone!

Normally this means the next model is about to arrive.

Nope, the N-series still exsist. Clearance as in Sony want the current models all sold so they can have a revised version or one without the sales in the model. Example: currently they have the free month of internet Hot Spots and the high pitch screen. In next one they might fix like 3-5 flaws or make new offers and drop price. If they want the stock off the shelves but not loose profit this is a very reasonable explaination.

You know for me (T3 user) UX is almost perfect if not for the processor... too slow and variable? i dont get it, why did sony choose to make thier own processor!! and to think it should be cheaper!

Hey UX is great just a few Major glitches

8-123 Mhz as mentioned many times before is a metric only used by Sony. When measured out and compare with Palm or any other standard processor the power is equivalent to a 400 Mhz Arm procession. The reason for it the flucuate is to save battery. More or less, it does. Major glitches? All in the eyes of those who uses it. What can I say? After hating my UX for 2 weeks, as MacDonald would say "I'm lovin' it".

I just activated an unlimited data plan with TMobile on an old T68i I had. $30 a month for all-you-can-eat Internet over Bluetooth... pretty nifty!

My BIGGEST complaint with the UX-50 is that the shifted characters like @#$%^ aren't lit up so if you need to type in darkly lit areas, it's really hard without knowing what key is where. So really as far as I'm concerned, there's not much to complain about at all.

Well I take it you havent really got some time ... "alone" with your UX50 or you would find some ... annoying flaws.

In time that complaint will fade away as you come to know where those keys are in time :D. I thought I would hate how that setup was but after a while, can type in the dark and know where the symbols are as well :). Well only ' so far as thats about all I use hehe.

well it might be quite reasonable that sony wants to get rid of the clies before OS6 is released. so they don't loose much on the value. it's better to produce less then produce for warehouse ..

I'm so excited about os6. it's even worse then x-mas :-)
and evenmore I'm excited about new models

p.s. I love my UX50 :-)

They know this kind of sale would be a bit too risky and clear out too soon if you think about OS6 because its not going to be here untill March and mostlikely E3 of 2004.

Why? Just use the bright screen to use as flashlight =).

There has to be at least a 30 day suspense or they will wind up eating all of their sales based upon the current return policies at many outlets.

On the Brighthand Palm forum, someone recently started a thread (http://discussion.brighthand.com/palmhandhelds/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51258) noting that their local Best Buy store has been dramatically reducing their display area and inventory for PDAs. I've noticed that the stores here in the L.A. area also seem to be cutting back their PDA section. I'm guessing that Best Buy has simply decided to stop carrying the UX-50 as part of that overall reduction in their PDA stock. Since it is such a high-end (and high-priced) model, it probably wasn't a huge seller for them.

Over the years, Sony have proved to be a smart marketer. They would drop price if sales were bad. BTW, everyone have different taste and value so money to some, isnt a problem. If theres a seller, theres a buyer =).

Sadly, I'm a buyer :(, always taking my money away with these PDA's, but this year, only going to limit myself to only 2 pda's at the max! *crossing fingers* Hope I can live up to that promise :p

Even though I jumped and bought the UX 2-3 weeks after it was released, the new model won't really excite me (even with OS6). Just like my Handspring Visor Prism, my UX will last for 3 or so years before I'll upgrade. That time OS9 will probably be out.

Smart choice but the past evolution of PDAs arent as rapid. They were like computers in the 1989s, 96 Mhz and in 1995, it was like 133 Mhz... (or something close, I'm just making a comparison) but now the PDAs power is doubling and equipting with new technology, the change will be very fast and until it reaches the P4 stage right now, of almost perfect, we will not have a chance to slow down.

I went into my local Best Buy and checked on the UX50.... they only have the display and when the associate checked his computer to see if he could order it for me, it showed "out of stock date 1-19-04" He told me that meant he was not getting any more, he could not order one, and the display would be sold when it got closer to that date. By the look of their PDA section, it appeared that they were getting less intense in the PDA business... when I asked him, he said he wasn't sure but had also heard that rumor. Rats....

Why is Best Buy moving away from PDAs? Too many people returning them.
Too much protection plan fraud.
The mark-up on a UX50, or any other sony product is so small. They make money off accessories.

Some reason this thread gone awefully long but last comment, since I'm in Canada and Futureshop show no interest in backing out of their well establish PDA section. They have just finished setting up and having new PDAs come in for display, even made a separate "service counter" for the PDAs in the newly opened shop. Because Bestbuy owns Futureshop, I expect the actions to be somewhat reflecting each other. As for the warranty, you are damn right, even I'm under planning of a "fraud (maybe little exaggeration of words)" to get a new UX50 because mine have so much flaws. If talking about the real deal, I know people who dont buy warranty, they just buy the item, exchange with their old one and refund the old one and keep the new.
