Hi all,

I just moved from the 665C to the TJ 35 and have two questions. I no longer have the 665C (long story) but I have much of the data backed up on my computer. When I tried to restore my data from my computer to the new PDA, everything seemed to work fine with the hotsync. After completed, I turned on the PDA and it told me to push the reset button with the stylus for everything to take effect and I did. But once the PDA was reset, my stylus no longer worked whatsoever. Not on anything. All of the backed up data was on there, the PDA buttons worked and so did the jog dial. But the stylus didn't work except to activate the menu no matter where I pushed down on the screen or what program I was in.

Anyone have any suggestion on why this occurs or how I can fix it? I'd hate to not be able to use my backed up data on the new PDA.

My second question is in regard to the Jack Flash program. I used it on the 665C and it worked great. I was able to find much more space. Can Jack Flash be used with the TJ 35?

Thanks so much for any help anyone can provide. It's much appreciated.

I went from a T665 to a TJ35 also.  Here is an email I received from the ever-so-helpful folks at Datebk5 (Pimlico).  I was requesting a new registration code because Sony had told me to change my user ID due to the OS change.  Wish I had gotten it before I had changed my name!   :(

Here is what they said:

BTW the stuff about having to change your ID is totally unnecessary and just
bad advice that inexplicably both Palm and Sony seem bent on giving out.

A far better and safer procedure follows at the end of this email and it
does not require that you change your HotSyncUser name and guarantees that
your PIM data is never lost (I've kept my same HotSyncUser name now across
some 30 Palm OS devices).

1. Do a hotsync with your old device.
2. Replace old cradle with new cradle
3. Install new desktop software  provided with new device (note: Sony uses
the somewhat weak Intellisync Lite for Outlook - you may well want to use
the more robust PocketMirror from www.chapura.com (http://www.chapura.com) or the full version of
Intellisync if you are going to sync with Outlook).
4. MOVE the contents of C:\PALM\{HotSyncUser name}\BACKUP to some OTHER
folder on your hard drive so it is now empty (I will comment below as to why
you need to do this). Sony devices often default to C:\SONY instead of
C:\PALM.
5. Put new device in cradle and hotsync - use the same user name when it
comes up and asks you.

The reason you have to clear out your backup directory is that your backup
directory may contain backup copies of some system files which may be
incompatible with your new device (you don't want to load OS 4 libraries
onto an OS5 device, or install a special Handspring OS update onto a Clie,
etc.).

After you do this, all your built-in databases will be installed on your new
device. Next step is to re-install your third party applications. Most of
these can be installed simply by going to the folder where you put all the
BACKUP folder contents and using the Palm install tool to install the PRC
files (program files) and the PDB files (data files) for your third party
applications. Only install things you recognize as your third party
applications. If in doubt, test as you go along by doing a soft reset. If
you have installed an incompatible system file, it will likely not come up.
In that case, do a WARM reset (Hold in UP button, poke reset) and then
delete that file.

If you do get stuck doing this (and that's rare), you can of course always
set up a new user name, but that is more effort, and will require that you
get new registration codes for almost all your third party software (which
can be a bit of a hassle sometimes).

Hope this helps you!

Well, I have the TJ-25 and I downloaded the JackFlash Demo and it says it will not work because it does not hav Flash ROM.

I'm assuming the TJ-35 would give the same results.

Also, Jack Sprat, the companion app that lets you remove apps you don't want to get more Flash ROM space says it will never work on Sony OS5 devices.

Try syncing as a different user so your 665 stuff will not transfer over. I moved from a T615 to a TJ35 and had FastCPU and some other non-compatable apps loaded on my 615. When I hotsynced, they transferred over to my TJ and I ended up in a never ending loop of hard resets until I removed Fast CPU and the old hacks. Everything is working now.

Thanks everyone for the advice. It's truly appreciated and very helpful.
Teri, your information was a revelation and it's unbelievable that Sony nor Palm tell you about this process. I've just started playing with it and it seems like I'll be able to save stuff I was fearful I would not be able to use anymore. Pimlico has always been great in giving useful advice.

Sorry though that I'll have to give up Jack Flash and Sprat on the new device. I loved them on the 665C.

Thanks once again. Everyone has been a big help.

Mike, I'm glad the info was useful for you. Funny thing is I thought about removing the backup folder and syncing with the my old ID before I read Sony's instructions about using a new ID. :( I should trust my instincts!

When I switched from my 615 to the 665 I just hotsynced with my old stuff (not removing the backup folder) and had trouble with it hard resetting every time the memory stick popped out. I was too lazy to clear it all out and start over. :) I was just careful to keep a backup at all times... I didn't want to do that again!
