View Full Version : Now that the backlight problems are over....
I apologise for repeating an old thread, but now that the backlight problems are over and that the TJ35 has been significantly reduced in price...
(I can get a TJ35 from Amazon.co.uk with an 128MB MS for £149.99, whereas the best price for Tungsten E (without memory card) is £138)
why would I buy it over the Tungsten E?
My heart tells me Sony but the Tungsten has:
a) a better screen
b) more memory (28MB cf. 23MB)
c) better software.
NB This is my first PDA and therefore I have no accessories that need to be compatible.
Please help.
PS A merry christmas to this wonderful forum.

TE? I checked these out extensively while contemplating returning my TJ35 and just could not see how they won anyone over. The casing is cheap plastic and doesn't even look like metal, the buttons seem weak and honestly the screen wasn't all that much better than my TJ35. What really got me? Call me a snob but the packaging for the thing was just like my $35 Walkman imitation...bubble plastic. AND the TE wasn't even locked away at Circuit City with the rest of the PDA's...just hanging there on the peg board.
Stick with Sony, even if it's a TJ25.

Tunsten E is SAID to have a brighter screen but honestly, can't tell the difference.

I bought the Tungsten E this weekend (can't wait for Sony to correct the backlight issue) and took it back less than 24 hours later. It DOES have a brighter screen but it felt cheap (my TJ35 felt and looked very professional) and it constantly crashed without me loading 3rd party apps.... I only installed the apps on the Palm essentials disc...
Also... the unit would beep when I pressed on the back of the unit .... the same tone used for an error message.
And although I had the unit only 1 day, I let the unit charge for 8 hours before using and the battery drained to 60% within the first hour of use.... my TJ35 lasted all day and was at 85% at the end of a 12 hour day.... Even with the "dimmer" screen, the TJ35 is a better device..... :)

Well, I just ordered a TJ35.
The backlight issue seems to be over, but it caused the price of the TJ35 to drop like a rock. That puts the 25 and 35 within a few dollars of each other. Might as well go for the 35. $175 (after rebate) for a TJ35 seems reasonable enough to me. Most places I looked wanted $160 (after rebate) for the TJ25. $15 for the better software and more RAM is a bargain. I don't care much for the MP3 abilities (won't use it). Now, I guess I just have to wait for it to arrive...
I never even considered the Palm units (though I have owned Palms for years) because of that hokey 5-way navigator thing. Ever try to use one of those? No thanks!!! I'll stick with Sony engineering. IMHO, the jog-dial is like the mouse - there's no substitute that even comes close in useability.

I have a TJ35, and just bought a TJ25 for my wife. I am quite disappointed to find that the TJ25 was not much cheaper than the TJ35 at all.
Still looking for a keyboard that will work with the TJ-series though that is less than the $99 Sony model. My wife and I will be able to share this keyboard, hopefully.

Years ago, I bought a keyboard for my Palm IIIxe... I thought I would use it a lot. That didn't happen. I used it to take notes at a couple seminars, and did some typing on a bus trip. After the novelty wore off, I found I didn't use it any more. Unless you use your Clie as a mini-laptop often, you may want to re-think the keyboard issue.
If you *do* think you'll use it a lot, carefully consider "how". I had a non-folding keyboard, so setting it on my lap was possible. Even at that, my Palm unit would sometimes tip loose out of the connector. Just be aware that you'll have to be sitting at a table if you get any folding-type keyboard. I have also seen some "universal" keyboards available which use an IR connection. All of the ones I have seen use some sort of mirror system, which (again) requires you to be using it on a stable, level, surface. Don't think you can sit up late at night in bed, and type out your thesis... Unless there's a decent holding mechanism employed, you'll be hunting around under your bed for your Clie more often than you'd like.
Just think it through. Keyboards aren't cheap (though I paid less than $30 for my Palm one). You may want to skip the keyboard, and just brush up on your Graffiti skills. ;-)

Thanks for the advice...but you know not that which you speak. Or something like that....
I already own a Targus Stowaway keyboard for my PEG-S360. The connector on the S-series Clies however are not compatable with the TJ series...so I'm forced to buy a new one. I did use my older keyboard...and now that my wife also has a TJ25, she will use it as well. I'm just looking for alternatives to the $99 model from Sony. I just noticed that Belkin has one...but it doesn't explicitly say it works with TJ.
I use the keyboard to write (much like a laptop), but my Graffiti skills are fine. My wife doesn't really like Graffiti very much, and is looking for a way to do some writing away from the computer.

Ah... I'm not looking for an argument. If you *know* you'll use a keyboard (and it sounds like you do), then I was just suggesting some things to take into consideration. You seem to already have those bugs worked out...
FWIW, you can find the PEGA-KB100 on eBay (new) for @ $80.

Unfortunately, Sony will not warranty anything that is sold on Ebay, even if it is new. Might be a good option to get a cheaper, used one though.
