How does one go about retrieving a page from a website that has to be logged into, i.e. the Wall Street Journal. I would really love to put it on the Clie with one of these apps, but don't know how.
Thanks:)

I looked through the Handstory Script editor help ( http://www.handstory.com/manual/hsceditor/ ), but didn't see any reference to a sign in. If you figure it out please let us know.

Tixx, I too would like to be able to get the WSJ, but I haven't been able to find a url that isn't blocked. Used to be able to get it with Avantgo, but haven't tried lately. If you find out anything, I also like to know.

I used to get it through Avantgo too. I am a subscriber to the WSJ so I'm trying to get it straight from their site. Last resort is to look in Avantgo again I guess. I'll keep people posted on my progress:)

suggestion 1) what about pointing whatever app you're using to http://yourname:yourpassword@yoursite.com
2) isilo has a tab called "access" where you can add your username and password.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks:) Good luck. Handstory used to be able to get it with the Avantgo link, but it got blocked.

Right now, I'm making do with The New York Times and a few other financial sites. Bloomberg is another one for which I haven't found a satisfactory url.

I'll e-mail them both in a little bit.

Sent them both e-mails so we'll see.

UPDATE:

Neither can do it at the moment and both are working on it. Seems like HandStory is in the lead though.:)

Tixx: I have a site that I download with iSilo everyday that's password protected and have no problems with method #2 above.

Q: Did you make sure that you had both send & receive cookies checked? I realize it may sound weird, but try it.

If not, repost and I'll give the WSJ a crack. I have a sub.

The #2 way did not work, or at least I didn't get it to. If you don't mind trying it would be much appreciated:)

Hmm iSiloX already supports the HTTP Authentication mechanism (the option Sunshine was referring to) for some time.

Haven't seen any kind of authentication support in Handstory 2.3.

I PM'd Tixx last night after fiddling with this for about an hour. It seems to me that the WSJ site is throwing some specific cookie that needs to be signified in iSiloX. As Alex mentions, login authentication (cookie support as well) is not supported by HS, so iSilo is the option.

If anyone can help identify the cookie, we can help fix Tixx's problem.

I am not subscribed to WSJ, but here is what I would do.

WSJ does not use the basic http authentication, so drop that option in iSiloX.

Does WSJ "remember" your login information? If yes, then it is stored in a cookie (or more than one) and can 100% be used for iSiloX. In that case, the easiest way to fish out the cookies is to use Mozilla or Phoenix, both of which use the same cookie format as iSiloX. Browse WSJ with Mozilla and enter your login information. Then check the cookie manager.....

Yes, it remembers the login as it is logged in as my homepage. I know nothing of these programs or cookie managers.
Thanks:)

Log in authentification is supported in HandStory custom scripts, though it is yet undocumented. If you email support I think they will help you, but because of the "sensitive" nature of individual site log-in, they asked that I not share it with anyone.

Thanks to all for posting this thread so I could find it on a web search and find out that the ability to login to secure sites was an important criteria to include in my search for software for my new Treo 90. I hope that my reply will be helpful.

Personally, I'm going to try out a combination of plucker and sitescooper, but if the install process gets too frustrating, I might bail out and try something else.

First of all, you might want to take a look at this page for a short list of web clip applications

http://www.palmtipsheet.com/avantgo.html

I found out that sitescooper from www.sitescooper.org can supposedly get into secure sites--I'm working on installing it so haven't tested it yet.

Better yet, sitescooper is free, open source, GPL software and works on Windows, Mac, Linux and Unix.

A potential negative is that you have to download ~12 MB ActivePerl and install it before you can install sitescooper.

If you have any questions or comments, you can reach me at jfdill at jfdill dot com or go to my website, www.jfdill.com.

Good luck with getting WSJ to work!

I tried sitescooper not long ago Jonathan, and we discussed it a bit on turcic's board. For myself, I just don't have the patience that sitescooper required...not to mention that I haven't written Perl scripts in like (gads) 7 years?! It also struck me that the community of folks who use SS have pretty much vanished. There is a listserv, which I joined, and got like 1 msg per month. Tres active.

I haven't tried Plucker yet, honestly. Probably because I found iSilo/X and have been thus far happy.

Serotta: Thanks for the tip on HS. I'm sure many folks will be interested to know about it!

Now if we could just figure out this darn cookie....! :)
