View Full Version : Are Clie Owners Masochists?

Over the last 2 weeks, I've been trawling the various posts in this forum and if there's any consistent theme, it is the pain and hassles that seem to come packaged in every clie box. ( I have a sneaky feeling that sony's got a department in R&D that thinks up ingeneous ways to inflict pain and disappointments on clie owners...anyone with me?)
I have an even sneakier feeling that the joys of owning a clie seem to be directly proportional to the pains you go thru to experience the joy!
Owning a clie seem to me to be like:
*My wife wearing a pair of beautiful expensive shoes that would be perfect if only they were not one size too small. She wears them anyway bacause they wow her friends and leave them green with envy, never minding that they leave her feet blue-black with pain and her heels red with sores.
*A person in an abusive relationship refusing to leave because the offending partner is so rich, so good looking, so to die for (and probably will kill you), and makes you happy once in a while.
*A guy driving an antique (sorry, a classic car) that gulps 4 gallons of petrol (gas) with every rev, but thinks the eye popping effect it has on passers by is worth the same effect the gas bill has on him.
I dont own a clie (yet); I've read so many things that should make me run a mile from one; yet, the more I read, the more I want to get me a clie! What is it then that makes the clie owner a wilful participant in this classic love/hate relationship with his/her machine; could there be a masochist in every one of them?
Please tell me, are you a masochist?

Clie owners just expect more from their PDA. That's usually why they switched from palm to Sony, but that also makes them complain more about little things ;)
It's like when they made cars so you wouldn;t hear the engine noise anymore. People then started to complain about the little creaks that they never could hear before. There is always something to complain about if you want perfection.

By the way, just in case someone is wondering, the dictionary defines "MASOCHIST" AS:
The condition or state of deriving gratification or pleasure from one's own pain or humiliation; colloq. enthusiasm for doing what appears to be painful or tiresome. Cf. SADISM.

Replace MASOCHIST with PERFECTIONIST and you're done ;)

The clies have great potential, but hinderances prevent reaching that potential.

Well, in "trawling" these forums you have a very mixed and blended perception, I'm sure! I am very happy with NX80V . . . very, very happy! But you will read many who make a habit (living) out of complaining. Sure, we all can find things we would like to see done differently, and I share some of the recommendations for improving the NX80V, but I'm happy with it as it is too!
For many, owning and using a PDA . . . trying new software, beta even  , is a "labor of love." We "spar," if you will, with hardware and software because it's what we like doing. It's not "pain" for me, but I'm sure it is for some, and they tend to get very vocal about it. I can only say to the "angry" Clieist, maybe you missed your calling in life! :D

Yes . You are correctly to say that. I ask my girlfriend to use my NX as a table tennis paddle to spam me during fun play.

There are plenty of people (perhaps even the majority) that are perfectly happy with their clie that don't complain about them. It's just the ones that whine are heard most often because they are the the loudest.
If you really wanta hear some babies cry, just wait until a new clie is released. Everyone is so pumped about it and then as soon as the specs/pricing is released....
Here's when the nx-73 & nx-80 were released...

Reason for seeing that is that the people who complain are the most annoying and like to spam.
I still only have a NX70 but I love it and all that it can do. I have not been upset about anything.

There's nothing on the market today that I would rather have than something from the Sony lineup. I'm not sure if I can hold out for the OS6 devices, so I may upgrade to an NX80. We'll see.

Himpressive piece of litterature you wrote there!
I think most of the pain is derived from trying to make these Clies achieve what they were never conceived for, in the first place!
As an example, CF slots were only fitted as a stop gap measure for WiFi cards until Sony managed to squeeze everything into the unit. Yet people have been able to listen to music and watch movies from much cheaper third-party CF memory cards, to the dismay of Sony executives!
Actually, if one stayed with the original software that came with the Clie, one would find the PDA an incredibly reliable machine, probably one of the most dependable gadgets in any household.
But the enjoyment comes from pushing these critters to the limit, just like Chuck Yeager enjoyed going through the sound barrier for the first time!

I can't speak for everybody else on these boards but for me the reason I have a Clie is because I love Palm OS but I also want my PDA to do everything. The Clie does this well, and it has the best form factor (NX series in this case) of any PDA. But it has nothing to do with the "wow" factor.

5 stars for loyalty,
5 stars for pride of ownership,
5 stars for all you wonderful folk on clie source forum!
There's such a wealth of info and customer/user support on this forum that would put the official sony forum (if there's one) to shame!
Any chance of us getting sony to recognise cliesource as "the official unofficial sony users' forum"?
Perks of recognition to include:
*Free upgrade once in 3 years
*Loyalty discount of 20% on all products (believe me, sony can more than afford it!)
*Cosultation fee for pelaca and other cliesource "product enhancement and upgrade experts" who make it possible for clieists to push their machines to the limit (and sometimes beyond...)
