View Full Version : So just WHO are you people anyway? :)
Hey guys, I've been wondering about what kind of people use handhelds. I'd just like to get a picture of what kind of people use which handheld. Why? I have no idea. So anyway, onward...
What are you? (Student (high school? college?)? Business user? Doctor? unemployed gadget addict?)
What handheld do use?
What do you use your handheld for?
I'll start.
I'm a high school student with an hp iPAQ 1935 (yes, yes, I know. I desperately want to buy an NX80V, but, unfortunately, I'm also out of money :( -- donations, anyone? :)). Anyway, I use it for mp3s, games, avantgo, english<->spanish dictionary, thesaurus, keeping track of schoolwork, PIM functions, compass, calculator, ebook reader, ruler, manga reader, sharing videos with frends, and various other misc fun things.

Desktop support. I use a NX80 to track my appointments/birthdays/anniversaries, maintain a list of both business & personal contacts, take notes in meetings, track resolution of problem tickets, listen to MP3s, read ebooks & downloaded news during commuting, list the train schedules, keep track of passwords, track personal finances & budget, occassionally watch a video & surf the web, track my eating & workout habits (my diet is terrible--I'm going to die soon), take spur-of-the-moment pictures, & keep inventory of the PC equipment at our offsite location. There's probably a more that I can't think of them right now. :)

I was formerly a student not too long ago. But now I am many a tech junkie and work in restaurant management. I also do computer/network support work on the side.
My current handheld is the NX60, though my Nokia 3650 has been doing a lot of what I use my Clie for.
I mostly use it for keeping track of my schedule and contacts, a note taker, and information storage. I have all kinds of little bit of info I can't always recall when I need to. It's all in the Clie though.
It also is a great boredom remover with plenty of games and stuff to read.

I'm a high school student right now. Looking forward to University next year. I bought the NX70v a year ago hoping I can get "more" organized and serve as an MP3 player. Those were my two primarily concern. Then the integrated Camera and small keyboard sucked me into buying the NX70v.
Current use: it is my MSN messenger, secondary clock next to my bed and a night light. Yupp, I leave it on all night.

What are you? (Student (high school? college?)? Business user? Doctor? unemployed gadget addict?)
I am a senior in High School
What handheld do use?
NX70v
What do you use your handheld for?
Simple games, alarms/reminders, notes, music, showoff, pics
Yeah, the NX series is great for showing off. People like to see things that swivel and stuff, heheh.
I'm a stage manager. A lot of my job is about collecting information and being able to spout it out for anyone on the production who needs it. The Clie is great for this, because if I make sure that every piece of information I receive is put into the Clie in at least some kind of rudimentary form, then when somebody asks me for it I always have it on me, no matter where I am at the time. Datebk5 and SuperNames are the two apps that my job sends me into most. I also use Shadow for checklists and HanDBase for detailed prop lists, when I am unfortunate enough to have to pay that much attention to props. When doing a musical, audio player and voice recorder come in more handy. Lately my show has been touring, and Vindigo has been invaluable, both for finding food and shopping near us, and most commonly in helping us out when we get lost (which is usually several times a day ;) ) I also really enjoy the camera on the NX80. I use it mostly for work, to take pictures of the set and whatever else needs to be documented, but also in my free time when I'm off being a tourist in whatever city we're in.
I'm not ashamed to say that a large portion of my skill as a stage manager is not contained within myself, but in being able to get a Clie to do all my work for me :D Thankfully the people I work with recognize this and have learned the routine: they pose a question, there's a momentary pause as I consider whether the answer is in my brain, and if not I then reach for my pocket and the Clie does the rest of the work. There are still some things I use a pad and pen for, but I would be totally lost if I didn't have a PDA, especially one with all the features of the NX80.

I use my PDA's to keep track of all my appointments, as well as for my family. I'm married with an 8 y.o daughter.
I also keep a to do/task list. I'm in graduate school, so all my assignments are put in as well. I have a wireless keyboard for the Palms, and I take all my class notes with it-it's great!
I'll be job hunting in the new year-recuperating from surgery right now.
I own several different PDA's, each of which I like aspects of.
I love the cameras on the Clies I have (NX80 and NZ90). I've captured so many pictures that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
I also have PPC devices. I have a 4155 which is quite great. Love the integrated Wifi-use it all the time. Very stable, and beautiful form factor. I keep my appointments in all devices. I really like having both platforms. I'm a PDA enthusiast for sure!
Games-who doesn't enjoy them???
You would love the NX80-keep an eye out for a deal!

I'm a musician, with a TG-50.
Besides the usual PIM functions, my CLIE and 1GB MS also serves as my all-in-one companion when I'm out of town several days a week: web browser, email client, library, news agency, games repository, photo album collection, ... well, you, get the idea!
It's also got a full set of maps for several cities, and works with GPS so I won't get lost, wherever I am.
When I'm wearing my "church musician' hat, I have several biblical translations and service books, as well as all the liturgical resources I use in service planning in searchable format on my CLIE. I also have several music theory/pedagogical apps on there I use with our children's choir program, as well as a couple of student database programs with our younger choristers as well.
It's also my financial manager with Pocket Quicken when I'm away from my home PC, as well as my food/exercise journal.
It's so useful in so many ways, I'm sure I'm forgetting something!

I'm 17, a Junior in Highschool. In Idaho...
I have a Japanese NX80V & 128MB MagicGate MemoryStick (The white one before they were became MS-PRO & >128MB)
I use this thing to take pictures, record clips of crazy things or school activities, and voice record lectures. In about 5 months I already have 1.5GB of data out of my Clié, many classroom lectures, and recordings of different school activities, and thousands of pictures from sports at the school. I now rarely listen to music since it can't Play Music, Record a Lecture, and Take Lectures at the same time. :( And yes, there are times when I really want to do all three of those together. :D

I am 15, and a freshman in high school. I use my NX70v for just about everything--web, AIM, email, IRC, FTP, hunting log, keeping track of homework & other school work, video, MP3, remote control when one gets lost, camcorder, handy camera, HTML editing (used to do extensively--not so much anymore), the occasional game, and to keep track of my favorite shows & appointments. Funny thing is, there's this guy I like at work, and he seems like the type who would have a PDA and know how to use it, and I'm wondering if he does cause that would be really sexy! :D
Perhaps I should bait him with the "let me look something up in my really cool PDA" trick...

Hiyo! I'm Lupe, moving on to 24 soon *where does the time fly?!* and working in the Airforce. I use this to keep my appointments handy and so not to miss anything appointment. Before I was getting no show letters for missing appointments *Like I have the time to sit at the computer all day and look for appts!*, I also keep me a continutity of all the info I've learned on me at all times :D, off work, well, its anythign and everything, watching music videos, listening to music, reading books, looking at images, playing games, etc :D. Gotta keep the preeeciousss UX50 with me at all times :). Gadget freak as well but going to stop that, I actually want to have money this year :D heehe.

41, engineer specializing in computer simulation for operations research but have worked in military, nuclear, steel, paper, business process reengineering/document imaging, and HVAC/embedded controls. Spend too much time in front of computers at work.
Use my NX-60 to record voice notes on my data-gathering expeditions and write many notes in memo pad. Keep track of to-do lists and lists of movies/music/books to look out for. Maintain contact list. Don't basically use the calendar. Enter dance moves and watch dance videos to help me learn more (swing/Lindy Hop/Balboa). Contact me if you want to learn! I know some great people all over the country who can teach you!
Have Power48 but can't emotionally break ties with my 42S. Those HPs feel so nice.
Yes, I am that nerdy!
Left-handed but have no problem using device ZLauncher can move the slider to the left side and I don't otherwise have issues.
Currently use a separate video/still camera (Aiptek Pocket DV II), which is roughly equivalent to the camera on the NX-80 I don't really want because I don't like the keyboard. UX-50 camera doesn't have the oomph. Probably waiting for OS6 but miiiiiiiight just break down and get the NX-80 (I have the Wi-Fi card but would miss being able to use the Bluetooth GPS) which makes good use of compact flash.
Use maps but not GPS yet. Bad cables- too much hassle.
Verizon doesn't seem to have a bluetooth enabled phone (that I could see a couple of weeks ago in one of their stores- correct me if I am wrong) so I am waiting to upgrade my phone as well.
Finally, I've been known to quell boredom in meetings by playing tic-tac-toe in CLIE Memo. No good can come of such behavior...

Am an executive - using a 615 (for almost 2 years now); had a few Palm's before this.
Started using it to sync with Outlook and keep mobile my calendar, to-do's, address book, and notes (a replacement for a paper organizer). But since then have been "bitten" by the bug and use it for e-books (although not as much as paper books ... yet), organizing all kinds of "stuff", alarm clock, running log, reminders, checklists, calculator(s), and to carry pictures with me ... whew!
Don't leave home without it!!

yes i find my NX-70V is slightly harder to use, because scrollbars on the right mean i scroll and cant see what im scrolling. And while its in my Covertec leather case its really difficult to pull the stylus out the silo, where my hands just become a tangled mess. But the stylus always comes out in the end ;)
the jogdial i live with by wrapping my whole right hand around the unit and moving the wheel with my index finger. Bit awkward tho.
I am 14 years old, going into a Year 11 International Baccalaureate course in 2004 (we dont start school in september or however it works for you americans). Yes thats right, i skipped a couple years, but when you compare the level of education here in Aus compared with that of france or england you would see that its not really a triumph. BTW, year 12 is our final year of school.
i bought the NX-70V because i wanted to look cool while using it in public arenas :D and because i figured it would be useful while i am in france (leaving on the 3rd january, YES!!) for french dictonary/translation/organisation/picking up french girls....ahem, yes and i thought the camera would be really useful, but the quality isnt what i expected  oh well. Looks like im still going to have to lug my 1kg Canon PowerShot A40 with me.
oh yeah, and i use my Clié for WorldMate currency conversion and weather reports, and MP3s of course. Pr0n on the ultra-schweet huge screen is pretty good too!

I'm 46--shoe-in candidate for the MIB quote, "Hey, old guys!" I'm impressed by the 60-yr.-old, about 10 posts back. You go, dude! I wanna be like you when I grow up.
Uses for the Clie? It's the other half of my brain. I'm the archetype absent-minded professor. Except, of course, that I'm a pastor instead.
The basic PIM funtions are my bread and butter, with SplashMoney, Documents-to-Go, Olive Tree BibleReader and MP3 files thrown in, too.
I also just like to fiddle with it: Colorize, Jack Flash, etc.

I use an SJ33, and it's not annoying at all. My right middle finger can move the jog wheel and operate the <-HOLD POWER-> slider, my right thumb opens and closes the flip cover, and left hand is free to use my 3-in-1 stylus (see avatar).

I would not even think of watching PrOn on my NX70V while on campus. Too great a chance of someone walking behind me and seeing what I am looking at. I save that for in the privacy of my home!!
On side note, I am graduating in a month and I got an interview for the manager position of Farmer's Insurance!
I am so psyched and want a full-time job after graduation very much!!
Figure I will work in a job I am not crazy about for a few years and then look for something I love then when I have some good experience behind me!

Oh, yeah, and I'm a southpaw.
I seldom use jog dial, anyway. I grew up on a Palm, and the dial seems awfully slow on address book scrolls, etc.
Is the Clie frustrating? OS5 is, a bit. I miss LeftHack. But then, most of the world discriminates against southpaws. It's not ILLEGAL discrimination, but it's there, none-the-less.

I started out a long time ago with a Visor Deluxe, then after talking a long time about how color PDAs weren't necessary and cost too much I moved on to a Prism, then a T665, now a TG50, and ina few days my TH55 should be here. I have also always had a Stowaway for whatever device I've owned.
I use (& will use once the TH55 arrives) mine for MP3s, info (AvantGo - weather, sports scores, news, etc), a Bible, scheduler/planner, todo, address book, thought organizer (Bonsai), document/spreadsheet/presentation reader/composer, email, money management, picture viewer, taking pictures, database management (including assignments, grades, passwords, car maintenance schedule/gas milage, and more), a dictionary, remote control, class notes, voice recorder, occasional movie viewer, ballistics calculator, calculator, unit converter, various guitar/sound programs, a few games, a remote at times, web surfing, accessing my PC, and whatever else I can.
I first bought a PDA because I was considering a laptop, but the PDA was far chaper and smaller. I now use my Clie for everything I would use a laptop for, and then some probably.

Age 45. Primary work is in the financial services area (IRA's, Annuities, Life Ins, etc.)
Second Job/Hobby = Web Site management, develpment, hosting and related services.
PDA = clie'less
History:
When I was in college I was one of the primary users of the newly created computer lab in the engineering building. It consisted of about 12 networked PC stations with access to vintage versions of WordPerfect, Lotus, and 100's of other accessible programs. This system included 2 state-of-the-art shared Epson dot matrix printers (howwwww!!). The PDA/gadget of the day was the HP-C, a super progamable calculator.
Today:
Today I have 5 computers attached via a Netgear Wi-Fi system at home. Two are dedicated work laptops (mine and my wife's), then my primary desktop, a personal laptop, and my son's desktop (built from scratch).
Currently searching for the perfect Clie' to help organize and manage my contacts, schedules, and on the go notes. Also plan to integrate my Garmin GPS into use with my PDA. Here's where I'm at:
UX-50 - love the design and many features (camera, bluetooth, wi-fi), but worry about the processor, smaller LCD, and no way to hook up my Garmin GPS......lacks the standard port found on every other Clie'....also lacks enhanced IR)
TH-55 - like everything, size, new features (organizer, etc.) has wi-fi and port for my GPS, but, thought I would like a keyboard....and...enhanced IR is missing here as well.
NX80 - may be my best choice for now. Great camera, has keyboard, good processor, enhanced IR, etc. But, will have to get a wi-fi card. At $299 currently (CompUSA), may be best to get this and watch for the UX-50 replacement with a port and OS6.
Still Clie'less but working on it.

When palm released its 1st pda I bought one. Still have it actually. Kept that for several years then converted to Pocket PC until last week. I purchased an NZ90. Not sure how I feel about this device but I am going to be patience because I feel it has enormous potenial. Along w/this purchase I also bought a 4GB Hitachi Micro Drive. Which I have been having so trouble getting to work. Popped it into my e740 Pocket PC and worked like a champ. This is where the patience comes in. Also purchased a 512 MS Pro. My plan for these 2 add-ons is, MD used for MP3s and MS used for Movies and proggies. I figure if I can get a DVD down to 95MB at 208x320 to watch on my SEP900 I can get several or maybe 3 movies on this stick.
Other than that just a guy that likes his toys.:D

Started life in IT, like many people here, writting apps for something called a "Lisp Machine" (serious technology in '85, 4 MB RAM, 200 MB disk, IR mouse and bit mapped display!). Moved into Management Consultancy and have been enjoying this work for a long time.
As I am in the UK, I started with Psions and the Ericsson MC218 (aka Psion 5mx) and moved to the Ericsson R380 smartphone, a few Psion Revos, Rex6000, Clie NR70, SE P800 and now happy with both a SE P900 and Clie TH55. I found I need the large screen of the TH55 for heavy duty PIM. What next - well I'm not sure but I have finally worked out that I need a Time Management philosophy as well as the latest tech device!

Hello everyone,
This is a huge thread, so I have not looked through the entire thing.. but just browsing the first and last page, seems like we have a lot of students and business people here. Makes sense.
Anyways, here's me.
What am I?
I'm currently a highschool student.
What handheld do I use?
I currently use the lovely Sony Clie TG50 with a Wifi Memory Stick add-on.
What do I use my handheld for?
I use it for:
PIM (recording homework assignments, etc, other day-planner like things)
Taking notes in class (ocassionally)
MP3 playback (it's pretty much replaced my MiniDisc player)
Games when waiting for something
Checking email (pop account)
Checking FirstClass
Managing my computer (if it's on, via ssh, and in the future, vnc)
Browsing the internet while waiting for something
Recording funny moments on the voice recorder (my teacher sang us a song for physics.. so funny, I quickly pulled out my TG50 and hit the record button. Was able to later email him an MP3 of himself singing :) )
I've also tried recording lectures on the voice recorder, but found that I never used them. Listening to an 80 minute clip is not something I felt like doing when I was pressed for time for exams..
Watching movies/tv episodes on long bus trips
This is all I can think of for now. :)

I've lived in Moscow for about nine years. Bought an NX80 in my depression when I got divorced. It gathered dust for awhile because I have trouble even reading and comprehending the words "computer literate." Then I figured, wouldn't it be great if I could put Russian/English dictionaries on this thing instead of carting a library around? It just took off from there! Now I have a UX50, and I feel naked going anywhere without it. My favorite watering hole just put in free WiFi (there aren't yet a lot of that available here - yet), so that's a trip for me. I'm a reader, so I always have a 'stack' of books and references in my tiny little 'library' wherever I go. I love this forum, and even though I ask dumb questions a lot - and get rightfully ignored :) - I've sure learned a lot. And it's like being part of a community. I'm having a great time with my PDA, sure wish I had kids to play with it with... sigh!
